Yes. The team clearly needed the cap space. I loved watching Ware as a Cowboy, but the last 2 years have been injury after injury and he is on the wrong side of 30.

I am so sick of hearing that Ware's decline is in any way associated with his switch to 4-3. It was simply injuries folks. He would be successful in either system if healthy. With that being said, cap mismanagement is why he is gone. Jerry bit the bullet and decided to move on. I can honestly say I am not sure how I feel about it yet. Maybe it is an eye opener for JJ and his cap management will get better from here on out. Only time will tell.

He could have taken a pay cut & still made many millions & he chose not to do that. Some will & some won't. He wouldn't.

So now he's gone. I really don't care where he goes or who he plays for. I like him & all that but now he's just a number on another team.

This point is being lost on all the soul searching going on round here. HE WANTED TO LEAVE! We could not justify 12mil/yr to a vet when rebuilding the D; it really is that simple.

Until they string several years together of showing they have figured it out this means very little.

When they moved to the 4-3 the writing was on the wall on Ware's eventual release. He was undersized to play that position in today's NFL. It showed in his lack of productivity and his many injuries. I'm sure he'll have a couple or 3 more solid years if he ends up on a 3-4 team. Good luck to you Ware.

Charles Haley didn't seem to have a problem converting and excelling at DE.

I don't understand if this is what they wanted to do then why sign romo last year another aging vet who is almost done why not bite the bullet and take bad season and then draft young qb. also move on from witten. this tells me that Jason garret will not be fired

He was ineffective.

When he was out with injuries the team seemed to be a little more effective. It was weird.

Releasing Ware and Austin got us out if cap hell in one day. Yeah, I love Ware, but we are better off.

The jury is still out in my opinion. Releasing Ware is only one brick of the wall. Now the braintrust must follow up with solid, although not necessarily spectacular, free agent acquisitions before the draft. Their focus should bolster the defense primarily and minimize as many needs as possible headed into the draft. A solid draft is a necessity. And parting ways with Austin would be a final statement move. I would say the franchise has changed for the better only after they have made a number of positive moves to improve the roster without stumbling in the process.

this
our GM and collective brain trust (and i use that term loosely) has a LONG history of stupid moves that cannot be erased by one semi-intelligent move

wait and see

with or with out ware they are not going to win many games any way so its time to move on this is a 4 and 12 team. with there schedule they are not going to win many games they should of let romo go last year and also witten and drafted young qb this year

With the likely departures of Ware, Hatcher and Spencer, how can the team possibly rebuild the defensive line sufficiently in the year or two that Romo has left in the window where he can win a championship?

With Ware it is one of those situations that you don't want to face. A person who has been a lynch pin of your organization for so long and deep down you really don't want to let him go because from a non financial stand point it doesn't feel right. On the financial side if the player doesn't want to take a pay cut or work with you to loosen the financial burden then your options are few. Does it stink? sure. Did it have to be done? Yes.

The GM has shown loyalty to aging players for too long. I think what sucks is that 117 sacks from Ware were wasted by the GM for not putting enough around Ware and other players (we will visit this same situation with guys like Witten and Romo in 2 or or 3 years) to consistently compete for championships. Instead the GM surrounded him with draft choices and free agents that allowed Ware and others to only compete for barely making it into the playoffs or not at all. I feel like it's a wasted career with opportunities for rings wasted.

I said in another post prior to free agency that I would be fine with 4 fresh faces up front. Spencer and Hatcher can go too. I'd rather have a nice rotation of bodies of front who aren't high priced, have an ax to grind and can get after it. I trust in Marinelli. After last year, from a DLine standpoint, there is no where to go but up. I'm looking for guys who can stay healthy and that Marinelli can mold.

The organization's mismanagement is the reason why Ware is gone in the first place so no...no it isn't.

JMO but this couldn't be more off base. The OP was asking if the org was better with Ware's release not judging off past performance. Moving on from the bad contracts of Ware and Austin is a drastic change in philosophy and clearly marks a shift in thinking at VR. Both moves needed to be done and the fact they did shocks me a little. I'm thrilled with the moves and think the change is a good thing and something long overdue.

not that difficult IMO

they will sign melton and 1-2 more DL relatively cheap

go FS in round 1 or 2 and draft DL the other 3 of top 4 picks

there is also a chance that either hatch or ware come back for a lesser deal once FA sets the price

i think it is easier than many on the board are making it out to be, most people making out that "this is a 2-3 year rebuilding process" are just lining up the potential excuses for jerry and garrett's likely idiotic decisions (yet to come) this off season and for what they know will be another average season so next year they can say.... we always told you this was not a 1 year fix
