DMN: Will McClay builds reputation

With all that has been said, I now believe we will trade the 16th pick for more picks so Will can help get more players.

Whether his job title is "GM" or not isn't really that big of a deal to me. He basically does the job of a GM, at least it sounds that way. Jerry is just the figurehead GM. McClay still has to answer to Jerry, regardless of his job title; Jerry would still make the final calls even if McClay's job title was GM. As long as he is being compensated fairly, his job title shouldn't matter. His impact on the team does.

It's funny how so many in this fan base are supportive of the front office as currently constituted, and at the same time, so desperate for someone to come into the franchise and be able to do the GM's work.

I'd say it's more the case that fans who don't expect the front office to change dramatically are hopeful that it might change incrementally with the right pieces in place as Jerry slows down some.

I don't know that many of our fans at all are all that enthusiastic about the front office. A lot of people are just realistic about any prospects for how it actually might improve. Anybody holding out for a revolution is fooling themselves.

A GM builds the team from the ground floor. An assistant director of personnel does the grunt work to provide the GM the info he needs to make decisions.

If McClay is really that good it'd be nice if he was the GM. So he had decision making power, not only with draft picks but the staff underneath him. I don't know how any rational Cowboys fan could disagree with that.

That's only your definition of GM. You're too hung up on someone's job title and not the job description.

McClay's not performing a GM role. He's heading up scouting, essentially. That's a big job on its own. He doesn't need to add GM responsibilities, and, when he does, he'll do it elsewhere if Jerry's still around.

He's also in charge of acquiring veteran players.

McClay's duties:

1. Scouting and drafting college players. Top person in charge of making the draft board.

2. Scouting and signing veteran players.

3. Interfacing to the coaching staff to determine scheme fit for both veterans and draft picks.

4. Assessing current players on the roster. Includes "scouting" them in training camp and during the season.

What else does a GM do?

If those are truely his responsibilities, it sounds to me like Jerry just farmed out part of his GM duties to McClay but kept the GM title intact for himself. If this is true, and Jerry actually listens to him, this is good news. Even if I think the current hype is over the top, at least someone other than Jerry is in charge of personnel and can hopefully get Jerry to listen to him.

Dead on.

Let's hope this Will McClay is legit because Dallas needs a guy who can do a good job and turn things around from the great job that Jerry has been doing.

I'll surely be pulling for McClay to "ring the bell" by doing his part in the upcoming draft. I've been hoping and praying for ages now that something akin to a worthwhile change might occur within the ranks of our scouting staff. Let's just hope that this is the answer.

Aaaaand we're done here.

Yes, even if Jerry hired a GM, Jerry is still the owner and still his boss. I don't see much difference except that McClay does not have the title.
