I want to see less Murray

I don't see Murray avg 29 carries a game. I don't think Dallas will over work him but they will treat him for what he is and that is a featured back. I would say over the course of the season that avg will be closer to 22 carries than what he got this past game.

So there's no chance he hits 400? Nobody is saying run him 30 times per game. Just treat him like a full time back.
 
I agree with the OP, Murray wont last 16 games at this pace. Ryan Williams is the most likely guy to shoulder a work load, should Murray get hurt. I like Randle, I cant understand why Dunbar gets a free pass. They acted like he was Marshall Faulk in the preseason with the way they coddled him and basically guaranteed him a roster spot.
 
I'd like to see more of Dunbar to keep Murray healthy anyway.

I'm all for running it with Murray, he's playing lights out, but we do want to watch him and not get him hurt if at all possible.

I agree about Dunbar. I hated how they used him in the PRe-season. That guy needs to play.

I will say though I still like Dunbars ability and think he will make an impact if we actually try to get him in space.

There's nothing that says he won't still get hurt with fewer carries.

It wasn't a workload injury that took his ankle out so regardless if whether or not he has had injuries that could possibly be avoided by a reduced workload, he could get injured on any carry.

He's the best back the team has. They can't afford to get less from Randal or Dunbar because they're scared of an injury.

True a RB can get his ankle rolled up on at any time. Again I don't envision him getting 29 a game but nice to know he can handle the load when we need it.
 
I think with only two games in the books it's a little premature to be worrying about the workload of a feature back. Check back in a couple of weeks on this one.

If you take all of the touches that a FB will get over the course of the season (runs and receptions). And then you ask, does that production (or the threat of it) outweigh the superior blocking skills of a big TE or an athletic OL or DL running the same plays (assuming that they won't get those touches or represent that threat)? I think the very few times the FB is going to see the ball means that you are better off cutting the FB, activating Williams at HB, and getting Murray some rest along the way. In other words if you are keeping a FB around for short yardage situations, there are other ways to put a blocking scheme together (including TE's, and OL or DL linemen) that wouldn't require the FB roster spot.
 
I think the number of carries will drop for Murray as soon as Romo shows he has returned to form. I fear what we have seen the last two weeks is only because Tony is not throwing well.

Also the Titans run defense is weak in the middle so it was in the game plan to exploit it which is exactly what they did.

As for Williams, I thought he is injury prone as well? What is the likelihood they are saving him for later in the season because if and when Murray goes down they have Ryan with fresh legs.

Agreed. If we truly are dedicated to running the ball as we did against the Titans, we can not give Murray that much workload. I don't know what the best run count is for him but it isn't 29. Probably a lot closer to 20. Divide the rest between Randle and Williams. And someone ask our GM what we need a FB for.

I don't know but if we are going to be a heavy running team we need Williams activated.

He'll run just as hard as Murray and he'll run to daylight.

If our goal is to impose our will on teams then Ryan Williams should be apart of that because he's a hungry player with talent.

They have to cut somebody when Scandrick comes back. I had the FB in mind for that move. It will be hard to have 4 RBs and a 3rd QB on the roster.

Yes, Randle looked good with the carries that he got. He probably would have had more if he had stayed in the game. Dunbar was not as consistent, but did gash them a few times.
 
Has anyone watched williams throughout his nfl career? He may look good if he ends up playing at some point because of this line, but he isnt in the same league as murray.

Williams is a good fit only if Murray is hurt. Randle ran well Sunday and plays a big role on ST.

I agree. I just wonder how much are they really committed to the run game. We have seen it in the past where fans and people in the media complain about the lack of a run game and Garrett and Tony dial back the number of pass plays. I think that is what happened with the Titans game when you factor in all the variables. Tony's bad back, not throwing well, laboring to move around the pocket, Titans weak run defense, and the OL becoming maulers with a fresh Murray in a contract year.

Because Dunbar is a totally different back. He's a change of pace guy who is really good in open space.
