Recently bought blu-rays of CHeston's Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments was recently restored in 2010, the color is amazing.

Though I don't give 10/10 for movies (rarely), I give both 9/10.

Whiplash
8.5/10
29 year old Director Damien Chazelle shows great promise in crafting this intense teacher/protege story.
Great performances by J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller. The editing, sound, actors and photography moves at various paces, delivering a well orchestrated film.
Must see.....

Wild
6.5/10
Reese Witherspoon stars in this biographical film based on memoirs of Cheryl Strayed, a women who hiked the Pacific Coast Trail alone to find freedom from a turbulent life. Two parallel stories are told during the film, Cheryl's past, and her present hike. The devices used to move into the flashbacks were clever, but ultimately the film has a hard time balancing the two. Still worth a watch, although "Tracks", and "Into the Wild" did a much better job of presenting similar journeys to the screen.

Hello Ladies: The Movie
7/10
HBO decided to allow Stewart to end his journey with us in a 90 minute movie.
I thought this show was super funny, but its definitely an acquired taste. The movie will appeal to anyone who enjoyed the show.

Blood Simple
7.5/10
Early Cohen Brothers Noir. The Talent was obvious way back than, at the time Barry Sonnefeld was a cinematographer (now a director), collaborating with the Cohen Brothers on their three early films, "Blood Simple", "Miller's Crossing", & "Raising Arizona". The three set the ground work for what has become some of the most clever film work in hollywood. Although I don't know if you can call the Cohen Brothers "Hollywood".

Hellbenders.

Low budget and will NOT appeal to a number of people but I have to say I liked it just because it was a little different,

First, Prometheus. Now Exodus: Gods and Kings.

How can someone who directed Alien... Blade Runner... Thelma and Louise... GLADIATOR...

...release whatever the heck that was?

Note to Mr. Scott: Do not make biblical movies with an underlying contemporary theme.

Cecil B. Demille is turning in his grave.

Oh well. At least the special effects did not disappoint. And the final plague scene was superb.

2nd note to Mr. Scott: Do not cast Sigourney Weaver if you are only going to have her do a handful of dialogue.

sigh

Exodus wasn't even worth 6 bucks on demand.

I haven't see it yet... but I said this in another thread ..... Ridley Scott hasn't made a "Ridley Scott Film" since Black Hawk Down.
Sad...

I watched Dredd (2012) on Netflix a few nights ago.

It was dumb but kind of fun I guess.

6/10

Exodus - 5/10. Not a moment in this film that is compelling. Just blah.
Laggies - 3/10. Completely lifeless for most of it's length. Sam Rockwell adds a little bit of energy, but it's too little, and too late. It's a pretty silly premise to start with, but for a supposed comedy, it had no laughs. Glad it was free.

How To Train Your Dragon 2

7/10

Solid family moving, again really cool visuals and a strong understanding of using 3D. I wish I had seen this one in the theaters as the visual appeal is at least worth a point or two. Strong story with some concepts being above small child age, which makes it enjoyable for an adult. Avoided some cliches that it could have EASILY fallen into but didn't. The third act felt slightly rushed to be, I feel like they really wanted this to be an epic story but remembered that it is still a family movie and needs not to be too long, but you can tell that there was at least a writer or two that wanted to make this a much longer story. Would have been interesting, but I understand why not. The villain wasn't completely two dimensional, but you just couldn't feel the same conflict with characters that matter this time around. This lead to a bit of a disappointment compared to the first one, of which I was a HUGE fan.

I'd kind of like to see a third installment, but I don't know if they would be able to exceed the second, and if not, really not worth it.

Dawn of the planet of the Apes.
8/10
I thought they did a good job of showing the good & evil in both humans and apes. Caesar is awesome as a patriarch, leader and diplomat. The 8 is because it was a bit long, but it was necessary IMO.

Hobbit: Battle of 5 armies
7/10
Good movie if you are a fan of the series
Could have been better

Hobbit 3: 5/10 - Easily the worst of the Hobbit or LOTR movies. I was bored for the most part. So much unnecessary fluff thrown in (Desolation of Smaug suffered this quite a bit too IMO). Several characters should have been completely eliminated. It really felt like a cash in that was just tacked on at the end (I know the main parts are from the book).
