Collins working at Right Guard

Collins lined up at RT in rookie OTA

He hasn't since...

Yet, he is still our future RT to posters

Carry on... Cause Obviously it ain't gettin through

you think the NFL is the place to try that experiment...his skill set is at guard, that's where he projects in the NFL, not tackle especially right tackle where he's never played...Just like with Martin, played left tackle in college but his skill set is projected as a guard in the NFL where he's an all pro....

He played LT in the SEC. The only person that gave him problems was Flowers and he sure didnt beat him with athleticism. He was one of the top OT in the country last season. He can play RT.

This entire issue seems moot though. I'm beginning to get the impression they would move Martin over first. Smith Leary Fred Collins Martin

Agreed.

If Darrion Weems fails to secure the swing tackle job and Doug Free goes down long term, Jerry Jones mentioned yesterday moving a current starter out to RT and that La'el Collins was also an obvious option.

Jason Garrett has made it clear during press conferences the staff views Collins as a guard in the NFL.

That's where they want him.

I believe he and Martin can play RT if needed, but their best fit is inside.

A lot of shuffling on the interior. Martin was at center, Bernardeau was at left guard, and Collins was at right guard.

It seems they're working on line flexibility in case of injury.

Just my own speculation, but with Tyron's bicep issue keeping him out for a while, I'm wondering if we'll see Collins get any work at left tackle? My thinking is that Weems might do a better job at right tackle and I would be interested to see what Collins could do out there with the 1's.

I believe they think Weems has better feet. Pretty sure he has longer arms. That doesn't make him a LT in reality though.

I do think they are working on versatility but there has got to be some genuine competition, too. You put players in different places and see where they play better. You play different combinations. You put the best combination of players out there hopefully at there best position.

They have to be trying to figure out how to get Collins some playing time. And I've been saying we are short at center. Seems they are working hard at a backup; thank goodness.

Going to be a great year for the OL. Probably more than one great year.

I would love to see at least Martin if not Collins get some work at RT. I don't think anyone would bet money Free makes it 16 games and Collins should be the next guy off the bench. Both Collins and Martin were considered potential RT prospects coming out of the draft so one of them should be prepared to fill in when Free goes down....not Weems. Nobody can make an argument Weems is a better RT prospect than Martin or Collins.

I want the interior to have the beef. Romo struggled when pressure came up the middle not the outside

Collins just needs to ready to play guard or tackle, he is too good to sit on the bench, he is a starter.

No doubt. I just have this idea that the team sees Collins as 'left handed' at this stage in terms of his technique. All of his experience comes on that side and it may be asking too much of the rookie to completely reverse his technique.

Seems was getting pretty good reports at right tackle during OTA's and minicamp, so I was thinking that it would be interesting to see Collins at left tackle and Weems back on the right until Smith returns.

Does the team see Green as the long term at RT?

I finally saw a mention of Green in a question asked of Mickey Spagnola. He speculated that it was looking like Green was headed towards starting the season on PUP.

I don't disagree, the point of my post was to have Martin or Collins ready when Free went down. An OL of Smith/Leary/Fred/Collins/Martin is better than an OL consisting of Smith/Leary/Fred/Martin/Weems.

I don't agree with this. I think he needs to work on his flexibility and core strength but I think he has the quickness and size/length to be an excellent RT.

Most scouting reports I read felt like Collins was a better guard prospect than tackle
Just like Martin last year, both can play tackle but at least most people felt both are better guards
The question is do you play a guy at a position he can be solid at, or dominate at
At times last game Collins really dominated and I think that's where they want to keep him
If Weems can't step up he very well could be pushed outside but I think they see that as a last resort type situation

EVERY QB struggles against pressure up the middle. That is why it is called a pocket. With the deep end closest to the middle of the line.

I don't see the Cowboys being in any rush to move Collins out at RT. As he continues to develop maybe he does move out to tackle but I see that as something down the road if at all.

I think it more likely Weems plays the swing T and Collins starts off as a backup G. But there are always people getting knicked up so I'd expect him to come off the bench first.

Oh ya I totally agree. I actually want Collins at RT. A line of Smith, Leary, Fred, Martin, Collins looks to be the best 5

Some QBs are better at getting away from pressure in the middle others better getting away from the outside

Most scouting reports I read said that he was all SEC at LT but could play anywhere on the line. The mode of thought with Martin was he has short arms. Collins doesn't have that problem. He has the size and feet to do it. We should look to what the team has done in the past outside of Martin. Smith was brought in and played RT. Flozell started off at OG and wasn't the prospect Collins is.

I also do not like that second 'question.' OG is always in line. It's easier to dominate when you have help both ways. OTOH, it's hard as hell to find quality OT and the RT is closed by the TE most plays. Free has ranged from marginal to good in his up and down career that is on the downslope with recurring injuries. Weems lacks coordination. Maybe experience helps that maybe it doesn't. OTOH, we have Leary, Martin, Fred, and Bern inside.

The question isn't just OG or RT for Collins. It's also the various opportunity costs. The cliche to distill the issue is 'who are the best 5 linemen.' Collins is better or close to Free and Weems now. He will get better and eclipse them both. If Martin is a better RT this year then fine but Free and Weems should not move Collins to the pine.

Ronald Leary is another guy who has sat out a few practices, his issue is a sore back. The Cowboys want to get a better look so he's going to get an MRI done. Again, the Cowboys don't think his injury is serious but they want to get a better idea of what it is, how long he might miss and how to best treat it.

Leary needs to be able to practice to hold off the hard-charging La'el Collins who is gunning for his starting spot at guard. Collins had an impressive debut against the Chargers and will likely get the starting nod against the 49ers unless Leary can recover very quickly.

Beware the Ides of March.

This team is getting some really good youth. From the reports about Collins having to come in for a vet like Leary, that is good news.

And if Collins beats out Leary, that is some depth! Let the old dog rest and let the pup learn.
