I would argue, yeah, Brady has been blessed being a part of a great offensive system most of his career.

And I just told you why he started for a team and got tot he playoffs. The Chiefs that year had a dominant rushing attack that took a lot of the heat off of Cassel, that was 5 seasons ago.

And again, no I don't think we will find a QB on the level of franchise QBs in this league, obviously. I want a capable backup that can actually keep us in games with limited mistakes. That's not Cassel, unless you think our rushing attack will become dominant again. This crap should have been sorted out in the offseason so we weren't scrambling to snatch up QBs like him.

Can't do anything about that now. Have to go and get who we can. He's the best of the rest.

From the AP story --

"Cassel said he turned down offers to sign with other teams to stay in Buffalo because he was familiar with the Bills’ system and because he didn’t want to relocate his wife, who was eight months pregnant."

So maybe we did make him an offer back then.

(And sorry, Matt, but your wife will have to relocate now.)

I get the wife being 8 months pregnant, but after that who would want to stay in Buffalo in the winter?

Welcome to Dallas Cassel family.

What bothers me more is that this was the plan. Weeden was the backup. They did not draft anyone. They even brought Vaughan back.

It is almost that they actually did not think for a second an aging QB with a bad back would ever get hurt and then when he does, they do not trust their own decisions.

Honestly this is probably more about worrying about this organization's ability to evaluate the position and be confident in our system to develop players.

We are going to be in serious trouble when Romo hangs it up.

I do agree with that. They need to look toward the future while they're trying to win now.

They need to do the Green Bay thing and draft a Romo clone and let him sit behind Tony for a few years and do a daily Vulcan mind meld with Tony and suck out Tony's knowledge.

Flynn couldn't stick with the Patriots as a number three and was also cut by the Jets. I'm not calling Cassel our savior, but he is probably a better option than Flynn in this offense. Dallas worked out Flynn and passed. That says something.

Flynn was probably the second best out there but he's really only been successful in GB's offense.

I think they thought they may have had something in Vaughn and then it did not progress as they hoped.

As Romo gets older, the higher and higher the draft pick gets they need to consider spending to bring in the next guy.

What about this trade says they don't trust their own decisions? They needed another back up for the next 8 weeks. So they went and got one.

They went in to the season with a third string QB they were still considering as a possible developmental player. When he went backwards instead of progressing. They cut him.
As far as drafting one. Who could they have gotten? Petty was the only decent one available. But he would have had to be taken in the third. Obviously he wasn't rated that high on their board.Hundley could have been had in the 4th. But Wilson was the better pick up there.
If they're going to get a replacement for Romo. It's probably going to take a first or second rounder to do so.
Personally. I'm glad we addressed the defense in this years first and second. It's going to pay dividends going forward. Hopefully. A decent QB is there when we pick in the early rounds next year.
But yeah. We're probably going to be in trouble when Romo retires. That is what happens to the majority of teams when they lose their long time starter. Sans Green Bay and Indy.

Looks like a 2017 5th round pick for their 7th rounder. Hmmmm...I'd rather have the pick...

Meh. It's just insurance, and they're hedhing risk.

They think the NFC East is soft and a playoff shot is obtainable even with the injuries. They think when we get everyone back we're going to make a serious run, but we cant get dig a hole too deep before we get there.

Cassell provides competition and in case Weeden pulls a statue and gets decapitated at some point.

So would I. This accomplishes nothing. You currently have complete crap starting at QB. If he goes down, you'll have complete crap replacing him, with or without the trade for Cassel.

We have to win games for the next 8 weeks with awful QB play.

I was being sarcastic. But still in reality, neither can play, but what can you do? We made our beds in the offseason.

What I do is give the scouts, coaches and players the benefit of the fricking doubt. Geez. I can't believe the way people squawk before the games are even played. In the preseason it was, "Oh my gosh! It's Sam Bradford and Chip Kelly! Run!" After week one it was, "Oh my gosh! There is no hope for us in Philly!" After the game Sunday it was, "Oh my gosh! Brandon Weeden???" And now it's, "Oh my gosh! Can you believe these idiots swapped sixth rounders for that guy???"

Lighten up, folks. Have a little faith. There is nothing quite as unpredictable as a season in the NFL.

Go COWBOYS!
