A smart GM would be trading Romo

I have been Romo's biggest fan, but this would be the time to trade him. Get a few top draft picks for him and help in the rebuild. Some team would jump at having the opportunity with Romo for the next couple of years. Then we could actually draft with an open mind without the misconception that there is some small window and get the short term thinkers thinking long term like they should be. Jerry Jones being one of those short term thinkers.

And a bad GM might trade for Romo. We're not talking Peyton Manning here. I wouldn't put much trade value on Romo.....

Denver would trade for him no problem and they would win another two titles. I would take their first and 2nd round pick and trade up and get Lynch.

Take a look at that dead cap amount and then tell me how a "smart GM" would handle that?

I think that's the part of the equation you failed to consider.

Nobody is giving that much for Romo. He's 37 and injury prone.

"Rebuilding" is an idiotic concept in sports, but especially in the NFL which has been a year-to-year league for some time now. Please stop embarrassing yourself.

Ah, you are probably right. So it would be suicide cap wiser?

Pretty much. At face value, your Denver trade scenario makes some sense, until you look at salaries and cap numbers.

Then? Kaboom!

How exactly do you plan to deal with 32M in dead money?

Interesting!! So at lease we know why Jones keeps saying that Romo is here at least a few more years. In 2018 the dead cap money comes down to 9k where it would be the first year we might stomach taking the hit.

Yep. That's the year you're looking at either a renegotiation and lowering of salary, or a release and turning the reigns over to someone else. I don't see this team reworking Romo's deal to put themselves in this kind of position again.

So two more years at least of Romo, good to know.
