Things have been pretty rough in Houston for former first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney. He has spent most of his time on the sidelines for the Texans who selected him first overall out of South Carolina in 2014. He was supposed to be a huge factor next to defensive end J.J. Watt, but instead has been quietly rehabbing for the most part.

On the field he hasn’t made much noise either. He has less than 50 tackles and five sacks in his first two seasons. Sure injuries have played a part, but perhaps scheme is to blame as well.

According to Christopher Smith of Saturday Down South, Clowney has always preferred a 4-3 defensive system. The Texans currently run a 3-4 system, which forces the natural defensive end to move outside to linebacker. Smith claims the talented pass rusher even avoided going to Alabama due to the team running such a defense.

In addition, Clowney said he would’ve committed to Alabama “a long time ago” if the team ran a base 4-3 defense instead of a 3-4. (Ironically, the 266-pound Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 draft, now plays outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.)

So maybe Clowney could finally reach his potential if he was placed back in a system that allows him to line up at defensive end. Which brings us to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys are about as pass rush needy as any team has ever been. Last season’s second round pick at defensive end, Randy Gregory, is currently suspended and in rehab. Their sack leader from last season, defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, is also suspended to start the season.

Outside of those two, the team has an inexperienced group of players like Benson Mayowa, Charles Tapper, Ryan Russell and converted defensive tackle David Irving.

Due to this lack of experience, Dallas should call the Texans and ask about the availability of the former first overall pick, who would immediately become the best pass rusher on America’s Team.

The Texans would probably want a lot more than most would be willing to pay for someone with his injury history.

For the right price, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I mean I likely wouldn't throw a second rounder at the Texans for him but I might consider a Leary for Clowney trade.

I'd do Leary and a 4th..

The dude is injury prone but the talent is still there and a move to Dallas would be good for him.

Some team would probably fork up a higher pick than we would be willing to offer for him.

I'd like to get him on this roster though. Huge upside.

Call me crazy but I would trade next years 1st and Leary for Clowney in a heartbeat

He is probably the most physically gifted young pass rusher in the league and is in the completely wrong scheme

Call me crazy but I would trade next years 1st and Leary for Clowney in a heartbeat

And if romo breaks down and we win 4 games again ...you just paid Leary and a top 5 pick for a guy who can't play

If I thought he couldnt play I wouldnt be trading for him. If Romo breaks down and the pick ends up being a top 5 pick it could still be worth it if Clowney becomes a star...

All big time trades involve high risk.. If you want trades with no risks then trades for guys like Brice Butler and Ceasar Rayford will be what you get.

This is some Jerry Jones logic.

Just because Jaylon Smith is there in the 2nd round doesn't mean you have to pick him.

I'd love Clowney but i'd want to get a deal done that doesn't crush our draft.

I think he has been such a huge disappointment so far that his price tag could possibly be reasonable. If not then so be it.

Texans would LOL and hang up.

I can't see the price tag being super high. The Texans would probably be better off keeping him than trading him because I doubt they would get good value for him.

So far.. He has been their Mo Claiborne.

Also.. His replacement, Whitney Mercillus, is already there.

1 more thing.. He had microfracture surgery.
