I would bet anything Jerry is not going to hold him hostage as a backup against Tony's will.

If you think that, you should look at Jerry's moves in the past. 14 million savings if he is a June 1st cut, that is probably going to happen unless someone offers us a deal we can't refuse.

All Romo would have to do is retire if we hold him against his will and we eat it regardless.

We will just get a bunch of nonsense about how we "could" open up 50M, when we all know we won't and shouldn't.

Romo isn't going to sit behind Prescott... He just won't and I doubt the Cowboys would force that on him.

He either starts in Dallas or he's on another team.

Romo will not remain in Dallas as a back up in 2017.

It costs $50K more to release Crawford than to keep him in 2017.

In other words T. Crawford is not going anywhere.

In 2018 the team gains $1.8M by releasing Crawford.

I could see us pulling triggers on Fred and Smith to free up room but that's about it. Definitely Fred, maybe you hesitate on Smith with his back problems this season.

Romo a June 1st cut puts you in a much better cap position where you can be aggressive in free agency if you would like but you are also looking at making Martin the top paid guard in the league before the season if that's what he wants.
 
I do understand wanting to keep Romo but the fact is, he is not going to want to stay as a backup. Not in his nature to do that sort of thing. Now I believe it will come down to simple economics between Jerry and Tony, i.e. if there is a team Tony is willing to go to and the trade is worthwhile to Dallas then he will be traded and we get a $5mm break on the cap this year. If not then I believe Jerry will release Tony effective June 1st in where we get a $14mm cap saving although a $10 mm hit next year.

Remember we need to extend Martin's contract as he is in the option year but it can wait until after June 1st. We will restructure probably several contracts such as Dez, Smith, and Frederick. We have 23 free agents and probably resign up to 10 of them, maybe more. We will not be big players in free agency but could see 3 or 4 signed 2nd or most likely 3rd/4th weeks of FA. I expect Crawford to be restructured and Witten possibly to take a salary cut slightly. It would not surprise me to see Free traded to wherever Tony goes. Also could see Morris traded or released especially if we resign McFadden. Probably cut Wilbur and a few others on the lower tier.

I would expect us to be between $15mm and $20mm under the cap at some point possibly more. Best guess though Tony is traded before the draft or during the draft and we gain an extra $5mm this year for the cap then next year we should be in great cap space.

We really don't know the cap number yet just that it SHOULD BE between $165mm and $170mm so right now we are just averaging.

If Tony released or traded after June 1st, you cannot use that money until after June 1st, them the rules.

If we cut him outright, he costs 10.4 million against this year's cap which is $50k more than he currently is on the books for. But it would save $9.1, 10.1 and 9.1 over 2018, 19 and 20.

If he is a June 1st cut, we save $7.25m in 2017, 1.8m in 2018 and the 10.1 and 9.1 in '19 and '20. There is no reason he can't be a cap casualty.

Post June 1 cut. Over the Cap has 7 mill savings this year, not sure how exact that is but given his dead money would be like 10 mill, it'd be at least 5.

And yeah, they won't do it, and you shove the difference into next year but i'd be thinking about it. I'm hoping he's just continued to have shoulder issues, because his cap of 10 mill and 7+ salary for the production is the definition of a mistake. And I liked him.

And this matters?

We will still have flexibility if we want to sign some players and we can use the shine 1st savings for a player like Martin and for our rookies.

That just seems like the most logical route if we can't find a trading partner.

The one reason would be that they have to pay money to replace him.

And even though there are lots of negative waves here about the guy... He played decently (not great, but decent) and had 4.5 sacks. He's not a 4-3 DE in my opinion, but as a DT getting 500 snaps? I think he's useful.

Regardless I don't see the Cowboys cutting him.

As I posted elsewhere I don't see him as a 4-3 DE... But as a DT getting 500 snaps? Yeah, I think he's a productive member of a rotation.

Maybe. If I just wanted a productive member of a rotation, I'd re-sign McClain for half of Crawford's salary and use the extra 3.5 mill to help sign a vet CB or WR.
