Brandon George talked about the foot movement catching up with his nerve starting to fire back in January. That is when it started.

Albert Breer said "foot activation" in March.

Yes, they have been talking about his ability to move his foot.
Thanks, Fuzzy!

Bob Diaco played a very passive 3-4 defense that didn't blitz a lot, played a lot of deep zone and they played Smith a lot off the LOS. So the idea that he didn't use Smith as best he could isn't exactly a stretch.

I think he did use him correctly - off the LOS and in space.

Where Smith brings value is in the ability in coverage to cover backs, TEs and some WRs. Having him and Sean Lee on the field at the same time will be a terrific tandem in coverage. As a blitzer, yes, he did get home from time to time. But, I don't see him making a living as a rusher in the NFL - it's as a 3 down linebacker in space.

Saw where you updated the quote afterward. No need to equivocate how long Diaco coached Smith - I think he was used properly in 2013.

Under BVG, VanGorder did a horrible job running the defense, period. Any defense that had Isaac Rochell and Sheldon Day dropping at times into coverage is insane.

Jaylon has said he was improving and getting sensation back, some want to ignore it fine. Now this recent report that would indicate things have continued to improve. All I can say is it sounds very promising for him. Kid has been doing all he can do to get himself ready to play and I am excited to see him out on the field.

Based on having seen him play extensively in college.

For one, I am not suggesting he should be a DE or anything like that. All I am saying if used as a blitzer in a scheme that was uber aggressive at attacking the QB with LBs, or a 3-4 OLB, I believe he'd be very effective. We probably won't use him like that since we don't use our LBs like that but let's say that during the year our defense is still struggling to get to the QB and Marinelli decides to bring more heat with his LBs............. I think Smith, if healthy, could be excellent at getting after the QB.
I think there are some misunderstandings about Jaylon as a rusher in this thread.

I think the point was brought up when someone referred him as our (cringe) " war daddy". He isnt that. He isnt that consistent pass rusher we are looking for in our defense. He serves a whole nother purpose for us. The elusive Leo? Perhaps, but I feel his value to us is much much more in his coverage range then as a hand in dirt rusher. As a blitzer, absolutely. May be even more effective at that considering how infrequent we do it. All it takes is one big play on a blitz to get opponents thinking about it.

However. In a different defense its a different story. A Rex Ryan type scheme? He is a guy you would see going after the QB frequently and effectively. A 3-4? Jaylon probably allows you to run more 3-3-5's effectively due to his ability as a blitzer.

Thats what made Jaylon a top 5 prospect. There are very few if any schemes he wont be able do what you ask him.

Could he put his hand in the dirt and rush? Probably. But in our scheme I dont see why you would want him to

You seem to think that there were not those here that would rather Jaylon not recover then they be shown to be wrong. THAT is what I meant saying optimistic about humanity. I have no doubt there are several posters here who had nightmares about Tony taking us to the SB and winning the MVP award. They truly would rather the boys lose then Romo get credit. And if there are those like that then it stands to reason there are those like I described as regards Jaylon.

I think it's is just an easy narrative to assign to poeple who disagree with a stance. Just because people don't like Romo, doesn't mean they'd rather lose than see him win. I'm sure there are a couple people like that, and I hope they get some help. But not enough to support the frequency of the accusation.

I think you are missing my point. There is no doubt that he can chase TEs, RBs, etc. My point is that he can pretty much do it all at LB if healthy - he can be a very good pass rusher if blitzed, he can play in space, etc.

It's why he was thought of as a Top 5 pick before getting hurt.

He's over 240 lbs now. Weight won't be a problem for him.

It's not just weight. Even assuming those reports are accurate, and hold when he start playing, that doesn't mean he can hold up on the edge. There are guys bigger than him who can't. I just don't see any reason we'd want to line this guy up at DE. He's a great off-ball LB with no experience playing DE in games.

Ill say this. I can picture a draft with McDowell at 28 amd Tabor at 60. Having young leadership on the defense would definitely come in handy

I don't think anybody is recommending using him as a 3 down RDE, that would absolutely be a waste of his talent. I think the suggestion is that he HAS the ability to rush the passer from a 3 point stance not that he SHOULD. It's just another point to his versatility.

Well I agree I would rather see him at nickel LB than a hand in the dirt on 3rd down.

Hopefully we figure it out in camp. But I will say, if healthy, he can play ball wherever that might be.
