It's neither intelligence or wisdom.
It's much more complex. Unfortunately many people can't empathize with others and need to find explanations that fit into boxes that already exist in their minds.
Its how we can drive past homeless people who most likely have mental disorders and numb ourselves to the reality of their situations. Or how we can ignore that 60% of people in prison have serious mental disorders.

would like a source for that 60% figure.

You are under the mistaken impression the NFL gives a rat's azz about the players. It's $$$ and public relations, which is just another form of $$$.

The public relations fallout that would result from this kid harming himself would be 10000x worse

CTE has painted a black eye on the league, Junior Seau was a prime example. The league is way behind on their policies for handling the mental health of their players.

Yes yes yes. And I think 60 is a low estimate.

Sad to throw away a promising career to smoke some devils lettuce....

Devils lettuce? :muttley:

It's a joke that it's even banned, but as long as it is players need to be smarter. Looks like Gregory has chosen to end his career prematurely.

What's it going to be then, eh?

The NFL's handing of this situation looks really really really bad.

It was obvious to everyone that this was a mental health issue... what he needed more than anything was more interaction with his team, and a positive, structured environment... not banishment from the league.

I just pray nothing truly serious happens to Randy, that blood will be on Goodell's hands.
I disagree. The NFL should not be responsible to ensure that a player gets treatment. It should come down to the team honestly.

The whole thing is stupid.

Suspending Gregory or any player in the first place for weed is dumb.

Keeping him away from the structure of the team is dumb.

Promoting opioids instead is very dumb.

You could argue Gregory is also dumb for not being able to stay away, but we don't know the extent of his medical condition and he has maintained this is why he uses.

The whole thing is sad and stupid and totally avoidable.

interesting. BUT when I got to the actual study I noticed that as usual the journalist exaggerated some things. Mainly on what is considered a SERIOUS mental illness from minor mental illness. The SERIOUS percentage was a lot lower but even digging into the study it was hard to figure out. Probably about half that number. And since some fairly questionable 'problems' are included like problems with eating that are nowhere near either binging or purging or anorexia the conclusions of that study are a little off I think. There is a serious problem with the truly mentally ill in prisons but it is not anywhere near as big as 60%

I'm commenting more on their policy to banish players like this from team facilities, it does more damage than good.

It's reported Gregory may have bipolar disorder... leaving the healthcare in the hands of a sick individual is a horrible policy.

well it's not physically addicting like heroin or nicotine but it's habitually addicting...add to the fact that he has bipolar issues and weed seems to be the thing that helps him the most, it was very unlikely he was ever going to quit.
It's psychologicaly addicting.

We can pick apart the study ( there are various studies done)... but shouldn't the focus be on why people are being punished instead of treated? You can't punish mental illness out of someone. Just like you can't punish Randy Gregory into getting better....the league is being ran with the same mindset we use to run our prisons. Punishment over treatment.

No sympathy for stupid people.. it's not like weed is addicting...or is it? Maybe it's just certain people have that flaw where they become addicted to something. I've neve had that problem.

Unfortunately weed is addictive to some people. I knew people who smoke when they was young and still do. They could never give it up. It was costing them jobs and legal issues. That is why I didn't want the Cowboys to draft him.
