Article: Have Smart Phones Destroyed a Generation?

when I was a kid summer time always spent in the farm. totally different life style from the city.yes it was work but a lot of fun too.we learned a lot at a young age not only in the farm itself but also about life in general.

I agree with this. Basically two major issues with modern connectivity. One, you do isolate yourself and that translates into adopting ideas that your opinion is central. You don't get exposed to other ideas. You become closed to other opinions and less tolerant of other opinions and ideas.

The other issue you see a lot of is that isolationism is just that. It's much easier to cut a person from the herd, so to speak, and take advantage of the situation. You see this with young people in various types of bullying etc.

Bottom line, you do not fully develop your social or mental abilities.

The challenge with this image is that those folks will be reading the newspaper for a short duration... 10 minutes... 15 minutes... Whatever.

For many their smart phone is always with them and whenever there is a break in the action... There they go to it! And sometimes when there isn't a break in the action. After 10 seconds of not doing something a kid will whip out their smart phone and start Facebooking-instagramming-snapchatting. There total attention is with the phone.

Referring back to the image, I don't think I remember a time ever being in a restaurant and seeing a table of more than two people with one of them whipping out a newspaper/magazine and reading it while their partner/friend/relative sits there. But today? I see entire tables of 4, 6, 8 people ALL whipping out their smart phones... Totally ignoring everyone else.

We're isolating ourselves... No wonder loneliness and unhappiness is at such high levels.

Is it really?

Technology(internet/dating sites/forums etc) = more people are meeting other people than ever before. Easier to not be alone or lonely.

Not being confrontational. "Things" are just the opposite of what you are saying.

It's always funny how quickly the previous generation is willing to claim the next generation is ruined, like they don't remember their elders saying that about their generation.

Just like all those people that grew up with their parents telling them their music was just noise, only to turn around and tell their kids the same thing.

They aren't "meeting" anyone.

Remember when back when I first tried Facebook...

I was explaining to my wife how the whole "Friends" thing worked.

She said, "OK, so you become "friends" with a person you've never met, you've never talked to in person and you've not had any in depth conversations with?"

I said, "Yep".

She said, "You're ******** me."

I think for many words on a screen is about as hollow a human interaction as you can have.

Hmmm.
There's a difference between Facebook friends and actual buddies.
Here's a test:
Which will be there to help your move your sleeper sofa down 3 flights of stairs?
When I'm in the hospital, thanks for the FB emoji, but somebody better bring me actual cookies.

There is an old way of thinking. No change.

There is the current / future way of thinking. Change.

Have and have nots etc.

Besides I didn't mention Facebook friends.
I specifically mentioned certain ones.

Dating and marriages have increased exponentially since late 90's.
In effect = less lonely people. Less unhappy people.

Just the facts!

Again... never mentioned Facebook. That's something else entirely. That's the hive mind if you will. Heh heh

Then the facts would also show that the current generation is more unhappy than any other prior generation.

On top of that the teenage suicide rate is sky high!

Hmmmmm.... so this is the new add on to your original post.
I guess if you want to connect anything to anything you can.

Not trying to change anyone's mind about anything.

Fact remains.

We were better off in 1950 than 1900...
We were better off in 2000 than in 1951...

Just throwing out ga numbers in years... no agenda.

Ask the brilliant minds that have advanced this works with their contributions if we are worse off due to technology.

Informations sharing alone has led to many "advances" in health and medicine alone. The list goes on... but I'll leave it for anyone who wants to truly research it with an open mind to see what was... and now... what is.

Big difference between technology as a whole and one technology.

You are correct. This is all about Data Mining.

I'm drawing a blank on the name of the product, but about 10 years ago one of the big companies created some service that wasn't very popular. You just entered some information and it did something underwhelming. The service stayed up for a little while before getting the axe. Years later this company admitted that they created the service strictly to collect people's information.

In theory, but studies have shown otherwise. People feel more alone and there are far more cases of mental illnesses.

Huge industry, both commercially and in the Fed., and still growing by leaps and bounds.

Show me a study of at least ... let's say... 50% of the worlds population.

Then dig up that same study from 10, 20, 50 years ago(I don't care you pick?) to compare it to.... otherwise ... no good!

It's not a theory.
Things are better. It's factual.

People are meeting more people than ever before. That part is true. The part you said about "easier to not be alone and lonely" is up for debate. I don't know the studies off the top of my head, but there have definitely been many showing that being able to see what everyone else is doing at all times has had some negative effects on people. Particularly with everyone else's life on Facebook looking so glamorous while your life is so depressing. That's a common feeling in the social media phenomenon.

I understand what you are saying.

The reality is we are living through a time where it is setting up what the future is to be.

If soneone is depressed about soneone else's "better life"(which is usually bs) lol... on Facebook. Then that is a deep rooted issue that was already there.
