Wow, really? Every local, regional, and national media outlet has Dallas as a Super Bowl contender. But you compare this team to the Bengals. That's pretty telling to me.

Because I am a show me person. What has this team done under Garrett that has led you to believe they are a legit contender at this point? They have one playoff win in 6 full seasons. Never sniffed a title game.

Note, I never said they can't become a legit contender but until this team actually shows the capability of being a real threat in the postseason, calling them a contender is just as much wishful thinking as reality.

And the Bengals are an apt comparison. A team that has had regular season success but spits the bit in the postseason. How are we any different, at this point, than them?

AGAIN most head coaches do not call their own plays. I listed an example of a coach most here love and even he didn't do it. We are talking about play calling here and showing you can be a good head coach without that responsibility. Do you understand now?
There is nothing to follow, you made an unfortunate coaching comparison between Jimmy and Jason- a guy who is not calling plays because he failed miserably at it....yet was promoted largely based on his role as the offensive coordinator and play caller. That is not the same as being a previous National Championship college coach and ultimate NFL dynasty builder who happens to not call plays.

Exactly. It's comical that some want to anoint him a great coach and he has what, 1 playoff win in 6 full years?

He's basically Marvin Lewis at this point. In fact, Garrett's start is eerily similar. A couple good seasons, a turd season and a few mediocre seasons.

Before I admit I was wrong about Garrett, I'd like to finally see some real playoff success.

This season marks Garrett 7th full season. In six season he has made post season twice and is 1-2

Belichick in his 1st 6 full season as a HC he made post season once and 1-1 before winning a SB.

I'm sure some excuses will be made for Belichick which would not be afforded to Garrett since it messed up the agenda.

Because this team is Dak Prescott's team now. The recent playoff failures could of just as easily been pinned on Romo, and or Garrett. The recent past of the Bengals shows Andy Dalton not ready for prime time, if he'll ever be and one of Lewis's defensive goons, like Burfict, making horrible, boneheaded plays at the worst possible time. I see Prescott as a better QB than Dalton. And no low football IQ players like Burfict, and Pacman Jones on defense that cannot be relied upon in big moments in the playoffs.

Johnson has been a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in recent years. But Garrett has the second most wins, (59 I think) as HC among all who have led the team. Landry, coached the 'Boys for 29 seasons & is comfortably ahead of Garrett with 250 wins. Garrett's still very young & will catch up to Landry's wins. He's only ahead because he's coached longer, IMO.

Of course, Johnson does have those Super Bowl victories as well as a playoff record of 7-1 compared to Garrett's 1-2 record. But who's to say Garrett can't win a couple of those eventually? He's a very young coach. Alot of fans tossed him or wanted to toss him under the bus his first year as HC. My gosh, since when do great coaches become just that, great, in ONE SEASON. It takes time, and the time has come. He's proven himself to his player's the fans, and the NFL last season by being voted NFL Coach of the year. Getcha popcorn ready. Garrett's just getting started.

So the difference in our lack of playoff success versus theirs is because we now have Dak Prescott and they don't?

And you actually are proving my point. This whole thing started as a discussion of Garrett. My point is that up until now, Garrett hasn't shown enough in the postseason to start calling him a great coach. You, yourself, just said that recently playoff failures can be pinned on Garrett, so you seem to be agreeing with my overarching point.

Again, maybe this is the year Garrett and the Cowboys break through and Garrett shows himself to be an upper echelon, great coach. But I have reached the point where I need to see him do this in the playoffs, not just hope he can do it.

Okay continue to put your head into the sand then. The rest of us will watch as our head coach gets us to the sb

Regardless of whether posters agree Garrett is a great coach, I have always been impressed with Garrett's teams never quitting on him.

I guess it's all a matter of semantics and how one defines "great".

When I am asked who the "great" coaches are, those are guys like Belicheck and Carroll............. SB winning coaches, with a consistent level of high play from his teams. That's not Garrett. At least not yet.

Nope. And that's not what I said. I see a team coming together under Garrett. The defense is the last piece. If we were a little better on that side of the ball, we would've played in a NFCC by now. Has that been remedied? Time will tell. But we have been contenders two of the last 3 years.

I see what you see. I like this post....I said this in some thread or another a change in Garrett the look of a man onto something that is coming together.

What concerns him and what nails it and makes this post great is this:

If we were a little better on that side of the ball, we would've played in a NFCC by now. Has that been remedied? Time will tell. But we have been contenders two of the last 3 years.

That time will tell is the ongoing defence building, the consistency of the offence and the development of dak

I pray jg achieves the aforementioned targets because I like the look of our future should it happen.

And when he does it, we can stop the debate and call him a great coach. Until then, he's pretty much an unknown quantity still at this point in his career. Maybe he'll be great and that greatness starts this year. Or maybe he'll be like Marvin Lewis, a regular season wunderkind and a postseason dud.

We just don't know at this point.

You can laugh but given the same point in their career it is pretty much the same. Of course Belichick went on to win multi SB over the course of the next 16 years. I don't know what the future is for Garrett but again at the same points of their careers as a HC it is what it is, Belichick was not being looked at as some football god during those seasons

You LOL because it is true. The Hoodie is the GOAT now because you get the gift of hindsight. You are living the NOW of Jason Garrett and their similarities cannot be written off because it kills your argument same way you say there are similarities to Marvin Lewis

Exactly, we saw what Belichick would go on to do over the course of time with Jason we don't know only time will tell.

First of all, let's point out that I have said multiple times that Garrett COULD END UP being a great coach. But he has done nothing to date to warrant the effusive praise. Some of you have already written the book on him and have deemed him a great coach. IMO, he's done nothing to date to warrant such high praise.

Second of all, Belicheck is a rarity. How many coaches in the NFL won only one playoff game in their first 7 years and then started winning SBs? Not many, if any. Maybe Pete Carroll might be the only other one I can think of. Now list for us the coaches who have had little to no playoff success and eventually crapped out as head coaches? That list is a hell of a lot longer. So it's chuckleworthy that the Belicheck comparison keeps getting brought up. Also, let's note that Belicheck won a SB in his 7th season. So if you guys want to use the Belicheck angle, then Garrett better start winning SBs, starting this year.

Which is my point. Oy. And yet there are people in this thread already calling him a great coach. The headline of this thread is from a story saying we need to admit Garrett has grown into a great coach.

Very much so. In 2000 nobody was calling belichick the gold standard of head coaches. Hell he had just gotten fired from the browns a few years earlier

True, by no means am I saying Garrett will achieve the same, I don't know what Garrett will or will not do in the future I am not a fortune teller but I can say it is a factual statement that at the same points of their career Belichick was no different than Garrett. Belichick 1st 6 season 41-55, Garrett 1st 6 full seasons 54-43
