when you have first and goal at the three and you force the ball to dez and go away with a field goal when you have one of the best lines and the best running back in the league and you don't run the ball that is called being dumb
First down was them hurrying to the line and a fade to Dez is a RZ staple. It missed by a foot. or less as once again Jenkins was allowed to shove Dez the entire route.
The only play I really have issue with is second down. It was a run pass option and Dak pulled the ball out because Dez was wide open. He missed the throw.
Last play was 3rd and 3 and passing there is not unheard of. You only run it here if you are sure you are going to run it on 4th down as well. As it was Dak made another bad throw.
The thing is that people act like running the ball is some sort of panacea where it guarantees wins and scores all the time. Those people never consider that their plan might fail too. Marty Schottenheimer was a disciple of said thinking and he used to run Okoye or Byner in those circumstances without fail. He lost big games a lot because he couldn't outscore anyone.
The 900 lbs gorilla in the room that run puritans do not recognize is how the GIants front 7 was playing. Goodson, Casillas, and Collins were selling out hard on runs. Play action looks were taking away their drops completely. It was a big reason why Collins was mostly a nonfactor in coverage all game. The defense was giving us ideal passing looks while making it very difficult for our second level blockers to get home; the backside blockers simply could not reach at all down after down.
Additionally, Fred could not block Harrison. As great as he is, he was hitting him once and Harrison easily shed his hands and went on his way. This was particularly pronounced in the first half when he was fresh. There had been several runs where Zeke had to dodge him in the backfield.
Given the ideal pass looks and the difficulty blocking the DT, I have no issue with pass reads or calls at that point in the game. The 2nd down play was executed to perfection with the exception of the pass from Dak. Nobody wants to point the finger at the golden child though. We have our whipping boy.
