of course they talked positively of him. because he had potential...what did you expect for them to say he sucks and in two years we will cut him!!!! come on you can't be that naïve....

and in the NFL until this year, if you went on IR, you could not come back for the remainder of the regular season. even if he recovered. rules are rules. and if they didn't put him on IR, then you lose a spot on the 53 man roster. with that said, that was a great opportunity for Rico. study play book, watch film. LEARN.
negative news, perhaps coming out of the IR, he still didn't know his assignments. he still didn't know the playbook. and probably (I wasn't in the building, but neither were you), he wasn't studying film and showing expected dedication of someone who was declaring he is about to take the NFL by storm...he said it. not coaches. not you. not me. him opening his mouth. some call it confidence. most call it stupidity. great ones never gloat (well 99% don't).
and by 2018, 3 years, he still doesn't kow the play book. he still doesn't know his assignment. perhaps he thought this is flag football, just show up, run around and catch a few balls and you are a star....all the coaches and even Stephen and jerry said, he needs to continue to improve and he is got ways to go....
I guess rico got the message....you actually have to put in a lot of work and study....that's the part people forget....to be good at NFL craft.....thus he maybe improving.

rico is a good pass catcher. and he is more athletically talented....perhaps not as football talented....there is a big difference between the two. and regardless of what everyone says, he needs to block or attempt to block as a TE. If he doesn't and everytime he is in a game, he is going on routes, then the offense is predictable and I can adjust my defense accordingly. if he can't pick up a blitzer or and edge rusher and zeke or Dak get killed because he whiffed, you would be screaming for his head on a platter...even Zeke has to block. even WRs have to block. its fundamental to football, but average NFL madden playing, fantasy football playing fan is only focused on passing yards and catches. and they are not asking him to be a great blocker, but understanding his assignments and attempt to make a block....if he doesn't know his assignments....that's on him. there is plenty of film, playbook and coaches teaching. perhaps he is an athlete and not a football players and there in lies the big difference.

they are not forcing him to play like witten. they know he is light years away from that. they are trying to get him to have basic fundamentals of football as a TE not just catch passes. again, that makes him extremely one dimentional and easy to defend. I see him on my side as a defender, I am just blitzing the back field, either he is going on a route and I get a free shot or he is blocking air...either way, I get to the RB or QB.

That's a lot to write about a player who may get cut soon!!!

Good post. It seems some fans think all there is to playing a game is drawing a pass pattern on a chalk board and telling a player to do that. If that's all it took we could just hire a 6'10" backetball player to run into the end zone and we would throw the ball up too high for anyone else to reach. But it's not that simple. If the roster limit was 70 instead of 53, or if there were no roster limit at all, it would be easier to keep a player that is so far behind in experience and understanding. I still think Rico will probably make the team, but it's a much tougher decision than some want to make it.

the hype was last preseason. he went to have 2 amazing preseason games. then the idiot speared him in the head and cost a huge injury. that ability to play, both physically and mentally, does not just vaporize in a few months. garrett cannot reverse the narrative 1 year later and expect no one to catch the inconsistency.

then he was not taken of ir to get reps. reps is what he needs and he was deprived of it in the wasted season that was last year.

he has not had 3 years. 1 year of practice on the practice squad and 1 year on ir where he cannot practice with the team. the lost time on ir is probably what damaged the relationship.

he can be a redzone threat right now. it is the job of the coaches to make the best of the available talent. instead they try to force things that dont fit either because of ability or of experience. what blocking i have seen was not bad recently.

and if there is concern for dak, why not put him in the first quarter while it is rush at qb. instead even schultz got in before him.

Which is why they found it so important to have strict conformists like Rolando McClain, David Irving, Randy Gregory, Cole Beasley and Dez Bryant.

Rico's situation isn't about his personality, it's about the coach's belief that he still has a lot of ground to make up in understanding the game.

first, his blocking is making progress according to latest reports.
second, his ability to get the ball was what dez provided, only at 1/15 the salary. in fact, i would say rico can get the ball better than dez could.
third, we are not superbowl favorites this year, not close. we should develop players with the talent, instead of players with limited talent.

He was a good TE, nothing world changing and not better than Witten. So, I don't understand why there are some still butt hurt he left. He left a few teams. Players do it all the time.
He wasn't this All Pro TE, he had a couple good seasons and the rest were mediocre. Look at his statistics among great TEs and see for yourself. Hell, he had ONE season he played all 16 games.

Are you sure you aren't thinking about an episode of young and the restless? This is football, not a soap opera. OF course, this web site can be a soap opera too.

I don't really care if they keep him but, listening to the coaches they just don't think he gets it and I think they are in the camp of moving on from him
at the end of the week. Maybe the Jets or Pittsburgh can make use of him.

ESPN's Todd Archer does not expect Cowboys TE Rico Gathers to make the initial 53-man roster.

Gathers is a favorite of the fantasy community because of his receiving ability, but he has apparently not shown enough as a blocker to earn a role. Considering the state of their passing-game weapons, it makes sense for Dallas to keep Gathers around simply because of his big-play ability, but it does not seem like that will happen. Blake Jarwin will likely be Dallas' main pass-catching weapon at tight end, but he is only worth a look in extremely deep leagues.

the coach i really like is the rams coach with amazing game management skills and apparently great offensive mind.

instead we get a personnel guy who is also bad at game management.

this is 2018 and millenials do not conform like previous generations.
some more than others.
being able to work with them is necessary to extract the best talent like what nba coaches have learned.

the rumor is rico liking a tweet about firing garrett probably due to frustration on being left on the ir losing reps and service time.

I agree, but bilicheck played starters in a meaningless 16th game of the season, to keep the team sharp.... we came into GB game, with a week off and the starters essentially not having had a meaningful practice and game in three weeks. they didn't look sharp at all to begin the game.

well, to be honest, this thread was never about rico, it was "bash garrett" in disguise and you could see how quickly it changed, to all of garrett's flaws and not about rico

the typical route is to grab the oc or the dc who does well to solve one side of the football.
then let him choose the oc and dc.
