How long do running quarterbacks last in the NFL?

Do people think Mike White was drafted by accident? If the Cowboys really thought they were set with two young QBs already on the roster, why draft another one?

They had their doubts, regardless of what Jerry says publicly. Dak is the guy for now. Whether he's still the guy two years from now remains to be seen, so play to his strengths and get the most out of him. He's not shown enough yet to be worried about protecting him for a decade.

I doubt Mike White was drafted to be the back up "guy." We literally had nothing behind Prescott, which is what got us into trouble with Romo although Zeke was a nice consolation prize. I'd think they'd have tried to score a QB earlier than the 5th round if it was as you say.

With the QB rules the way they are, coaches might be wise to exploit running Dak this year a little more than they have.
The Cowboys really have no other choice.

This offense cannot succeed with Dak throwing exclusively from the pocket. He's not Troy Aikman and never will be. He's not accurate enough.

So the offense had to be designed to maximize what he does best. And that is use his feet. Not every play. But enough to keep defenses guessing and keep them from focusing solely on Zeke.

Keeping defenses back opens up play action also. It gives the offense a chance

To be accurate, both Fran T and Roger we’re more scramblers than runners. They ran principally to extend passing opportunities, rather than running to gain yardage.

The line between scrambling QBs and running QBs needs to be more clearly defined.

There are really no T formation running quarterbacks today...so one is playing with semantics then.

How long do running quarterbacks last in the NFL?

Name some running quarterbacks and how long their career was in the NFL.
There hasn't been too many for a good sample size. Cunningham was a fantastic runner and lasted a while. Even Vick lasted longer than I ever expected.

4-5 years.

Cunningham got hurt around 4-5 years in, and couldn't stay healthy after that.

Cam has had several injury problems. To be seen.

How do you define a QB as a running QB?

Dante Culpeper ran good but and I think that ultimately cost him his career. He really was not that good of a passer from a stand in the pocket find the open guy. His playbook was throwing it randy and if he is really covered throw to cris if that is not there run.

Newton is the prototype now.

Dak has a strong frame, hasn't yet had an injury. I don't think it's out of the question he can play another 7-10 years as a running QB.

Not much of a throwing QB either
Come on now.

He is below average passing, sure, but he is top 3 in the league as a running QB - as his record proves, see my sig.

Average that out, prove it as sustainable - you get someone in the ballpark of Cam Newton.

He's really not.

The prototype is guys who are mobile passers. Wentz.

Dak doesn't play like Wentz. He does play similar to Newton.

I don't get why this community is digging deep trying to find ways to throw Dak under the bus.

Our greatest QB ever, Roger Staubach, lasted 11 years, played in 5 SBs, 6 NFC championship games, and still holds the team record (Dak nearly broke Sun) for most rushing yards by a QB in a single game- 91 yards. Roger was one of the best running QBs in NFL history.

The key is to be smart. Running QBs who last are smart running QBs.

Mike Vick played 10+ seasons and was more of a running QB than Dak is.
