Had to get this off my chest because I keep seeing people post about how Dak has 1 year left on his deal. Unless both Dak and his Agent suddenly get brain damage there is 0% chance he plays on a 1 year $840K contract. To me this is just common sense and needs to be put out there so we can discuss the cap and future plans with reason.

I think you are spot on. Too many people here are in denial in the same way that they refused to believe Dez wouldn't get cut and a few other examples.

Lets say he sits. What do you see as leverage for him if he does not play? Will he be better prepared to avoid or sustain injury if he sits out a year?

No. But the Cowboys not having an acceptable substitute would probably be pretty significant leverage.

Not necessarily. As I said, a lot depends on what other teams think of Dak.

Dak's absolute best chance to succeed, in terms of contract, in the NFL is Dallas. Dallas, IMO, will pay him more then anybody else. That's just my opinion.

Yeah. This is an academic conversation anyway, because Jerry will extend Dak in the off season.

I’m not disagreeing with what you are saying in principal. But you seem to be implying that Dak improving as a QB is more important than financial security. Do you not agree that even if Dak were to sit out the entire year he would get paid a MINIMUM contract of $10M the following next year? Even if it’s only as a backup...

That's the discussion. Will Dak sign for what Jerry Offers? That is why I say, Jerry will pay him more then anybody else.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is currently on a 1 year deal of 3.3m per annum, mostly unguaranteed. He's a free agent at the end of this season.

Prescott is no better than Fitzpatrick. If we can get similar production out of 3.3m per annum from a Fitzpatrick or similar veteran QB, then why pay Dak 20m per annum? Why even pay him $10m per annum.

Best option for 2019 right now is to keep Dak on his rookie contract and sign Fitzpatrick to a 1year deal as backup/competition. Assess again at end of 2019 and unless Dak has pro bowl numbers, roll the dice with a first round draft pick in 2020.

The extension he gets is a franchise tag.

He's getting 20 mil

I want to throw up

If any QB should take less in the league its Dak. He needs a good team around him to be successful. He isnt a type of QB that can carry a team. If he gets greedy and wants to much then the money cant be used elsewhere and he will suffer (as with the fans)

You'll be on suicide watch WHEN Dak signs his extension (lol)

I'm saying that financially, there is no upside to sitting out a year, so far as I can see. I am not certain where the 10 Million Minimum is coming from but lets say he does get paid 10 million, who would it be more beneficial to sit out a year and get paid 10 million, as opposed to getting that a year earlier?

I say Jerry will pay to keep him off the market.......IMO that means one of two options; 2019 long-term deal in the range of the current tag amount of $23 -25M or he plays out his rookie deal and gets 2020 franchise tag ( likely $25-27M )

The sooner the better. Get him signed long term.

I do not know what he will get offered. I'm just saying that I do not see him sitting out next season, regardless.

$10M contract is the going rate for a mediocre backup QB, ie Chase Daniel.

How is he getting paid earlier? I’m confused now. My point is that Dak playing under a $840K contract is a giant risk for him when we all know he will get paid A LOT more than that if all he does is stay healthy.

I’m not arguing the merits of Dak deserving/not deserving a big contract. If it were up to me I wouldn’t pay him either to be perfectly honest with you. I’m just saying that it’s damn near common sense that the 4th year starting QB of the Dallas Cowboys isn’t playing on the last year of his deal with absolutely no financial security.

The angst is that when a team pays an average QB top line money, the results are usually mediocre

That is unfortunately where this team is headed

Add in a trash HC and garbage GM and you pretty much have a recipe for 'continued relevance' but no championship
