A look back, Garrett may not be so bad afterall

So much nonsense in this thread. Compare Garrett to the rest of the league and he’s won more games than most. Compare him to recent coaches under Jones and he’s won more games than most. Look at the youth and talent on our roster and the condition of our cap and we’re better off than most.

We haven’t bee able to beat the best teams in the league since Jimmy/Switzer left. There’s a reason for that, and it isn’t the current head coach. People don’t want to hear it, but there’s a reason the players love him and the front office extends him.

What needs to change to get the Cowboys back on top is above Jason Garrett’s paygrade. I get so tired of the rest of you giving the real problem a pass and just being content with the mediocrity.

He’s not really bad,he’s just not elite good. And that’s what people want is someone who can get this team contending for championships. He’s in that Marvin area right now.where he can take a bad team and get it playing, but not a good one and get in SB position. That’s honestly what people are tired of.

So why dont you just say it is the jones boys fault?
The other thing is he has won more because he has been here longer, chan gailey won more games per year
take the avg wins per year to compare to other dallas coaches. and that in itself doesnt mean a lot, because guys like campo
and even parcells and wade didnt have the talent garrett has right now and in 2016 and 2014.

Look at the youth and talent on our roster and the condition of our cap and we’re better off than most. ......... yes but you cant credit JG with all that,
that is actually the jones boys, JG, McClay that get credit for that,.
However none of that means much without the coaching talent needed to get to a higher level.

Please. Winning at a higher rate than other coaches means something. We’re not talking total wins just because he’s been here longer.

And you’re massively overrating the quality of the team he inherited in 2010. And underrating the quality of the team Parcells left for Wade, for that matter.

And Garrett built the 2014 and 2016 teams, so he gets credit for their wins.

so your saying JG does the drafting now? lol does he get credit for the amari trade too?

As far as winning at a higher rate, I dont know what your refering too, but each former coach had a different team,
and played in a different division, the other east teams, have changed, the giants used to be SB caliber team.

I’m saying what I’ve always said: there completely overhauled their process for drafting and developing players when Garrett took over for Wade. They changed the personnel and the structure of the scouting department to match what Garrett wanted. They elevated McClay. Yes, Garrett gets credit for the drafting.

You really think the Cooper trade happened without the blessing of the HC??? Seriously?

This is oft said and not actually accurate. Garrett is a voice in drafting, for sure and has his input, but trying to suggest he's "the" voice and the impetus for all of this is false. For example, McClay wasn't the product of Garrett. McClay was promoted to his current role by Jerry because he wanted one voice that could process the information from the coaches and scouts. This came after the infighting after the Shariff Floyd situation where scouts had him 5th on their entire board but Marinelli and other coaches wanted no part of him and things got a bit contentious.

So Jerry wanted a guy who would basically be the point person for the scouts and coaches. This was reported in multiple places.

He just seems like a 8-8 or 9-7 coach. And look what happens everytime we get to the playoffs. We are just flat. This last game just looked like a different team than the regular season. I expected a better effort.

So once again when we win some games Jason gets credit for building the great roster, but when we lose it's the front office's fault for not giving poor Jason enough good players.

It's laughable at this point. 2012 wants its post back.

He's an average to above average head coach.

Frankly, for some, that's good enough because I think some are just afraid that it could be worse.

There is nothing above average about Garrett. None. He's never even had back to back playoff seasons since stepping on this staff as an OC.

It's always been an interesting argument. On one hand, the team, or more specifically Garrett, failed to advance in 2014 and 2016 because they didn't have the talent on defense to win so how can you hold that against Garrett? So in other words, according to some, 6 years after Garrett revamped and overhauled player acquisitions and player development, they still didn't have enough defensive talent.

That apparently isn't Garrett's fault though. That's simply one of the pitfalls of working with Jerry.........

But as you said, win a few games and think the team is on the upswing, suddenly the improving roster, heading into Year 9 is largely due to Garrett.............. until the team inevitably fails to do anything of note, then it's Garrett simply can't be judged based on a flawed roster.

And the wheel just keeps going around and around.

It’s often said, by me, because it has the benefit of being entirely accurate. Some just don’t want to believe it and instead prefer to remain confused as to “what exactly Jason does in Dallas.”

The reality is, there’s a clear demarcation in what we did to acquire player personnel that started when Garrett was hired and immediately after the reorganization of the scouting department we implemented when he got here. It wasn’t by magic, and it wasn’t by conincidence.

And yes, scouting, coaching, and the front office do all work together on these things.

When we win more than other teams in the conference over a three year span, yes, the HC gets credit for that.

When we then lose to a more talented team in the postseason, yes, the reason can then also be because of personnel. It’s not a contradiction to say the personnel is good, but not good enough to beat the very best teams in the league. That’s where we are right now.

What's hilarious to me is that people always label JG as this master motivator, yet every time there is a huge game to be played, there is almost 2 full quarters of sloppy, unprepared football.

This. Always. Big games, against teams we should steamroll, after a Bye week, etc, etc.

we havent' consistently beat good team since Jimmy.

We beat some good teams despite Switzer. he sucked.

He don't look bad as long as he don't have to do what most real HC's do.......he's on year 9 of his on-the-job-training......my guess is he'll retire while still in training.
