How do we know the Cowboys aren’t offering market rate and D-Law isn’t holding out to be the highest paid DE in football?

We don't but the reports say they aren't even close, usually if player/team is close to a deal the reporting will bear that out

Demarcus Lawrence was suspended.

He had a year when Benson Mayowa had more sacks than him.

He's had multiple injuries to his back and shoulder.

He took a while to even be good.

He's now a very good player. He's not elite.

I would very much like him here, but I fully understand the Cowboys reluctance to sign him to big money.

And if the Colts will give up a 1 and 3....bye.

I have no issues taking a 1 and a 3 either, but i also have no issue saying DL has been an elite player the last 2 seasons

But not being close could mean the expectation of either side - or both sides - is out of line.

Yup they want Mack money. Not going to happen here.

That's completely insane, and I am big on having a good DL. But Mack himself was overpaid because he had them by the balls. They traded two first rounders for him, they had no choice but to give him a ridiculous contract. Add to that DLaw is not Mack. I truly hope he comes around and finally does accept a kings ransom instead of Eldorado. But at this point I'm not confident. No disrespect.

He wasn't elite last year.

Look, he's really, really good. I especially like the way he plays the run, which is where I think he is elite.

However, if I'm the team, I'm not giving him $80 million guaranteed. Not for a player who has injury and suspension history like his. Backs and shoulders are scary.

This has been obvious for a while now.

The Witten thing might have been the very last straw.

I know if I played with my arm hanging off for an entire year while Witten did nothing and came right back in like he never left, I would be a little miffed.

You think he'd work for the same contract Witten just signed? Witten is making 1/5th of what he made prior to retiring. I'm sure if DLAW would play for 1/5th of his last years pay, he'd get a deal too.

IMO its like the second Dez contract, both sides are going to wait until the market is set and then match what is out there. DLaw's agent wants Dallas to set the market but that kind of thing is old Jerry, not new Stephen.

I have been saying thi for a while. This contract is a lot like the Dez contract. He's not a top 5 DE and wants to get paid like one. Buyer beware on this contract.

If he played offense, he would have been paid. They had no issues in making Smith, TFred, Martin the highest paid at there positions when they came up for contracts.

They were arguably the very best at their positions. Tank is not the best edge rusher by a long shot.

regardless of what some fans say this is not going to end well for the cowboys and lawrence

I've been saying that for a while, but people with arose colored glasses keep saying it's all going to be fine. The lack or surgery isn't helping Tank's cause either.

I need a diagram of the don't pay DLaw people and the people wanting to sign every free agent out there.

It's simple.

1. DLaw has back and shoulder issues.
2. DLaw has a suspension history.
3. He wants $80 million guaranteed despite #1 and #2.
4. He's damn good, but not truly elite.
5. Defensive end value is dropping because of quick-throw offenses.
6. Interior lineman are now more valuable.
7. The franchise tag pays him handsomely an takes all of the above into consideration.
8. Earl Thomas can completely change the defense and is a necessary signing, with other teams competing for him.
9. No other big-name free agent is needed, unless you want to go after Gerald McCoy.

We need to make a decision. Either pay the guy or trade him.

Waiting around isn't going to do anyone any good especially since he won't have the surgery.

Remember how happy just about all of you were last season when we tagged him instead of signing him long term? A few of us knew how dumb that was and it's going to lead to this contract being insane thanks to how some of the other guys have been paid.

As in suspended once for taking something to recover from surgery?

Are you serious with this or is this a gag that didn't translate?
You don't get a suspension for a first offense, right?

I do not agree. Passrush is the name of the game. Without DLAW, ET will not change the defense. The defense will decline. We need to lock up Lawrence, sigh some more pass rushers, and then worry about safety once the DL line is in good order.

I haven't heard that we wants $80 Mil guaranteed. Big obstacle if true. But he should be getting the $20M per based on the contracts out there.

We’ve seen how bad the D looks with no pass rush. This is one position you may have to overpay especially since they lost Irving who’s a good inside rusher.

If I am him then I get my shoulder fixed and sign the 20. Play lights out and get paid next year.
… gets hurt in training camp/preseason/week whatever of the regular season, never plays again vs. signing a long term deal with more guaranteed money. And theres no guarantee he plays lights out or the shoulder repair works. Its a gamble. Neither side seems to be very motivated to negotiate at this point. It's been the MO of the cowboys during FA to go on vacation during the initial stages. They seem to operate under no sense of urgency considering the state of the defensive line these days. Just wish they'd figure it out.
