David Irving: Garrett told me to 'quit, smoke all the weed I want'

I think the NFL should just get rid of the test. Actually , I believe all jobs should get rid of the test. But like me and many others, we have to take drug tests and have to make a choice which one is more important. I chose my job in 1997.

I think the only time the workplace should test for marijuana is if the employee shows up impaired. Then they should test for all drugs plus alcohol. Marijuana stays in the urine for 3 days, and up to a month depending on the person. So as it stands, you can't even smoke on Friday night then go to work on Monday unless your workplace will use a saliva sample. It only lingers for a few hours in saliva AFAIK, but I'm not sure how commonplace spit tests are.

I’ll be praying for him that it doesn’t involve prison time. He’s not very bright and has issues on top of that.

What prison has to do with retiring/quitting professional football and smoking weed? lol

Even if Garrett said this, was he really wrong about it? It's obvious Irving had more passion for the green than he did for football. That's fine. To each their own but you can't have both as long as it is illegal to use in the NFL. He chose his path. Let's move on.

Similar thoughts...

As one of probably several gathered here who can speak first-hand about dealing with cannabis addiction and the hazy bubble that cannabis-addicted individuals live inside, when the drug/medicine (whatever you call it, it is what it is) has you in a place of psychological desperation to that degree, it speaks for itself how likely it is that you're going to be able to cognitively function at a high level for an extended period of time (like a whole football season). (And just to be clear, I'm fully aware we're not talking in terms of a biological addiction, but rather a psychological one.)

And it all makes more sense now, in hindsight--what was the ongoing complaint about Irving? Flashes, but not nearly enough consistency.

What we think we know about cannabis use is that it matters if you're using as a teenager and it matters how much you're consuming, and if you're using a lot in those years that your frontal cortex is intensively trying to develop, that's not going to go well.

Seems legitimate to assume Irving used a lot as a teenager.

(I'll avoid the political discussion, except to say, I wish there was a way to 100% ensure that we could keep that from happening with adolescents, and my Spidey-sense says that making access that much more available probably doesn't help.)

I'm sad for the guy, like I'm sad for the very close relative of mine who is 28 going on 18, and still has no clear direction for his life.

Yes, some people are going to make some serious money in that industry. I just don't think that winning the lottery makes for a fulfilled life. There's more to life.

It’s so obvious Garrett is doing stuff like this all the time. It boggles me that it’s not apparent to everybody.

This is one area where I have no trouble with Garrett. As far as organization and leadership skills go, I think he's fine, which is why I've always felt he could be a walk-around head coach as long as he hires the right people and let them run their offensive and defensive systems.

Some feel why have a head coach who doesn't have his own system. My answer to that is the you can end up with someone like Wade Phillips, a great defensive mind who did not have those things needed to be a great head coach.

If Garrett would simply let his offensive philosophy go, this team might have a chance, but he didn't do it with Linehan (who had years of experience as an offensive head coach) so I'll be extremely surprised if he does with Moore. I fully expect our offense to look like a version of last year's with a few twists.

Irving was kicked out at Iowa State. His problems didn’t start when he got to the NFL.

Do you know how messed up you have to be to have Iowa State kick you out? They badly need his talent especially against the competition they face.

He’s a disaster and I wonder how much worse his child’s mother has to be for Irving to get full custody.

Ricky Williams was probably one of the first to receive the so-called NFL lifetime ban for weed. The interesting thing is Williams made it no secret he used and would continue to use. May surprise some but he's still involved with legalization. working on his master degree and no report of jail or prison.

Hell, if I remember correctly we had a former center from the 90's team ( can't think of his name ) that spent a good part of his post-career on legalization also.

One thing I do know from several friends/relatives, awarding custody of kids IS NOT something courts take lightly. No idea how he did it but he certainly had to prove he worthy of the kid's best interest.

I have an addiction to food and shelter. What's one more vice?:muttley:
If you have lower expectations in life, and you have a bank acct bumping a million, and I bet Irving does,, than I can see that smoking weed could be a priority in your life.
