If Jason Garrett goes, so should Dak Prescott

I both agree and disagree with you here. What should happen is that the next coach should decide what happens with Prescott. A big part of the reason why I would not extend him this year.

Prescott shouldn't be tied to Garrett - heck he might improve with a better coach - but the team should let any potential next coach make the call one way or the other.

I think Garrett comes back with another division championship. So if he gets fired, it's something short of that, which will also be the death knell of Dak. While indirectly, I think their fates are tied.

If Prescott is extended and assuming he has just an OK season, and Garrett is not retained, the feeling is that would hinder the team's chances of bringing in some high caliber coaches? A coach wouldn't want to be saddled with a QB he didn't pick? How many get to pick their own?

Let's start with why any HC would take the job, money. These HC's go where the money is and if they have to deal with a QB they'd rather not have, that's part of the job.

As far as attaching Garrett to Prescott, do we know if he even wanted him? I've never seen any one person that was on the Dak wagon but Wade Wilson and they promptly let him walk. They tried for two QB's ahead of him and settled on Prescott. That worked out well and provided "gee, aren't they drafting geniuses" to the Joneses so he's an ego player for them.

In order to put a HC in the position to pick his own, they would have to not extend Prescott and have a losing season putting them in a position to get a new QB. And that would also put the best QB HC in line for the HC job. Another situation like they have in AZ maybe with Riley in DAL?
The only way they change QB's at this point is if they have a top 2 or 3 pick next year, not sure even then as JJ will not admit he was wrong on Dak. I don't see that type of failure, mid round is most likely. They have put all their eggs in the Dak basket and that's the way it will most likely play out. Dak would have to be so bad I just can't see it as QB's do not grow on trees but HC who can say yes do.

I disagree. I think Dak can "survive" a Garrett departure, while I think if Garrett manages to stick around, Prescott undoubtedly would as well. Dak has managed to play well and Garrett has still shown he can mess it up. Conversely, Garrett has never shown me he can coach well if his quarterback isn't playing well (see 2015, or any other time Romo was out).

Personally, I think Sean Payton is that next guy I feel there is one, and I think the Jones family knows exactly what Payton thinks of Prescott. Again, that's just my opinion.

They will extend Prescott instead of waiting until the QB market get's even higher, which it definitely will once some of these older contracts are do for renewal.
No matter how many times you repeat "Jay Cutler" and "mediocre."
If the staff was remotely unsure of Prescott they would have made a move.

Owners hire GMs to build rosters, GMs hire coaches to coaches to coach his team. If a GM is sold in his young vet QB as a franchise player, the chances of his hiring a coach telling him he's wrong is close to zero. Now if he's on the fence ( Dalton, Winston two I kind think of ), I can see a new coach having some input but that's not the case with Jerry and Stephen. Think about you're saying. A new coach comes into an interview and tells Jerry, Stephen and McClay they're all wrong about Dak. How far you think that interview is going.......seriously. (LOL)

The interviewing coach is pretty telling them they don't know what the hell they are doing.

Seriously, just my take, if you look around the league, it's rare coaches are given that authority over the QB position with the exception a few high powder coaches ( Carroll, Peyton, Reid, Belichick comes to mind). Hell, with many teams GM even needs owner approval for decisions impacting QB position.

Payton leaving the Saints for the Cowboys would be a downgrade for him honestly. Anything is possible but I don't see why he'd take the job.

If you consider their current success, why on Earth would he leave New Orleans?

Payton has a better chance of just outright retiring than ever returning to Dallas.

Agree, they would have to mortgage the farm to get a blue chipper because the competition for QB's is going to be strong, even among teams with them on the team. Miami has already said they're open to drafting one after trading for Rosen.

Then the next season we get Lawrence in the draft and if he even stays at the level where he is and doesn't improve, that's going to be nuts unless the team drafting first doesn't have their trigger man.

Because many connect Brees retiring with him leaving and I don't get that or him winning another ring. He and Brees are closely associated with the rebuilding and healing after Katrina and that game to reopen the Dome created heroes they won't soon forget. He still has ties to Dallas and evidently was a real pal of Boogers, according to some, so it just stands to reason he would come back to a team that let him walk.

Dak has NOTHING to do with the ineptitude of JG. They are separate issues. Dak runs the plays he's given. If I have to look at another "get rid of Dak" thread I'm gonna pull my brain out and lick it. You guys will go through great lengths to run him outta town on a rail. All he has done is win since hes been here. Now Garrett...he is inept and should have been gone years ago. NO FAULT OF DAK. NEXT.

Dak is a cash cow for Jerry. Only Brady sells more merchandise. Jerry always places popularity ahead of talent.

I don’t think Garrett is attached to Dak. And Garrett thus far is only who’s survived Dak who in 3 seasons has gone thru 2 OC,2 QB coaches, and all the receivers he begin with. Witten is returning.

If the Moore Experiment doesn’t work then no one is safe with Dak here.
EXACTLY..well said.. HE ISNT ATTACHED.

I generally agree with you. But look at what just happened with Arizona. It’s an issue with following the McVay trend and trying to hire one of these new ‘guru’ coaches. The next logical step is that you have to give them the tools they choose to work their ‘magic’. So I think it could go either way, though I think it’s more likely Jerry chases the yes man that is happy to work with the existing QB.

I don't think "the staff" has had a say in the matter since 1994.

Oh I agree but even in Zona, there's a piece on MMQB site where their GM admitted the whole Murray/Rosen saga was his decision 100%. He was of complimentary of his head coach for never once pushing for on QB over the other one.
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing ( so to speak) whether or not it "should" be the coaches decision. Just it's highly unlikely to happen with Jerry, Stephen, and McClay.....

With Garrett being in the final year of his contract and Jerry Jones already talking this team up - this needs to be it. If Garrett fails to improve upon what we did in 2018, he needs to walk and take Prescott with him.

Normally, I wouldn't attach a player to the coach, but whatever coach we bring in should be allowed to draft the QB that best suits their system. The 2020 QB class is looking to be deep, you potentially have Tua who is in the mold of a Russel Wilson, Herbert who can make every throw on the field with good mobility, and your prototypical pocket passer in Fromm - then you have interesting prospects such as Costello and Eason whom could end up being late first round to early second round picks as well.

Unless Garrett and Prescott take the next step, we should not consider them our future and there will be plenty of options out there to replace and move on.

I see Prescott needs to take alot of steps to justify a contract he is seeking. But please explain what steps Garrett needs to take. And dont say winning the SB. What skills does he have to develope in your view ?

Another question is: Does Garrett has to leave if Dak doesnt get a 2nd contract here?

Then does Dak has to leave when Zeke doesnt get extended ? Or will he decide to just leave because without a talented player in the backfield he would have to shoulder the show which would reduce his own market value.

All those questions.......

All those questions.......

1. Stop drinking before posting

2. I don't think Garrett getting back to the divisional round justifies him returning, I would be hesitant to extend him if he gets to the championship, but it would be tough to let him walk if he gets to and wins a Super Bowl. I don't understand what "skills" you are referring to? The HC's job is to get the most out of each player, get them prepared - I would say getting to a Super Bowl and winning it made them pretty dang prepared

3. Depends on the reason Dak doesn't get his second contract

4. I'd extend Dak before I'd extend Zeke
