More conflicting reports then. It's my understanding that Jerry offered 1 mill north of Gurley money and was told that's not enough.

Depends on what that means. Is it just one million more in total contract value? That could be meaningless if the guaranteed money is less. Is it one million more AAV? Again, that coudl be meaningless if the guaranteed money is still below Gurley.

Or, the other side of this is Zeke is just being a **** asking for significantly more than Gurley got.

81 million doesn't matter. We need to see what's guaranteed. Probably closer to 30 and we will roll with Zeke for 3 or 4 more years then part ways. Im also curious to see how his remaining 2 years are factored in.
Whatever the deal ultimately ends up at, it has to be structured so that the Cowboys can get out of it in 3 years with minimal cap ramifications.

This is likely Zeke's last contract in Dallas

Yeah youre right, I guess it was Lev Bell who was at 30? Hopefully they dont go much past 40 for Zeke.

I fully expect the Cowboys caved and made Elliott the highest paid TB in both total contract value and guaranteed money. I was initially hoping they would dig in and Elliott would sign for around $35MM or so guaranteed after Bell re-adjusted the market. But now I pretty much expect the Cowboys screwed the donkey and reset the TB market close to $50MM guaranteed.

I hope I am wrong.

There was no reset with Bell. The FO wanted to believe that for their purposes for sure. But Zeke is better than Bell and arguably better than Gurley. More durable for certain.

The Cowboys did right getting Elliott back in Dallas. He’s a game changing player and worth the money.

Yeah, he’s better than both, IMO.

The Rams wouldn’t be having regrets if Gurley didn’t have arthritis in his knees, either.

But Bell did reset the market. Almost every other position, a guy like Bell would sign for money in the same ball park as the highest guy. Bell didn't even get close. Gurley's contract is a complete outlier when you compare the highest contracts at other positions and then the 2nd and 3rd highest behind that contract. Gurley got $45MM which is like 60% more than what Bell got and 50% more than the 2nd highest guaranteed contract (Johnson and Barkley).

The Rams made a big mistake. The Cowboys didn't have to repeat it.

But that's part of the point................ TBs take a pounding and often you rarely see the return on investment down the road. The Rams are the text book example of why you don't pay a TB a crap ton of money.

We apparently not only didn't learn that lesson, we might be doubling down on the stupid by paying Elliott even more.

Gurley had bad knees and tons of miles ...hard miles on his body...Zeke has never really been hurt and is healthy. I like his chances. That said, I'm not a fan of this either. It is what it is.

Pretty much. It is what it is. Just have to hope the contract and structure aren't that crazy.

Just to show you how much of an outlier Gurley's deal is and why the Cowboys shouldn't have felt obligated to match it because it was an outlier contract (guaranteed money):

TBs:

Gurley - $45MM
Johnson - $31MM
Barkley - $31MM

WRs:

OBJ - $65MM
Thomas - $61MM
Evans - $55MM

QBs:

Wentz - $107MM
Wilson - $107MM
Ryan - $100MM

TEs:

Reed - $22MM
Burton - $22MM
Ertz - $21MM

DEs:

Lawrence - $65MM
Clark - $62MM
Flowers - $56MM

CBs:

Norman - $50MM
Peterson - $47MM
Johnson - $45MM

There isn't a position in football where there exists such a massive gap between the highest paid player at the position and the 2nd and 3rd highest paid. Gurley's contract was a clear outlier and shouldn't have forced the Cowboys to buckle and exceed the mistake the Rams made.

Zack struggled last year at times. The offense is bad against good teams without Zeke.

Zack struggled?

He was an All Pro in 2018 and most advanced places like PFF and Football Outsiders, if you buy into their analysis, had him as one of the best OGs in football.

boys!
Don't be misled by those who pretend to know the sainted English language.

Honor can be a noun as well.
You want English explained? Come to me, not to those who roll out definitions to bolster their curricula vitae.
Not a noun in contract verbiage!

Gurley’s, knees were bad when he came into the league.

I dont think they did that, it would be highly disappointing if so. I bet a lot of people will freak out when they hear the initial numbers, but after seeing how its broken down it will be reasonable, or so I hope.
