The case against an Earl Thomas trade

As training camp and preseason progresses, I am favoring that no deal be made for Earl Thomas more and more due to his antics on social media and for visiting the Texans training camp earlier in the week. The guy is still under contract and is taking things too far in my opinion. That amount of disrespect to the organization that drafted him and really ultimately created him into the player he is today is unnecessary and I take that as a sign that he is ultimately out for only himself. A type of player that, I believe, this front office is trying to distance themselves from.

We also need to take into consideration that the front office will be taking on his cap hit for this year and a likely 2-3 year extension soon after a trade is done to make him “happy.” All for a player who is nearing the end of his career and very well may have already played his best football, which will create a risk of not being able to afford to pay talent that has been homegrown and have a longer future.

In my opinion, the outlook on our defense is trending upwards and say let's roll with what we got.

As a fan of this team, I would be displeased with a trade that occurs where Dallas gives up anything more than a 5th round draft pick.

With each day that passes, I’m glad a deal hasn’t been made for Earl Thomas.
Thats a very good way of looking at things and I totally agree!

The problem is his first premise is false.

Thomas wasn’t at Texans camp. He went to his alma mater’s, UT’s, practice.

Nothin wrong with that at all.

To me it didnt matter if it was the Texans or not.
I was pretty much talking about the way he has handled the whole situation with his contract and running around on social media. I personally dont think he is worth the money he is going to want because the difference he would improve the team isnt enough to warrant the money and a 2nd round draft pick.

Who cares how he has handled it?

Is he a bad teammate? Nope.

Do players respect him? Yes.

Is he a good locker room guy? Yes.

I probably wouldn’t give up a 2 for him. But he’d also EASILY be the best safety in our team and it’s not even close.

There have been several good points on both sides of why we should or shouldnt get ET. I would like to point out that I feel Dallas will make a trade for ET only if the price of the draft pick comes down to what they had in mind to begin with. Which I dont think is a 1st or a 2nd. He is an upgrade to what we have on our roster at this time again at the right price. If everyone remembers Stephen talking during the draft He said we would never make a trade without knowing what the player had in mind as far as contract and be able to sign him to a long term deal. That tells me that they have an idea of what Thomas wants. As far as the salary cap goes we have a good cap guru in Stephen and he knows how to wiggle the money around where we will not be in cap hell ever again. ET contract can be front loaded where we can easily get out of it after the third year when we need to start signing Zeke. He will be the one that will demand the most money. As far as ET being washed up dont see it just yet and as far as injury he has really only been injured when he had the broke leg. I feel he has 3 years left in him if not more.
However the better that our defensive line gets will only improve our secondary and not having to give up a draft pick or a hugh salary will go a long ways. We havent had a defense like this in 20 plus years and adding ET does make it better. So I have to ask myself if it wasnt for the money or draft pick would everyone be on board with the signing? Does ET on the field help us beat a GB team that scored on us twice in the last minutes in the playoffs?

Too old to begin the training. Quickest way to undo any gains is to dump draft picks and big contracts on old players.

When does the process ever end?

In other words, never add a key veteran that will help you because they are too old and somehow would stunt the continuing but never finalizing growth of a team?

Hopefully it never ends. Veterans can be added but it needs to be value. Think Randy moss to patriots. The big piece to go over the top should be reserved for a team that has made the playoffs multiple years and won multiple playoff games but is stuck.

We are in Year 8 of the Garrett project.

If we aren’t a team that needs a big piece to bust through our ceiling then there is a problem here.

Safety is arguably our biggest need. Thomas would be far and away the best safety on our roster. For a first round pick would I add him?

Probably not. For a third? Definitely.

One of the interesting sidebars to this is that some of the same people who argue against Thomas (not saying you are one, by the way) tend to also think we have a really good, playoff caliber, make some noise in the postseason type of roster......... the exact kind of roster that would lend itself to making a move for an elite vet at a position of need.

I dont disagree that he would be the best safety. But is he plays like he has the last two years

I'm not sure Thomas makes difference in losing to Rodgers. I think pass rush takes care of that.

No doubt he would be the best safety on the Cowboys and he would improve the team. But do they actually need him if they can improve the pass rush. I would like to see how the guys Dallas has handle the secondary.

Nonsense. This team has the makeup to compete and could come out of nowhere to contend just like philly did last year. The biggest issue standing in the way is the below average safety play. That will kill them in the playoffs or maybe even keep th m from getting there. They have plenty of cap room moving forward so that is a non issue. Anyone that actually wants to win this year or next would be on board 100% with an ET trade.

Cannot be made. X Woods was late on every post route down the middle. Get ET in here to teach the youngsters while helping us to the SB.

It amazes me to see so many fans against adding arguably the best safety in the game. I get that he's nearly 30 years old and will want big money, but we're talking about adding a talent that could take our young defense to the next level. The end game is to win a Super Bowl and every Cowboys fan wants that more than anything. Not saying getting ET would mean a guarantee Super Bowl, but it would damn sure make our team better and have a better chance at winning a championship. Like Sydla mentioned in a previous post, we're in year 8 with Garrett. I mean, how long do we have to wait for this team to break out with him at the helm. Go get Thomas and let's go win a damn championship. We've added plenty of young talent through the draft the last few years. Now let's go get that veteran that could potentially take this defense and this team to the next level.

I think the trade will happen late in the preseason, time is on the Cowboys side because Seattle isn't going to pay ET and NFL teams aren't going to meet the crazy asking price.

I think the trade price will be something like a #3 plus a conditional pick based on performance.

I wonder if a 4 and Crawford or T. Will would do it.
