the late jim johnson was an awesome blitzer -

though gambling dangerous in how they leave vulnerable opens, but is blitz scheme and packages was such that it's well designed and you never can get a
clue of when and where it will be coming in from

But spagnola's units have been much maligned in his past teams as DC. heck i wouldn't mind a Saints 4-3 scheme - the first big key no matter who the DC is is successfully being physical enough to stop the run.

And we have not been strong, stout and disciplined enough under Marinelli.
Yep. I was 200x scared more by Jim Johnson’s defenses than anything Donovan did. The 2004-2009 eagles-cowboys matchups were some good ones. Reid in his prime just as Parcells resurrected this franchise and Wade saw its height from that time in 2007 and 2009.

Hmm. See, I think we massively over drafted Zeke and then massively overpaid him. I think Jaylon was a bad risk on a guy who played well last season and who’s been exploited this season.

Hitchens I would have extended sooner if we possibly could have. Letting him get to market at all was where the mistake was. But then, maybe we didn’t have a choice in the matter.
Is garrett overpaid? Answer that like a man and not a fanboy since you offer so many (honest) critiques

I’m a big hitches fan. He was a very intense player for us that always played hard.

he is not and was not worth what kc paid, and couldn’t hold either of our current lbs jock strap.

Dude RoMc and Irving were sooo damn talented! They were constantly around the ball and making impact plays. I wish those nuts in their heads could've been screwed on tight because those are the types of talents you build around! Such a waste of talent!

And then you think about the guys that work insanely hard just to get a spot on the Practice Squad. Total waste.

Hitchens hasn't been very good this year. He's actually been worse than Smith, for as bad as Smith has played.

All the talk about Hitchens, but I always kind of liked Wilson here. No, he wasn't Lance Briggs or anything, but for a dirt cheap player I thought he was underrated.

And yes, I've noticed he shows up more for KC than here. Seems to play with more intensity.

Dude could have been great, if he just wanted to be. He was one, that I really wish would have straightened his head out. I really wanted to see his potential.
Right? He was awesome in 2014 for us, that pick at the end of the Seattle game...... I knew we were a good team after that.

Another coaching blunder. What do the coaches see in Jaylon that has him as a clear cut better player than our backups? And considering how much of a liability Smith is, if the backups are somehow worse why are any of them on the team? You will not find another starting linebacker, at any linebacker position, playing worse than Smith.
This X 1000. It is telling how many people are unaware of how bad Smith is playing. Once I started keying on him....I could not believe what I was seeing. On a down to down basis. On a week to week basis. I kept saying to my self...the coaches and players watch this film...and nothing gets leaked to the media. The opposition sees this film....and no one talks about how overrated this guy is? My only conclusion is that he is hurt...so everyone inside and outside the organization is giving him a pass. The Bears went after him 3 straight times...that tells you all you need to know. That is how easy they thought it should be. We better hear about him having off season surgery for an injury he has been playing with all year. Or this was one of the worst contracts we have ever handed out. If he plays like this next year...he might as well retire. Because he is not going to make a NFL roster for anyone.

I think a lot of folks missed the premise of my question. I am not asking would you rather have Hitchens and Wilson for LVE and Smith in a clean swap. I am asking, would you swap LBs if it also meant the Cowboys would have had an opportunity to draft an impact DT? Its a hypothetical of course. I believe the Cowboys over-value LBs and undervalue DTs and Safeties. I believe average LBs behind a quality pair of DTs would be more effective than 3 first round picks at LB but a bunch of JAGs playing DT.

And btw, for those who have forgotten, Hitchens left after the 2017 season when, I believe, the Cowboys were still in CAP jail. I think they wanted to sign him but just could not fit him into their cap plans after Romo retired.

PFF is pretty bad but fwiw they grade Hitchens a 52 and Jaylon a 73.
That is for 9m a year versus 10.8m

Jaylon's best asset is his physical play going forward.
He is not going to cover WRs... which is just sheer stupidity of scheme.
That's essentially a prevent scheme.

The defensive scheme being so bad that Garrett gets fired feels like Wade Phillips karma tbh.

Letting Hitchins go was a mistake.

no, it was the right thing to do, he wouldnt thrive here and the low informed would still be calling for him to be let go.

if you want to be success, leave dallas.

Are you suggesting he shouldn't be asked to cover WRs or RB to the flats but blitz and blow up middle runs?
Cause me too.

I think people make way too much out of Smith (and our other LBs) pass defense deficiencies. I think our scheme has as much to do with Smith's pass D issues as physical limitations. I mean even LVE, who people swore was a pass defense whiz, was struggling at times this year and getting beat.
