I am torn on this stuff. Clearly the intentions here are a good thing. I have completely flipped on Smith though. Any other player I would like this. Smith? Just seems phony to me. This guy is all about his brand and image. I wish he would have mastered football a few more seasons before diving head first into this stuff. It seems like such a distraction for a guy that repeatedly avoided contact as a NFL linebacker. I see more of that this coming season and I will be convinced the guy isn’t serious about football but is really serious about being Jaylon Smith.

Am I wrong here?

Yes, you are wrong. First, while I agree he was less impactful this last season, he was 6th in the NFL in tackles, and that can't happen if a player is as committed to avoiding contact as you indicate. I think the issue with him as a player is simply that they are trying to make him a middle LB, and he is better suited to OLB. He just isn't that physical, brutish interior type of player a MLB needs to be. But second because why should philanthropy be restricted to individuals who have mastered their profession, and why can't have interests outside of football?

Agree 100%. Tax write-offs should be entitled to anyone who is in that tax bracket. I'm all for it

Over shoot. I do not want them living next to the practice facility. I would prefer they not run away from tackles and not sell sunglasses during the season.

Smith clearly suffers from a lack of self awareness. It’s a problem.

A problem with whom ? the coaches ?... his fellow teammates ?.... or certain fans that want so badly to create a villain to love to hate ?

I think as fans we tend to be more tolerant of athletes actions away from the field as it relates to their performance on the field. I think if Troy Aikman or Demarcus Ware in their prime was associated with all the news Jaylon has their would be fewer fans calling it out. I myself am glad to see him being involved to the level he is. Id like to see improvement on the field as well but I haven't forgotten bobby Carpenter so it could be worse

hes being targeted and over analyzed because he got paid, then hes an extra happy over exuberant person by nature even when the team is doing bad..this rubs people the wrong way but it his natural personality he chooses to not be a down and negative person..this rubs people the wrong way like a Tim Tebow did with his happy go lucky religious views.. he is not all of a sudden become a Debbie downer in bad times, its not who he is..expecting people to ACT a certain way in situations you FEEL they should, is a personal issue.. these are humans with unique personality's and yes flaws , we have freewill and so do they.. you do not get to control that..thats a YOU issue as fan..

he finished top 5 in tackles had 3 sacks and even in an off year it doesnt spear hes avoiding tackles more then he took a bad angle or had a bad play..thats not an entire season//like Zeke and Tank they became under a microscope after te big new deals and now every small things that happen to most players are being blown up..

at least hes not beating woman, stealing, kneeling, getting arrested on the regular and suspended..being ripped for being himself is selfish viewpoint IMO..

get over it hes on the payroll and will be for along while no matte how much you complain here, hes not going anywhere and your bank account is not being effected..its a football game and like most of us we have interests outside of our jobs/careers.. ..

the team on whole played poorly not many bright spots , time to let it go and lets look forward to 2020..

We've got bigger problems with Jaylon. Go watch him get completely stonewalled by a blocking bag at the Pro Bowl. He ain't right.

And you go look up the definition of what a tackle is in the NFL. He had 83 solo and 59 ast tackles which ranked 6th in the NFC.
Son, you clearly don’t understand football. Don’t talk to us about numbers. We’ve been watching football from our recliner with a beer in our hand longer than these so called “athletes” have been alive. Hell, I’ve forgot more about football than Jaylon Smith will ever know.

I remember, back when my Pawpaw took me to see the Cowboys play in nineteen hundred and sixty eight, he pointed out Lee Roy Jordan and said “Junior, that right there is a football player”. Ever since, I’ve been able to just look at a Cowboys linebacker and know right away if they had any of Lee Roy in ‘em. Took about four seconds for Jaylon to fail the Pawpaw test.

That Jaylon may know how to sell sunglasses but he ain’t no Lee Roy Jordan, that’s for sure.

Now, I don’t care for my modern Cowboys to have any interests outside of football, especially if it involves doing “community work.” That sounds like communism. I also don’t want em tryin’ to sell anything or make much money. Now hold on, I know you may *think* that sounds like communism too but you’d be wrong. It’s called respect and leadership.

Speaking of sellin’ stuff, I don’t want to hear any nonsense about Walt Garrison sellin’ chew back while he was playing. We only kinda knew that it caused cancer and when I started packin’ a dip, I didn’t care because Walt said it would give me “pure tobacco pleasure”.

Anyway, it was different because he played for Landry and if Coach Landry was ok with it, then we’d be fools to second guess. Besides, everyone knows that Skoal Long Cut makes you more of a man than any of these new Cowboys could ever be. Well, except for The Judge, The President, General Lee, Wolf Hunter, and Fredbeard.

Damn sure Skoal will never keep you from “avoiding contact” like that sunglasses sellin’, charity contributin’, community awareness raisin’, D-Law befriendin’, Hot Boyz tweetin’, Jaylon.

If none of that convinced ya, all I can say is you ain’t been watching close enough to your tv on Sundays. You might also be a commie.

Now, let me crack open this here Budweiser and get back to watching my vhs of Super Bowl XII

The thing that bothers me the most about Smith, is him thinking he had a Pro Bowl year.

And celebrating while other player are injured and your team is getting their *** kicked.

It speaks to more of that lack of self awareness so many of us see. Hopefully the new asst head coach can speak to and get through to guys like Smith.

This I agree with. I'm not a fan of on field celebrations in the middle of a game under any circumstance because the accomplishment is in the win, not one play, but that's especially true when the team is getting beat. I understand being pumped up and letting the intensity show through, but like you said, what he does seems to go beyond that and appears to be a celebration. He's not the only player that does this, but it can be pretty noticeable with him.

I have no problem with his off the field stuff or his "self marketing". This is the USA where it's encouraged to do more.

The problem I have with Jaylon is some of the worst linebacking performances I've ever seen from a Cowboy. He won't take on an offensive linemen, he overruns plays and is completely unable to bend his knees, dig in and make a quick change of direction. Watch Mattison's run against us when we played the Vikes. Literally thrown out of the play with a tiny push from a pulling guard. Awful performance by Jaylon.

How can a guy who what’s 6th in tackles in the NFC be crapped on for avoiding contact? What the hell?

You’re naive if you think tackle totals are an indicator of ability or physical play; you get credited for running a guy out of bounds or gently tapping a player while he’s on the ground the same way you credited for spearing a guy Bill Goldberg style in his tracks.

Tackles are an unofficial stat and the reason you hear about teams sending in their numbers compared to what the league has tallied.

I don't care what he does off the field. I don't care what any of them do off the field because I have 0 interest in them beyond the field.

I do care that he was the King of Regression on the team last season and celebrating when the team was losing. He is in the single most critical position on the D and failed to deliver too many times. I am assuming Nolan's D is like most of the others, the MLB should lead the team in tackles as Landry's did every season he coached and Johnson's did as well.

I wonder if he's 100% or if he ever will be but if I can see his obvious drawbacks on the field, I don't think that's lost on an OC. I think Vander Esch's presence on the field last season helped cover these flaws and Sean Lee was the physical guy in the LB corps last season, that should not be. If he has the same kind of season this year, they should replace him and let him pursue his off field endeavors.

Whoa. WHOA. WHOA!

You guys have lost perspective on the IMPORTANT things here. I want to know how many condoms that Trojan thinks is a "year's supply." I mean, if you ask my wife, we could be talking about an ENTIRE 12-Pak here.
Do they keep? I mean, you can let them roll over to the next year, can't you?
