Why's this an issue? Wouldn't the next HC, if he had any brains at all, more than likely try and obtain Garrett for his staff? If they were to know the situation before hand they'd probably say hell ya, thanks for saving me alot of work. Right? I mean, it seems everyone rants and raves over Garrett so Jerry can just say " Hey, I went ahead and got Garrett for ya."

LOL... when you get a ridiculous notion in that empty cranium, you just don't let it go, do ya??

Hey, it's my old buddy Cliff Clavin, CZ's biggest windbag! Didja get tired of boring people to tears at the Ranch and Usenet with your worthless, fact-free, unsolicited opinions?

I guess the Fins shouldn't have hired Dom Capers as defensive coordinator before hiring Cam Cameron as head coach... in fact, go to their website and look up all their coaches, and you'll find that Cameron hasn't hired ANYBODY yet, and will probably not hire more than 2 or 3 coaches for that staff...

So now we're patterning ourselves after the Fins? My, how our standards have plummeted. We're somehow obligated to emulate their mistakes? Isn't it enough that they've unloaded Garrett on us? How much more damage must they inflict? They emasculated Cameron by telling him who he had to work with, and now you want the eunuch strategy imported to Big D? No thanks, Nancy.

And the Steelers basically insisted that Mike Tomlin keep Dick LeBeau, and the majority of the staff that Cowher left behind... or are you suggesting the Steelers are not a "competent, adult organization"??

They "insisted"? What does that mean? Either Tomlin had the authority to retain LeBeau or he didn't. Which is it?

If you get a chance to hire one of the better prospects out there, you do it, when you're the GM of a team searching for a coaching staff... you don't worry too much about what ORDER you hire them in, you jump on them when the opportunity presents itself...

You won't attract "quality" if you rob a HC of basic powers/duties. That's why we're hearing names like Norv and Phillips bandied about. Jimmy had hiring latitude, but power-mad Jerry won't let that happen again, so the team (and fans) will have suffer in deference to his massive ego. Just like the rest of us have to suffer your presence here and your stale stories of long-ago-expired academic "achievements."

Once again, you run your mouth without having the first clue what you're talking about...

Of course I do. After all, I model myself after you.

you seem to want to convince us that you're knowledgeable about football, but every time you go off on a rant like this, you prove just how completely SUPERFICIAL that knowledge is...

I've known coma victims with more football prowess than you. Keep running your mouth, Cliff. You're an endless source of amusement and undeserved vanity.

It's an issue because Jerry operated like this in the past with horrid results. Doesn't automatically mean it won't work, but there's no need to saddle you're new HC with someone else's handpicked coordinator.

Seems like all of these other examples are teams choosing to retain a current assistant.

How many examples are there of a team hiring an assistant from another team before they hired their HC?

Jerry made Bill retain Zimmer, probably the most reviled coach at CZ. Now he wants to repeat the same mistake with the next coach. Keep sticking your hand on that hot stove.

Moore was the OC for Indy the year before (which was quite successfull) so its not an apt comparison to our situation. If they had hired another OC from a different team , then hired Dungy , it would be comparable.

But they didnt ,so its not.

Yeah but we aren't saddling a mule here were talking about the super-duper nfl up and coming Jason G. the coaches are raving on and on about. All I see getting in the way is an ego. What, the new HC is gonna hire someone else just because. Doesn't make sense.

Bill keeping Zimmer was his(Parcells) idea. He had full control over his staff.

Moore was an established OC with an established offense in place and pretty damn good personnell.

Garrett doesnt have his offense in place.

Please show me where a new head coach came in after a coordinator was hired who was DIFFERENT from the previous one.

Had the Colts replaced Moore with say Norv Turner after they fired Mora and then Dungy came in it would be a similar situation.

But its not.

Tired cheapshots aside, I love the team. Been doing so since '78. That's why Jerry has to go. No one who has the team's best interests at heart would trust Jerry with anything.

Jerry has to go??? Are you actually serious here???

Jerry is the best owner in the freaking NFL. Be glad that you dont have the Bidwells or the Rooneys for an owner. Everybody knows Cowher walked because they would not pony up the cash after a bowl run.

Jerry is spending millions of his own money, 2/3 of the new stadium will come from Jerry's pocket. That is about $750 mill by current estimates.

Jerry has won 3 championships since he bought the team in 89. From 1960 to 88, the Boyz won 2 championships. Do the math........

I think I will stick with Jerry, he gave Tuna $20 mill and was repayed with .500 ball. I would not have been as diplomatic as Jerry, I would have been freaking pissed and most of the coaching staff would not have been on the charter back from Seattle!!!

Absolutely, esp the good ones. It's not like Garrett was already on the staff. Jerry went out and got him with no consideration for the feelings or needs of the next coach. If the HC doesn't have the authority to pick his own players and coaches, then he has NO authority. He's a cipher. A sock puppet. An emasculated nobody. Players will walk all over him or defer to Jerry's guy (Garrett). WHO DOES BUSINESS THAT WAY? Jerry, that's who.

wow bbgun, you just contradicted yourself.

first you were asked if every hc hires their own staff, and you said "Absolutely"

then you admitted to saying the dolphins didnt do that.

:laugh2:
