Not really. SMU wouldn't get the top high school recruits no matter who was the coach. At least not on a substantial level.
Are we talking about now? How do you think SMU went from patsy in the AAC to ACC contenders and CFP team in such short time? You don't need a top 5 recruiting class anymore. You just need a solid class and the ability to pay for better talent. SMU is already doing this to great effect without Saban. You add him to the mix and everything gets exponentially better. The recruiting in High school and the portal gets better. The fan base gets even more energized welcoming a legendary coach so they raise even more money. SMU has deep pockets and a huge thirst for football. They are the future of the ACC.

They lost 2 of their final 3 games. One of them was to a 5-7 Kansas team. ...... yet you moan about Bama losing to Vandy which won a bowl game. lol
BYU is 11-2, losing those games by 8 points combined(1 to a CFP bye team) and won their bowl game by 22 over a top 25 team with two top 10 NFL draft picks.
Bama is 9-4, lost their bowl game by 6 to an unranked team.

The fact you thought to even try and use this example is a perfect demonstration of just how badly you need to touch grass outside the SEC.

Kansas QB is essentially same guy as Bama QB FWIW. When he is on, he can crush your soul. When he is not, he can lose the game by himself.

BYU will come in ranked between 10-12 when the season ends. Bama will struggle to stay top 20.--and that will still be over-ranking them. 3 losses to unranked teams and Tennessee which looked like a Jr High in the CFP.

No argument with 20/20 hindsight. But going forward, if a team finishes in the top 12 in the CFP final poll, they should go to the playoffs or what the heck is the point of the poll?

Bama did not adjust well to Kalen Beboer b/c Milroe can't run his his passing offense. They have the #2 class and are loaded with 4 and 5 star recruits. It will be interesting to see if Deboer can do better with a passing QB. Another 9-4 season and he'll be looking for a new job.

Thought experiment: Alabama vs Indiana on a neutral field. How many points you giving Indiana?
Well, Indiana beat Michigan.

And that was with Mason Graham, Makari Paige and Will Johnson.

Bama couldn't beat them today with their best 3 players not dressed and with Alex Orji playing qb basically the entire 2nd half.

End of the day if you were making the "SEC is head and shoulders above everyone else by a wide margin" argument 10, or even 5, years ago, I'd be right there with you. Until recently that was the truth and anyone who says otherwise isn't being honest.

NIL and the portal have reset the odds for everyone.

It's a new day in college football. The days of the SEC title game being the defacto national championship game are in the past

I posted that last week. So, this is garbage now.

SEC has 7 of the top 10 recruiting classes next year.......which is pretty normal. Nothing changes. Arch Manning era is about to begin. I expect Texas to win it all next year.

Why is it garbage now? Did something change since you posted it?

I'm sure they still recruit well. But like I said the portal and NIL have changed things. Whereas the 2 and 3 deep at a school like Bama used to be better than many teams starters, now a 4 or 5 star who isn't playing at Bama can hit the portal and go start immediately somewhere else without sitting a year. That's huge in leveling the playing field. And he can get paid with NIL too

Look, like I said, years ago when you were making this argument I backed you because you were 100% correct.

But in this era of college football it is different. The SEC does not run train on everyone anymore like they used to.

For Pete's sake, South Carolina just lost to frigging Illinois.

I'm not saying the SEC is garbage. They're just not light years ahead of everyone else like they used to be. That's all

Yes obviously. When I posted it, Michigan hadn't beaten Bama yet which is the basis of your arguement.

South Carolina played an equivalent team record wise without their best defensive player who opted out of the game. And let's be honest, South Carolina isn't exactly SEC royalty. They are normally a middle of the pack SEC team. With the additions of Texas and OU, they will be even further down the pecking order. They had a great season..... for that program. I doubt it continues.

The portal works both ways. So, the balance of college football has not shifted. It's still all the familiar faces. I expect Bama to return to prominence next year. They got destroyed by the portal last year when a bunch of Saban players bolted. Won't happen again.
