There's a degree of wisdom in that. You build your defense middle to outside and front to back...that's the Jimmy Johnson way. That said, the Cowboys really like what they already have. I know us fans might not agree, but there it is, just the same.

that said, i am sure rooting for taco and the recovery of dlaw and tapper, though i have my serious doubts

And rightfully so. I'm sure the Cowboys FO and coaches alike will be collectively holding their breath throughout training camp and that dastardly five game preseason stretch. But once you draft a guy, the cap dictates that you are kinda married to him for better or worse. It certainly isn't wise to mortgage your future through trading away valuable draft picks to land known commodities that might not pan out in a change of settings. At the end of the day, every single player comes with a degree of warts that you must contend with and still figure out a way to put them in position to be successful. I certainly understand the concerns on DLaw, Gregory and Tapper. But like I said, for better or worse, that's who we have and at this point, without trading future picks, we have to run with what we got.

Not me, we have some guys who I believe will step up on the D Line, we needed some CB's, there are a lot of great receivers in the NFC East.

well they could also have traded for a high-3 to draft willis etc.
they have plenty of picks and would only be losing very few critical players after 2017.
that would be dlaw, hitchens, butler, wilber, morris, bell, paea, cooper, mcfadden, looney, cleary
only 2 possible starters in dlaw and hitchens and draft priorities being RT and DE (if not met)
both dlaw and hitchens have plenty of replacements inhouse already.

absolutely fair point.
no one knew the 3rd db was going to be available at the 3rd round for them.
that is why i said i was willing to live with mcfadden and udfa.

so let me twist the question around.
would you be for trading Awuzie for Willis?
Awuzie all day... but then I would have taken him at 28

I'm sure we'll all be pleased with "Cheeto" Awuzie once we've seen him play. Word is out that he's the cat's meow -- he does it all, folks!

Awuzie was a high rated CB for them AND if you listen to McClay, they believe Tapper is as good as any 2nd round DE in this class. So its possible that Tapper is their Willis, Rivers.

That was a very telling statement by McClay. If you combine that with some of their other comments, I don't think they liked Basham, Rivers or Willis as options at pick 60.

Dallas wanted scheme fit for their pass rusher and Taco was one of the few they liked. I think everyone else liked the smaller OLB-type pass rushers more than the front office did. Willis, Rivers, Basham mentioned are all below 250 lbs. Taco is around 280.

I think they saw a clear tier drop-off from Taco to those guys. Gregory would show that they aren't opposed to a smaller guy with other elite characteristics. They must have judged Basham, Willis and Rivers to not have those elite characteristics.

This assumes another team was a willing trade partner. While watching the draft, a report was released that the Cowboys were shopping Scandrick. It may very well be that they were trying to do just that. Nothing materialized, which suggest the cost became to steep. That is a good sign. There was a time when Jerry would have likely taken what he could get and deal with the consequences later. The first ten years of this century were spent dealing with similar consequences from that approach. The fact that Scandrick is still here should tell you he has learned from those early blunders.

I think they believed that had a pretty good shot at getting a DE and CB with a 2nd round grade by taking Taco first. If they took a CB first, they probably would have gotten a CB with a 2nd round grade and a DE with a 3rd round grade.

we can agree or disagree on taco being spicy taco or soft taco.
however, i would have felt a lot better if we took another DE in the 2nd instead of the DB.
e.g. willis, rivers, basham were all available.

i know they were short on DBs.
but adding a DE with more speed and agility would sure be nice.
Soft tacos can also be spicy

or perhaps no one even wanted oscan, who was not playing that well in 2016.
value and patience are important to building the foundation.
to get the finishing piece, one may have to lose on the value calculation.

if tapper was cured of his back issue, i think this would be a less important issue.

People have been psyched out on the Taco pick. Two months ago everyone would've loved that pick. And people don't even know why they don't like it now. People thinks he looks slow and his tape doesn't wow you like a Myles Garret. But in reality, he was the best DE for this team where we were picking at. Not some undersized pass rushing linebacker who we hoped would be able to play in our scheme.
