Carroll played poorly in 2016 after the Eagles changed their defensive system so that it emphasized more man-to-man coverage.

He played much better in 2014 and 2015 while being used in a system that was much more zone oriented.

I'm guessing the Cowboys see 2014/2015 player in that they seemingly want to become more competent in zone coverage.

Good point. The last play in the G.B. game was a blown zone assignment.

It's not a good idea to cut him.

They can keep him at 1 year, 4M or cut him at a cost of 3M.

There are team options for years 2 and 3.
this is what people do not get about roster mgmt.
this isn't neighbor john who can be fired at his job with no further salary owed.

you keep carroll and he misses 2 games you get that cap adjustment back --1/8 of his base salary for 2017. so his mistake costs him money and gives you more cap space.
you cut him, the NFLPA sues you for his entire salary since he was "in the program" and under a treatment plan.

people act like this isn't real punishment.
the guy is going to lose 125K in salary plus any fines he may face and legal fees he's incurring.
he also falls behind in a battle to win a starting job.
if he doesn't win that job he likely ends up cut anyway within 24 months and that time he enters free agency with a previous suspension and more age.

He made a mistake, hopefully he learns from it, but he is not getting cut. He is still useful to this team.

On special teams?
He is worse than anyone we let walk.
We should be hounding Seattle right now about Sherman IMO

nothing you said is untrue but none of it follows logically either.

claiborne and carr each count 5m on the cap this year alone. carroll will count 2m on our cap.

carr and mo are gone so they can't compete for a job.
carroll has to beat out 1 of OScan, Awuzie or Anthony Brown.

richard sherman isn't coming here and never was. we don't have the money to pay him and we've altered our defensive schemes to be far more cb friendly.
we are a very young team that doesn't need to pay age and past success.
we need to keep the ol as in tact as possible and prepare to pay dak/zeke.

Carroll winning one of the outside CB slots is a bad sign.

Agreed.

But I never conceived of Carroll beating out either Scandrick nor Brown on the outside.

He'll be battling one of the "pups" for playing time as the 3rd CB.

Maybe I misread but I thought Scandrick was playing slot.

He has in the past... But he's also played on the outside.

I consider he and Brown to be the starters.

After that it is anyone's guess.

As of right now they have Carroll & Scandrick as the starters on the outside.

On May 31st with the youngsters they drafted, that's just about meaningless.

That being said if Carroll earns one of the starting spots then so be it.

He played horrid on the outside. I hope he isn't an outside CB week 1. Hopefully one of the rooks earns that spot in TC/preseason

Smart written all over this post.

I wish more people got it.

Please don't call it saving 1M in cap space.

Add the cap numbers for the next 5 years together and tell me how much that number changes without Carroll.

Keep in mind a vet making the veterans minimum to replace him will be about 800K.
Lol well, it would be but I wont say it for you. And I never said replace him with a vet. Like I said before, it's really not a issue if he stays or goes. Its not going to help or hurt the cap. Imo, I'd cut him. Again, my opinion on drunk drivers is different than others because of my situation. Jmo.
