I agree with OP. The plan so far has been to treat Dak like a Franchise QB, and build around his skill set. This has led to coaching changes and scheme changes, and personnel changes…all to make the most of his talents.
The question is relevant because the front office has to make a decision that will impact the team for years… extend Dak &double down on him as the Franchise QB, or start over. Once the choice is made, they will be stuck with it. It is a relevant and worthwhile discussion.
I saw one poster say the Cowboys were trying, as evidenced by the Lance trade. That wasn’t trying, that was a gift that fell into Jerry’s lap. He wasn’t trying to do anything when that call came in. He saw it as 1st/2nd round value in exchange for a late round pick. Low risk/high reward move.
The 49ers finding Purdy was a lightning strike of luck, not unlike finding Romo or Brady (extreme example). Luck can’t be the plan. That said, they were actively trying to find the next guy by bringing in several options & making a decision based on more than just pedigree or how he looked in the shower.
It is hard to do much more in the middle of the season, but “trying” would mean investing off-season (draft/FA) capital to improve the QB room. If Dak is not part of the future plan, then rip off the bandaid once playoffs are unlikely. Find out what we have on the roster now to help guide the off-season approach to addressing the problem.
