A Dak Extension Will Overtake Firing Jimmy Johnson As Jerry's Biggest Mistake

Jerry doesn’t want to let him go the same reason he held onto Zeke and Jaylon smith too long. He’s scared they will go somewhere else and make him look bad.

When in reality an extension would be the worse thing you can do.

You cannot resign this guy. You wanna give him next year to prove himself fine but anything less than an nfc title game this or next year snd goodbye
He doesn’t deserve another year. If it were up to me he wouldn’t get another week.

If Dak is given an extension you are guaranteeing failure.

I don't care if there is currently no plan in place for life after Dak. I don't care if the Lance trade really was just for a 3rd string QB.

The unknown right now is better than the known that Dak brings you.

You will NEVER find a high level QB if you strap yourself to low level QBs.

We've not ever looked for a legit QB since Romo got the job. That was almost 20 years ago!

The only thing worse than having Dak as the QB is that Jerry doesn't care that Dak is the QB.
Greater then Randy Moss . . 2016. . .Taco over Watt . . and the Roy Williams trade as well?

You may be right . . yet people discuss it here as the only viable option

Amazing

It will be the worst.

At least with Jimmy being fired they went on the win another, so there was hope that maybe this train can continue.

If you extend Dak there is no hope, none at all, and it only guarantees failure.

Complaining about Dak is EASY.

A plan for an upgrade is NOT EASY.

This isn't a useful thread. We know Dak's not elite.

Tell us how we land an elite QB. "Try" isn't a plan. We're trying. Trading for Trey Lance is "trying."

Be specific. What's the plan???
Awwwww. He is doing it again . . . same old tired Narrative in every thread

They are paying him a boat load of money when Cooper Rush could play just as bad for a hell of a lot cheaper than this knucklehead! And Purty makes what, $90,000.00 a year.
Not for long.

Their original plan wasn't working?

They literally went to the Super Bowl and multiple NFC Championship games with their original plan.
We're talking about finding an elite QB.

That "plan."

The 49ers "plan" for an elite QB was Jimmy G, then it was Trey Lance.

They lucked into an elite QB because their top 2 QBs got hurt last year.

I agree with OP. The plan so far has been to treat Dak like a Franchise QB, and build around his skill set. This has led to coaching changes and scheme changes, and personnel changes…all to make the most of his talents.
The question is relevant because the front office has to make a decision that will impact the team for years… extend Dak &double down on him as the Franchise QB, or start over. Once the choice is made, they will be stuck with it. It is a relevant and worthwhile discussion.
I saw one poster say the Cowboys were trying, as evidenced by the Lance trade. That wasn’t trying, that was a gift that fell into Jerry’s lap. He wasn’t trying to do anything when that call came in. He saw it as 1st/2nd round value in exchange for a late round pick. Low risk/high reward move.
The 49ers finding Purdy was a lightning strike of luck, not unlike finding Romo or Brady (extreme example). Luck can’t be the plan. That said, they were actively trying to find the next guy by bringing in several options & making a decision based on more than just pedigree or how he looked in the shower.
It is hard to do much more in the middle of the season, but “trying” would mean investing off-season (draft/FA) capital to improve the QB room. If Dak is not part of the future plan, then rip off the bandaid once playoffs are unlikely. Find out what we have on the roster now to help guide the off-season approach to addressing the problem.

How'd they get Jimmy G, Lance, and Purdy?

They traded for Jimmy G.
They traded up for Lance.
Purdy was luck.

They were TRYING.

That's the point. If you fail you fail, but at least you are trying.

Dak got humbled.

Why can't you?

I told you like 3 different times last night what they should do.

I'll tell you again: TRY. It's simple. You TRY to improve the position and not handcuff yourself to a bum.

Why does it seem we have people here that would've wanted to keep Alex Smith instead of trading up for Mahomes? Because Alex Smith was comfortable.
You know what slow people do, and no disrespect to slow people, but they tend to smile when they realize they made a really bad mistake.
Those Dak INT smiles are embarrassing even from my couch to me.
Having a really hard time with the understanding that Dak and his contract are like lead weights for this team for the foreseeable future.
Hard to have to digest that.

The plan guys.
Thety're the best.
Basically, they're just another mouth piece for Jerry's way of thinking.
There's one more just like him that should be joining this conversation soon.
It's like as an employer whose sales associate has reached his maximum selling potential on the job.
Should I keep him or dare risk getting an improvement over him?

It's called risk-reward analysis.

The scared bosses take the coward's way out and keep the guy at his status quo for fear of failure.
Forward thinking employers move on regardless of outcome.

It's obvious what our front office is.

And thus this team purgatory.

I cant even believe we even need to have a discussion on it. . . By the End of Philly week Dak should be firmly planted on the Bench

His performance is only gonna get worse

People are talking extensions because of an imaginary Salary Cap. . . Jerry is stubborn as all Hell but He is not stupid and neither is Big Mike

They had to let Dak fall on the sword. Now we can move on

Mountain does not have one. The reality you’re more likely to be Carolina, Washington, and Philadelphia then KC.

I frankly don’t see how he gets extended playing as he has. But Jerry is full of surprises.

The best option is moving on, drafting a QB early in the next draft (which is complete loaded), and seeing what Lance/the rookie have.

I asked for a SPECIFIC plan.

You can't offer one because you don't have one.

We traded for Trey Lance. That is "trying."

The 49ers totally lucked into a monster at QB. Their original "plan" wasn't working and then the football gods smiled upon them.
What's YOUR plan?
