The thing that kind of pisses me off about Peterson and the Vikings is that had this not happened last year, the Vikings probably try to force him to take a pay cut in order to stay, and he would have been released already. Right now they're just trying to save face and get some value for him. His cap hit is ridiculous, and is sinking that team and they know it.

I think you're right on here. At this time last year - before his off-field stuff, plenty were speculating about he and the team having to rework his outrageous contract anyway.

They know they're stuck and now need to get out from under this deal while trying to salvage something in the process.

Everything else is bluster. If they want to pay him $13 million? Have at it fellas! Nobody else is dumb enough to do that!

And have fun paying him even more when he's a year older next year too!

The original movie is still a classic.

This is where the whole issue resides. If nobody is willing to pay that much which is what would happen if somebody trades for him and the Vikings draft a replacement he'll be a cap casualty. He might be a Cowboy at a discount post June.

There is really very little dead money involved in cutting Peterson. The Vikings have until the beginning of the season to cut or trade him.

Steven Jackson? I don't think he gives Dallas a Superbowl. Good player, but the Cowboys weren't one player away from a Superbowl or multiple Superbowls at the time.

In 2007 if we had a legitimate running back like Jackson, I have no doubt that we win the super bowl, hell he might have been the difference in 2006 as well. I don't think we were as far out as you think in those years, but compare the difference in running back production between him and Julius Jones/Marion Barber/Felix Jones over the years. He would have made us super bowl contenders and I have no doubt about that.

We also wouldn't have had to draft another running back in the 1st and 3rd rounds as a result, which would have further helped this team.

It effectively would for me. Unless somehow the Cowboys didn't draft another running back at all. Then Peterson would be the only thing I could hope for.

Depending on how the draft falls, I could see us not drafting a RB. We have a stable of guys signed right now so that we don't have to reach for a guy and can just go BPA. We have such an awkward draft position that it can be easy to come away with what feels like very little. I don't know who I would be excited about. We have avoided draft RB in the 1st round before...

If that happens and I agree with you may very well happen then no way does this thread die until game one starts or he is traded to another team.

Nobody is going to sell me on what they currently have.

Some fans might buy that they can plug these guys in and get 'good enough' but I don't. And I also don't feel 'good enough' is good enough, especially when you're looking at a two-three year window with your quarterback.

It took them long enough to even realize how important and conducive the running game was to winning. Many if us have been screaming about it for years. Now that they finally have, I'd hate to see them get so arrogant about it that they think they can just line up anyone back there and have success.

There is uncertainty with all the guys we have, for sure, but there are uncertainties with Peterson too. The biggest difference is that we can financially walk away from any of the guys we currently have, but that would be very difficult to do if we trade and sign Peterson. If he gets released, and say that Hardy actually does get suspended for 10 games, then I could see grabbing Peterson for a 1 year deal to try to bridge us to some stability.

There are some around here that think Williams has a lot of potential.

But the amount of uncertainty is infinitely less with Peterson. The guy is a Hall of Fame talent who's biggest 'strike' is that he hasn't played since Week One of last year. The number of question marks around him as compared to what we currently have isn't close.

There are some around here that think Williams has a lot of potential.

Potential is fine for your #3, if you've actually got a #1. If this team had Peterson as the #1, I'd feel a lot better about Williams' potential as the #3 back. At this point? I'm not interested in hearing about potential.

;)

Unless, without the additional first round pick in 2005, Parcells overrules Jerry and drafts Spears at 11 overall.
