His current contract he is scheduled to make $45 million over the next 3 seasons. If he accepted $12 million a year like Lynch he would take home $36 million over the next 3 seasons. If he accepts $10 million a year then he would take home $30 million over the next 3 seasons. Accepting $9 million to $15 million less than he is currently scheduled to make is indeed an awful lot. So much so that is seems unreasonable. Dallas at most would probably offer $8 million a year and maybe not even that much, which would mean he would possibly take home $24 million over the next 3 seasons. That is just a lot of money to leave on the table for the best running back in the league.
I'm of the mindset that he's not getting that money from Minnesota regardless. My belief is that during the numerous conversations with Vikings management, they've already mentioned a paycut. He's already said 'No', while they're refusing to cut him. Hence, the impasse.
Lynch's deal may average $10.3 million, but it's a one year deal. He makes $12 million this year with $9 and $10 million non-guaranteed going forward. It's shaped to be a 'thanks for everything' one year deal with a $5 million raise to keep him from retiring.
I would give the same deal to Peterson in a heartbeat. In fact, it's very much in line with what I outlined for him. He gets more up front, and we 'eat' dead money on the tail end, just like the Seahawks will with Lynch. And if they go to another Super Bowl, it's worth every penny to them, as it should be to us.
