I am sure that as all fine and nice, but it ignoring certain realities, like the fact he is not going to come play for free and Dallas has less than $2M in cap space.

Which they can easily change with a few contract re-workings if they so choose.

Be honest, when is the last time you saw a player successfully orchestrate his own way to the team he wanted to go to via trade? Next to never.

He is trying to push whatever buttons he can to get out. The Vikings will determine where he goes. Peterson's personal sentiments are irrelevant.

The Vikings cannot determine anything without Peterson's consent, he must approve a re-negotiated contract with any team trying to trade for him. Therein lies the problem.

Peterson wants to go to Dallas, Vikings don't want to trade him to Dallas. Impasse.

Therefore we have this standoff until things get nasty.

If he makes it through draft weekend without being traded, I think there is a decent chance he ends up a Cowboy. Because if he gets cut it wont be till late in the off season. By that time Carr will be redone or cut. And perhaps Dez may have his long term deal by then. Then they can give Peterson the same type of contract Hardy got. I wouldn't think for a moment they would take him on a long term deal. AD could then shop himself to the highest bidder again. Revis has made this an art form. Maybe he has set a trend.

Imagine yes. How sweet that would be. But expect or anticipate something unreasonable no.

Let's remember this conversation a few weeks from now so that whichever of us is proven right can give a well-deserved but friendly "told ya so!" to the other, sound fair?

The average salary of the top 5 earners(not named Adrian Peterson) at the RB position is $9.15M this year. The average cap hit is $8.58M.

If Adrian Peterson is indisputably the best running back in the NFL he is going to want more than what these 5 other guys make especially since he was scheduled to make $12.75M and have a cap hit of $15.4M.

The average salary of the top 10 earners(not named Adrian Peterson) at the RB position is $7.28M this year. The average cap hit is $6.84M.

And all of the penny pinching and restraint they showed so far this offseason would have been for what, good show?

I firmly believe they are determined to leave Romo alone and not borrow from his contract.

Agreed. With a few minor quibbles.

After the Jenkins and Claiborne fiasco's, I'm not interested in CB in the first round. If there is a 1-tech that's good value, take him. Otherwise, go with a top of the line RB. Take a corner later. Maybe 2.

Crawford looks to be the guy who takes over for Melton. It's the 1 tech we need, with McClain/Hayden/Brent providing backup.

We also need a returner to replace Harris. Whether he's a WR or CB is irrelevant. I don't think theres one on the team now.

Need another LB, especially if McClain doesn't come back. Need another OT to eventually replace Free. If not this year, then soon.

Oh, and a ball hawk FS would be nice.

Lots of ways to go at the draft.

What I meant by someone to take over for Melton was a backup 3-tech and someone who can play alongside Crawford in the nickel. We need two starting caliber 3-techs.

Right.

Spending huge dollars on Peterson would go against everything management has been trying to accomplish on the financial side so far this year.

I think that is their preference but if an opportunity for a player like this were to present itself, just like Hardy, they will capitalize.

All of those 'pennies pinched' would be for naught if it costs you a true opportunity for a championship, whereas a cap hit of $26 million in dead money in 2017 would be well worth it while looking at trophy #6 in the case.

At least in my humble opinion!

Because the logic doesn't add up. Therefore the position fails.

Again, that makes no sense. If he wants money, he can stay in Minnesota and make more there than anywhere else. And his actions clearly indicate that is not what he values most.

And his prior actions and comments have indicated that his preference is to play in Texas and for the Cowboys, can anyone honestly dispute that?
.

When I think of Adrian Peterson I don't think of a logical person.

He can reject any trade by refusing to re-negotiate a contract that no one - including the Vikings - is willing to pay him.

Why would the Vikings be unwilling to pay him?

They've been paying him nearly as much for 2 seasons and aren't hurting for cap space.

They have $13M plus right now, more than enough to cover the hit.

As I've said all along, the Vikings are just doing a dog and pony show trying to make other teams believe they will keep him when in fact, they will probably have to release him and get nothing in return. No way he is staying in Minn. Their sponsors would throw another fit even worse than before. They can't trade him because no team is going to pickup his current salary-----would have to have AP renegotiate and he is not going to do that for Arizona, or whoever. Dallas has the inside track still-----they gotta stick to their guns.

AP and his agent don't want to play along with this farce and know they really are not serious. They are probably trying to convince him to renegotiate with a willing trade partner. He ain't gonna do it.

Excellent post. I love it when I see a poster here who really gets it. You my friend get it.

Unless Arizona ponies up a high draft pick at owners' meeting, MIN has no incentive to release AP before the draft. In which case, we have to pick a RB. Probably in round 2 or 3. Once that happens, we are not getting AP IMO.

I bet we'll get a story tomorrow saying that AP and the Vikes hugged it out. Seems like the relationship between Peterson and the Vikings' front office is so up and down. Either that or whoever reporting these stories has no idea what they're talking about.
