Nice to see Romo on there. At 97.3 QB rating Dak would be #2 all time if he continues his current pace.
all those guys won SB's except romo and rivers.
Dak could wind up like them.

Yep and all those guys had better teams and coaching than Rivers or Romo and so far Dak.

I dont judge players ONLY on SB's and team success.

The issue I take is with stating a likelihood as a though it is an undeniable fact. Yes Mahomes is better than Dak.. yes Mahomes may ALWAYS be better than Dak.. however Dak is closer to Mahomes now than he was two and three years ago.. How did that happen? Simple.. Dak got better. Mahomes didn't get worse.. Dak elevated HIS game and the possibility exists that he can continue to do so. Why admitting this bothers some fans is beyond me.

I agree you can still win with Dak which is why I don't really concern myself with these stupid rankings. He's already good enough to win it all without improving another inch. And 25 guys who are not as good as Mahomes (or Dak ) have already won Super Bowls.. the guy who just won the last one was not as good as Mahomes.. In fact the only QB in the last two decades to win a Super Bowl whom I would consider to be as good as Mahomes was Rodgers. The rest were just guys whose team got hot at the right time or they got hot at the right time themselves. So it seems to me people are focused on the wrong damn thing anyway..

The skill set alone makes it tough for Dak to ever be as good as Mahomes. That's an undeniable fact. He can do the things Dak does and then some. Even if you buy the premise that Dak has gotten better every year and last year he was on pace for his best, it still likely would have paled in comparison to Mahomes. Mahomes had 38 TDs and only 6 interceptions and a rating of 108. Dak was at 99 and on pace for around 36 TDs but double digit interceptions.

There is no shame in a Cowboys fan admitting that. Dak will never be as good as Mahomes. There's nothing wrong with saying that.

That's how statistics and "quarterback ratings" lie.
Dak has sucked at quarterback, but has a high rating because of the yards he's racked up in games where the Cowboys were already beat.
Yet Troy Aikman, one of the very best ever, isn't on that list.
Troy won 3 Super Bowls.
Dak can't beat an 8-7 team to get into the playoffs.

What's wrong with it is that it's an opinion. To which you are 100% entitled. But no matter how emphatically stated it will remain just that. An opinion. People can dig in on that opinion if it makes them feel good. Here is something that IS a fact. Dak Prescott led a team with similar talent to what Mahomes played alongside at Tech to much higher heights despite playing in a much tougher league against a generally higher level of competition. Now he didn't do it by putting up amazing passing statistics.. He did it by being a great all around player who also inspired his teammates. He has shown some of those same abilities in the pros but obviously in the pros the premium is on passing where Mahomes obviously came into the league light years ahead and frankly in landing with Andy Reid and not Jason Garrett should have INCREASED his lead. Yet by any objective measure Dak has closed the gap as a passer and overall player. Will he ever catch him? Who knows? But I do know that 4 years ago people falling all over themselves declaring that Jared Goff and Carson Wentz were "always going to be better than Dak" too.. Most of those people have had to go radio silent. Yes there are still a few hard core stragglers who insist on dying on that hill but most of them have just had to ****. I'm not prepared to declare that the "Mahomes will always be better" crowd can't end up the same way..

Sure it's an opinion but if you asked most people outside of the Dak crowd, the answer would be almost unanimous............. Mahomes is and will be the better QB.

The comparison to Wentz and Goff is crazy because those guys had like one or two good seasons. Mahomes has yet to have a bad season as a starter. Mahomes worst season as a starter was better than the best seasons either Goff or Wentz ever had (Mahomes worst season he had a rating of 105, Wentz's best was 102 and Goff's best was 101). Thinking (or more likely hoping) Mahomes could crater like Wentz is really wishful thinking.

For someone that says they don't really care about where Dak is ranked, you are sure spending a lot of time trying to convince people in this thread that Dak can be the best QB in the NFL.

The all time passing rating is increasingly useless when comparing past and present players. With all the rule changes the NFL has made in the last 40 years (starting in 1978) passer rating has climbed almost geometrically.
It is telling that Montana who played from 79-94, is still on the list. When he retired I think Staubach was #1. OR close to it. Now he barely makes the top 20 I bet.

https://www.profootballhof.com/all-time-passer-rating/

I found this. Roger is at #28 behind such all time greats as David Garrard and Marc Bulger.
The rule changes, along with the season length and structure - rules changes, more games, implementing a bye week, etc. - that have taken place over the last four decades - they have really rendered useless comparing great NFL QBs against other that have played in different decades and eras.

Well roy that is partly why I said dak could wind up like them, as his coaches are not much better than what the other 2 had.
I think dak has more off talent around him though.

No doubt, you need to look at time-adjusted QB ratings

Either use a formula to adjust for time or only compare players who have about the same median year of service.

One way to define these QB is do we think they’d have the same success if traded teams?

Would Dak be more successful on the Chiefs than on the Cowboys and would the team have had as much success? And we can ask the same question with Mahomes on the Cowboys.

Both QB’s basically walked into good situations with playoff caliber teams. It’s not like they went to the Jags or the Jets for example.

So, are the Chiefs with their sound organization, coaching staff and personnel a better situation than the Cowboys?

Ultimately I’d argue Mahomes is a bigger talent but the team and situation you go to does make difference. I think they both have benefitted from going to playoff caliber teams. But I think one is a much better situation than the other. And that helps.

Comparing Dak to Mahomes is pretty laughable really.
We can still make comparisons . It doesn’t mean the results will be favorable to Dak. I can’t imagine anyone arguing, but some Dakster Homers, that He is as big of talent as Mahomes.

The Cowboys offense since Dak became starter has had more talent on it then the Chiefs offense. The difference is the Chiefs have an all time talent at QB while the Cowboys have just a good QB.

Mahomes was so impressive that he took Alex Smiths job without Alex Smith even playing bad. Dak would have never seen the field if not an injury to Romo and Moore. Mahomes has always had it.

Outside of Kelce and Hill who on the Chiefs offense would you consider top level players?

The Cowboys have had Zeke, Dez, Cooper, Gallup, Martin, Smith, and Fredrick. I might even be missing a couple guys.

So, to answer your question, if we had Mahomes instead of Dak the past 5 years we'd have a ring or 2 easily by now and we'd be looked at the same way the Chiefs are looked at now. UNLESS Jerry found a way to screw it up, which is always a possibility.

Dak Prescott 97.3 2016-2020 dal

Dak and Romo so close?

Maybe it's the system they played in and not the QB?

You missed the difference on defense, coaching and organization. Teams aren’t built on offenses alone.

And I think Mahomes might have had a bit more success here than Dak. Championships with this defense and organization are doubtful though.

The bigger question might be would Dak have had more or less success with Chiefs?

Dak has played with one bad defense and it was only for 4 1/2 games (2020). Every other year starting with Daks rookie year in 2016 the Cowboys defense finished 5th, 13th, 6th, and 11th in points allowed.

I don't believe the Chiefs would have any rings with Dak.

Dak is just like Alex Smith, above average, but still getting replaced by Mahomes.

I did an analysis last year normalizing QB rating so that it is more comparable across years and eras. For the stats folks out here, I generated a z-score for each QB for each season and then produced an average z-score for their career. Here is the list...notably Dak drops to 35th all-time.

Code:
Rank Player Z Att FirstYear LastYear Seasons nQBRate
1 Patrick Mahomes 1.376303131 1064 2018 2019 2 109.4384793
