I don't know how many times this needs to be reported. Dez isn't going anywhere lol
We shall see.

They currently have 4.5 mill in cap for the top 51.

That is without Hurns and without the 7 mill or so for draft picks.

And we still need a starting guard and swing tackle.

Me thinks we need some money.

Still think were drafting Ridley. Im thinking its Williams who may be the goner now. Dez, Hurns, Ridley? With Beasely or Switzer , probably Switzer running the underneath stuff???? Mmmm,.... not bad really.
That'd be a pretty nice line up!

I wouldn’t say that just yet. I think we replaced Butler and Beasley with our 2 WR free agent pickups. If Ridley is still on the board at 19 then I think we take him and try to move Williams for a 2019 draft pick.

Williams only leaves in a trade, IMO. His salary for 2018 is guaranteed, and he's a 5 year starter, with better overall stats than Hurns. Nevertheless, their stats are similar.

Williams - 5 years, 80 games, 230 receptions, 3,359 yards, 20 TD's - averages per game - 2.9 rec, 42 yards, 14.6 ypc, 0.25 TD's
Hurns - 4 years, 52 games, 189 receptions, 2669 yards, 21 TD's - averages per game - 3.6 rec, 51 yard, 14.1 ypc, 0.4 TD's

But, Hurns has missed 12 games in 4 seasons, and Williams has never missed a game. Williams is also a much, much better downfield blocker, which is important in the Cowboys scheme. Don't let the fact that Hurns is a shiny new toy distract from how reliable Williams has been for the Cowboys.

Having said that, Hurns is more of a hands catcher than Williams. Adding both Thompson and Hurns may indicate that Sanjay Lal is having some influence on the team. It is possible that the Cowboys are going to revamp their pasing offense this year, and maybe Thompson and Hurns are better fits for what the Cowboys will try to do under the guidance of Lal.

I hope these signings remove the possibility of drafting a receiver in the 1st round, which would be an awful choice.

Switzer and Brown are living on borrowed time, IMO. Switzer disappointed last season as a returner, and Thompson replaces him. Hurns could push Williams out of a job. All three of the top Cowboys WR corps from the last few seasons are now candidates for draft day trades.
Williams would be on my chopping block long before either of them.

But we have that idiotic contract that Stephen Jones gave him that is in the way.

FRISCO, Texas – Two days after taking a free-agent visit to Dallas, wide receiver Allen Hurns has agreed to a two-year deal with the Cowboys.

Hurns, 26, was released by the Jaguars on Tuesday after starting 42 games in Jacksonville over the last four seasons, posting 2,669 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns in four seasons. Hurns reportedly drew interest from other teams, including the Jets, who were expected to visit with him this week.

This is a solid, smart deal. Nothing wrong with a middle of the road FA receiver at a good price. Time for Williams to it the road.

Williams is one of the worst receivers in the NFL. Hurns is a better receiver and its not even close.

Reliable? Better blocker? Yah, whatever. We need guys to catch passes and make plays. Williams that is not.

If you cut an injured player you have to pay out an injury settlement.

Yes, but you can always put that player on injured reserve. If there's no market for them in the trade, we have no reason to hold them out. We would just proceed through preseason as regular because there's always a chance that another player might get hurt and we have to keep the player we were trying to trade or that another player might end up having a need.

Until there's a market, you plan on taking all seven through camp.

Half the battle with players is ensuring their heads are screwed on straight.

Sounds like he fears letting down his mom. That is not a bad thing.

He certainly is not full of false bravado and should be grounded.

This is the kind of signing I think of when I say "mid-tier vet". Good quality player, good route runner. Contract is reasonable compared to some of the guys that got signed day one of FA.

Always thinking short term. Cutting Dez and using the money to sign guys like Lawrence, Martin, Hurns, ect....ect... make us a much better team. And the guys we can sign next year as well with the money as well.

Extra cap space isn't needed to re-sign Martin and Lawrence. They're already on the books at higher caps than a 1st year extension. Re-signing them would SAVE cap space, not cost more.

I'm mixed on the signing.

On the positive, they didn't break the bank, and I think it still leaves the door open for drafting a WR in the first 2 days. I do think its unlikely they draft a WR not named Ridley in the First Round, though. I would never say Hurns was the best free agent WR, but for the money guys like Robison & Watkins got? And only on the hook for 2 years? It seems worth seeing if Hurns can rebound. Let's also not forget, Blake Bortles? Not exactly the QB who puts his WRs in the best position to succeed.

That all said, I have my doubts Hurns can return his sophomore form, and wonder if he'll be a significant improvement over Williams. In my opinion, he was outplayed by 3 other WRs on Jax last year, and it would have been 4 if Robinson was healthy. Injuries played into it, but on the field he just didn't seem the same.

Right now, I'm cautiously hoping a change of scenery will help Hurns get back on track.

mr Willrise--- i see this signing and the deonte kid who by the way ran a 4.31 at combine as both adding weapons for Dak and as leverage for a Dez pay cut or even maybe trade?......also makes me wonder if getting a receiver 1st round is now not their focus?...this draft is rich in receivers...what are your thoughts with these new acquisitions and how it may play out with Dez?

Thompson is on a 1-year deal. Beasley has 1 year left on his contract. Williams has 1 year left of guaranteed money. Switzer and Brown are easily expendable 3rd day picks from a year ago, neither of which was impressive in their rookie seasons. Thompson immediately becomes a better return option than Switzer unless Switzer dramatically improves his game.

I don't think any of these acquisitions impact the choices the Cowboys will make in the draft. They have set themselves up to be good if they don't pick a WR. But if one is there that they like more than other players, they will take him. Also, I still believe that Dez is an upper level #1 WR in the NFL. The issue is that Dak hasn't learned how to use him properly. That is a growing pains issue with Dak. Having said that, if the Cowboys want to draft a new #1 receiver, then he will be used like Dez was in his 2010 rookie season - as a backup who is learning. The earliest Dez gets replaced is 2019, and hopefully his on-the-field chemistry with Dak will improve this year so that he stays a Cowboy for his entire career.

If for some reason we have no trade plans, I'm not opposed to a receiving corps of Bryant, Hurns, Williams, Beasley, Thompson and Switzer. There's not enough balls to go around, but there's some nice mixing and matching a smart team could do (which is the only hiccup in keeping all of them).

I think Brown is odd man out if we don't deal a receiver.
