To be honest I don't think Allen and Melton are any better than Hatcher and Ware. I guess we would be lucky to get them if they are cheaper but I don't expect any better results. It might be a long year again on D I'm afraid. Come on draft!!!

Allen is the same age as Ware, and personally I think at 31 is better. Ware for the past two seasons was very average at best. Melton is four years younger than Hatcher and many will argue a better fit to the defense. And not to mention the Cowboys would save a lot of money with these moves, not only for 2014, but for 2015, basically Ware and Hatcher would have bee cap-suicide, versus Melton, Allen e can still afford to sign perhaps another player with Orton's departure and Austin's June cut.

Expect JJ to go after both hard, get the D-Line in great shape before the draft (personally I could even roll with that for the season so the draft is just an added bonus/perk) conservatively draft big pieces of need, I would even be OK with an offensive player in round 1 after these signings, surely we can address the D-Line with a rookie in rounds 2-4, and maybe in June after teams have released another bunch of valuable players, then go after a Linebacker, or a Defensive end or a Safety. So far I really like this off-season, but we need Melton and Allen for it to be perfect.

Just my .02 cents.

While I don't totally agree with both Melton and Allen, it does make sense if they want to make once last stab with Romo at the helm. Otherwise I think Melton then draft the rest...maybe catch a few journeymen FA's if there are any left later on for cheap. If nothing else, it would surely get the fan-base excited.

Speak your mind

I was listening to Fisher on 105.3 and he was saying Dallas wants both. Fisher was talking about Dallas could get more money free'd up if they think its best for the Cowboys. It depends on Allen tho on if he's willing to deal with the team.

With two higher-profile free agents like Jared Allen, who was born in Dallas, and Henry Melton, also from Texas...

I would not put it past Jerry Jones to wait until we have them both signed, jersey numbers assigned/printed, to do a presser to announce them both.

Hold up the jersey with their name/number, talk about what an honor it is to play for their childhood favorite team, talk about winning a Super Bowl in Dallas, playing for Coach Marinelli, etc. etc.

The more likely scenario is that we sign neither, we wait until the 6th wave of free agency, and sign a couple of scrubs off other teams' practice squads during TC.

I always thought Ware and Allen had very similar careers. I consider them 1a and 1b the greatest pass rushers of this era. Their career numbers were almost identical. Allen is a year older, but Ware also started to break down a little faster, and the plus side is Allen played his whole career as a 4-3 DE. I find replacing Ware/Hatcher with Allen/Melton to be a pretty even trade off. Depending on health, you'd have to say Melton > Hatcher because he's 5 years younger.

It's always about the jerseys!

/sarcasm

Of course the Cowboys want and will get both.

I think Jerry signs both of these guys if he can. His credibility as a GM pretty much demands he fix the worst defense in team history.

I'd rather sign Melton and wait on Spencer. I do NOT want to restructure Carr or Witten.
