That is literally what happened with Romo. See, what you Dak lovers do is give Dak credit for every win. Even when the run game is dominant and the defense is doing their part it's still somehow all because of Dak even when he is barely surpassing 200 yards a game. Romo was clearly light years ahead of Dak (which he should've been. Prescott was a rookie, Romo was a seasoned veteran) and gave us the best chance to win. However, he also had a high cap hit and was near the end of his contract whereas Dak did not and was stuck with us for several years. That's why they kept Dak in. That's why they denied Romo's request for a fair and open competition for the starting QB spot.
Also, Cincinnati saved around $17m but cutting Dalton and Dalton requested to be released.
First off Romo was released after free agency started before camp even started in 2017. The cowboys designated him a post June 1st release for two reasons. First to give Romo enough time if other teams wanted to sign him before training camps opened and two, to split the cap hit over 2 seasons instead of just 1. Romo received offers from 2 teams but decided to retire and take the offer from CBS to go into the booth.
I don't know why I have to keep saying this but I think QB's get to much blame form teams losing and get to much credit for teams winning, it's a team game. Now as far as Romo who got injured in preseason and went on IR and had to wait until after week eight to come off but still wasn't ready to play yet. Romo wasn't ready until after week 11. With the time he missed during preseason and practice during the remainder of training camp and 11 weeks of the season it was almost like being off for a season and the possibility of rust was a real fear. Rather than risk that possible rust the Cowboys chose to not mess with the mojo of a 11 game winning streak and continued with Prescott. Romo said after taking the job from CBS that he's not young anymore and has had several injuries and it was time for him to retire.
Now lets move on to a couple more of your statements. Yes Elliott had a great rookie season but the truth is his production has been on a downward trend ever since his rookie season. Starting in his 2nd season and a 6 game suspension because he's immature and couldn't act like an adult in the off season after his rookie season. The third year his production was less than his rookie season and his 4th season, last year it was less than his 3rd year. Now I will admit that there were some reasons for the slide in production last season because of injuries to the offensive line but he also seemed to go down easier than in past years after he broke through the line.
Now how about Prescott had a #1 receiver that in his second from his last year with the Cowboys was one drop short of leading the league in drops and his last season did lead the league in drops. Then move on to last season where the Cowboys receiving corp as a whole led the league in drops, most of which happened on 3rd down plays.
Like I've said, it's a team game yet when it comes to Prescott haters they want to blame him for every loss but when the Cowboys win then they start with it's a team sport. Can't have it both ways.
