Anybody else hear Florio on The Fan say Gruden will be next HC?

Right, I think it was Dan Patrick who said Jerry was talking to him and maybe even said he'd be hired last year if we missed the playoffs... Though obviously that didn't happen.

Good thing about Gruden is that I think he has the stones to stand up to Jerry but probably also the charisma and personality to not ostracize and antagonize him. I've heard Ben Rogers say that Jerry doesn't have to be in total control of everything, he just doesn't want to be completely boxed out like Parcells did to him.

I mean, the guy had pretty great teams under Al Davis... No one else has been able to do that.

If ever there was a qualification for projecting success under Jerry, this would probably be it.

All he did in Tampa is win a SB with a bad QB.

Like I said, it was a very talented team that year. Look at the roster, and Brad Johnson wasn't terrible that year.

Jon Gruden is going to be Mike Shanahan 2.0.

Gruden was an offensive mind coach. The defense was already taken care of.

Yes, Gruden with the Raiders and Al Davis does sound just like Parcells in Dallas. Only a rather unique kind of coach can acquire enough power here to get the job done.

Gruden would mean less Jerry. That is always a good thing for the Cowboys.

That's what the next coaching hire needs to accomplish. Otherwise we're just spinning our wheels.

It was a great point by CL. He's worked with Al Davis when Al went senile. He knows what it's like to manage around a crazy owner. He's also not that old. He should have the fire in his belly to make a run at another title. Whereas a guy like Holmgren may not have that same kind of energy.

I've always considered Holmgren the more natural fit because of his ties with Jerry, but I'd have no problem at all with Gruden. At the very least he can make some killer mean faces to counter the Coughlin face when we play the Giants.

I don't think there is any coach that can come in and achieve instant results given the dilemma of having little to no cap room, aging players that have high contracts and can't be released (without massive cap hits) or traded & no players ready to take their place (Ware, Witten & Romo to be exact). So trying to patch up the damn with the minimal amount of resources (cap space, draft picks, existing players on the roster) strikes me as next to impossible in the next two years which just uses up more of whatever is left of the three players I mentioned careers.

It's not a very good situation for a coach to enter into, even if Jerry was willing to relinquish control and give him more than just the appearance of being in charge.

Bottom line is I don't think a savior exists for this organization and the next few years are likely to be even worse than the last couple of years, its just the brutal reality of having a top heavy roster with aging players that have huge contracts and having little to no cap flexibility. It appears management gambled with the guys they had and the clock is running out on them to strike gold. It could happen but the evidence strikes me as otherwise.

This team needs a very detail oriented coach, who is a jerk to his players, not their friend. Gruden is well known for running a play over and over in practice until is done exactly right. He is also known to be a jerk to his players. No more Mr. Nice Guy as our head coach. His process, watching game film and getting better in all 3 phases, offense, defense and special teams excuse will be fixed after a couple of weeks, not years.

Furthermore, Gruden realized he wasn't a personnel guru, and won't want total control of personnel. He will simply tell Ciskowski what he needs, and what type of player, and let him go get it for him. Gruden also won't be hamstrung by hamstrings.

Heard it yesterday and have not seen anything on here about it. He said if they don't make the playoffs then JG is out and Gruden is in.

Would not be my first choice, but a hell of an upgrade over Opie.

At least Gruden can look at our defense and ask "what the hell are they doing running the Tampa 2?"......................Opie looks at our defense and just starts clapping.

Gruden >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Opie

57-55 with the SB is something to get excited about?

Hell of alot better than 8-8 and watching the playoffs from the couch every year. I seriously cant believe some of you guys are actually debating this. Let me break this down in real simple terms so we can all pick which is better.

Option A.....500 season...500 season...500 season...AFC TITLE GAME....500 season....500 season.....SB WINNER.....500 season.....500 season.

Option B.....500 season.....500 season.....500 season.....500 season.....500 season....500 season....500 season....500 season.....500 season.

Lets see, which option looks better to me..................dam, this is a hard choice......................LOL

Exactly...The last COACH we had was Parcells. HE took us to the playoffs with Quincy Carter at QB. Enough said............

I wouldn't even consider a coach that didn't want personnel control, personally.

Unfortunately that's about the only coach Jerry will consider.

And I don't know, Reid gave up personnel control in KC and I think that is going to work out much better for him. His Philly drafts were generally terrible.

I don't see the point in recycling head coaches. Unless it's a tony dungy or Bill cowher type.

Jerry should recruit a top HC out of college that has never been in the NFL.

Kind of early to call it in KC, they have had quite a few good drafts before Reid got there, so obviously they don't need his help drafting well. Maybe that's the case in Dallas and we just don't have the coaches to make it cohesive on the field, but I don't see a ton of talent on this team.

I think we have had a lot of problems developing talent on this team. I mean Claiborne was a unanimous consensus star on draft day, and has been inconsistent at best. We have gotten extremely little contributions from 2nd day picks and UFAs since Parcells left. Guys like Carter clearly have talent, and clearly can't figure out what page they are on at times. And who knows WTH is going on with Dez.

The most successful player we have picked up in the past several years is Lee, and I don't think it is an accident that he was also the most polished and instinctual player we have picked in a while.

That's not to say we don't have huge holes (why is it so hard to get at least one semi-competent safety on this team?), but I honestly think a better organization would be doing better with what we have as Reid is doing in KC.

I thought it was strange that right after the MNF game Jerry and his minions all turned on Garrett.

you know Jerry and Gruden spoke in Chicago.

I even made a thread talking about how for the first time Mickey was going after Garrett like a rabid dog the next day...............LOL

Yea, Mickey Spags...........Mr. Sunshine.......Mr. company man.............Mr. "If he is so good, why is he available"............just tore into Garrett, especially for punting on the Bears side of the field..........said it was a give up play...........ouch!!!!

I still think Holmgren as the GM-type and Gruden as the coach would be where the team would succeed the most....I know, I know...JJ says at least 10 - 15 more years as GM....

but, mauve (can't call him Red, that's a strong color) is way too bland...Gruden couldn't do worse and I believe that he is already familiar with the defensive coaches and style....
