The personnel might be better but there's not going to be much, if any, of a material difference in the run defense this year.
I think that depends on how long it takes for Mazi and Overshown to grow into their respective jobs.

There is the San Francisco game. I would point to the second half where they had a 10 play, 91 yard, 6 minute TD drive and a 13 play, 64 yard 8 minute FG drive.

Here were SF's runs during those two drives: 7, 5, 8, 6, 2, 2, 2 (TD), 8, 0, 5, 2, 3, 8, 0. Not a great average but lots of grinding runs that just didn't let Dallas get off the field. If Dallas just could have stuffed one or two of those runs, they would have put SF in a bad down and distance situation. That is where Dallas has shined and forced turnovers and punts.

IMO, run defense was an issue last year and if there are stats that disagree with that (particularly highly massaged advanced stats), I would question the stats.

Some more typical stats: Dallas averaged 4.4 yards per rush given up last year. That would be 18th in the NFL. They gave up 2198 rushing yards. That would be 22nd. They gave up 119 rushing first downs. 19th in the NFL.

For a team frequently playing with a lead, those numbers are pretty bad.

With a full year of Hankins and Mazi, I think the team can significantly improve over those numbers. And no, I don't care if Mazi is a rookie. The non-Hankins DT's were getting blown back several yards on run plays to the point where the LB's were having to dodge blockers several yards down field. Its not a coincidence that LVE started playing much better when Hankins came over. All Mazi has to do is tie up two blockers at the line of scrimmage to represent a significant upgrade. Anything beyond that in tackles or sacks is just gravy.

Play action. A 7th round rookie QB took full advantage because the LBs have to sell out to stop the run. So instead they get burnt in the passing game. The rushing yards don’t tell the whole story. And the addition of Smith should help tremendously in this area.
Again, just like the run dee wasn't the reason for the loss,
the 214 passing yards by Purdy was not the reason either.

The offense failed the team.
The leader of the offense in particular.

IF both the HC/playcaller and QB can make proper playoff decisions in real time there will be post season success this year.
IF the HC/playcaller and QB can not accomplish this, results will be the same.
Regardless of who plays DT, lol.

Still only one play away no matter what anybody says.

Yea the offense was a problem but the D wasn’t getting off the field and we’re getting burnt on playaction. Doesn’t mean it went for big yards, but definitely key first downs where the LBs had to protect the LOS instead of dropping back and Purdy was able to take advantage of that. The LBs will be freed up with the addition of Smith and having Hankins back. It certainly wasn’t just an offensive problem. The middle of the D line had to get better.

Okay,
I'll stick with Micah's post game reflection on the game and summary.
No worries.

Think you need two studs on the DL interior, Mazi & Hankins and then our ends should be able to pin there ears back on passing downs and just maintain outside control on runs.
Remember the Minny Vikings D , which made Romo to run for his life in that playoff game , the Williams brothers in the middle and Jared Allen and co. Pinning thier ears back.

THE CATCH was only one play as well.

See how that works?
I certainly do. I've been watching since 1965. Just think if Clark doesn't come up with that it changes history. Just think if the battle of Midway goes the other way.

And I’ll stick with Micah’s excitement for the addition of Smith. Practically begging the front office for a 1 tech and they finally delivered. No worries at all.

The Ice Bowl. The announcer for that game called them Doomsday.
So you are wrong.
it doesn’t matter. The nickname was earned when they finally hoisted a trophy. Which was still 4 years from that point.

No worries at all when once again it won't be the defense's fault for losing.
I wont pretend to understand why you're ignoring last year's total offensive incompetence in the playoff loss other than being a Prescott family member but you can roll out Mazi, Vince Wilfork, Snacks Harrison, Siragusa and Adam's and any other 1 tech from past, present or future if the offense still can't score because of a poor decision making playoff choker QB. It wont matter what 1 tech you got on defense. Period.

BUT wait ...
IF the dee can pitch an absolute shutout and we get a kicker with a 60 yard leg you just maybe onto something.

The interior DL will be better than last year, but I would take any of the other NFC East DT pairs over ours at least right now. That may change depending on how fast Mazi develops.
