They had the best defense this year. I still believe they're not the best of all time.

After EVERY superbowl someone always starts a "best of all time" article...best game, best defense, best QB....blah, blah, blah

I'd rather rank our '71 team higher than them. In 13 games out of 17 we kept opponents under 300 yards 13 times. In our playoff/SB run we allowed a total of 18 points combined.

Part of the reason Is because the refs let Seattle play aggressive with their corners. That's the problem with today's rules and their subjectivity from day to day.

Plus, Seattle is dominant at home, but beatable away. Denver has shown to have very bad hiccups along the way.

Who said aggressive play was dead with the new rules? The Seahawks just play it the right way. The same could have been said about the Cowboys receivers. Teams used to always complain that Irvin and Co., but primarily Irvin, would commit offensive pass interference all day long. But Irvin did it in such a way that he could get away with it. It's called understanding the subtleties of the game. The good/great players know how to work the system to their advantage. The average players, well, they complain and use the rules as an excuse not to evolve their game.

Is this seattle D one of the best ever? If not which team had the best D.

The 74-75 Steelers are the best ever.I'm not knocking the 85 Bears, because they were great, but the one great passing team they faced that year, the Dolphins, hung 38 points on them.

What was the 91..92 dallas cowboys vs a very good buffalo team who went 4 xs in a row...how many trams have done that?

Our 92 team's defense was better than this Seahawks d. Our depth was amazing. The talent of the teams we played was superior as well. Expansion and the salary cap have diluted the talent in the NFL today. Our teams of the nineties were truly the last great teams the NFL will see.

I'm not impressed by Wilson. I think he took a little step back this year but has such a strong supporting cast it didn't matter.

You put him on the Cowboys and he'd be a train wreck.

I don't agree, he has "It" whatever that means, he makes the plays when they need them, like in 3rd down, he is not spectacular but he gets the job done, 52 TD's and 19 Int's in his first two seasons while winning the SB is not to bad.
Saying that I do agree that he wouldn't have that good of a record here in Dallas, not with this Defense and with this HC but he wouldn't be a train wreck, this kid looks like a winner.

I don't think he took a step back at all.

That was one Hell of a defense right there. You just could not stop that Defensive Line.

Having said that, I haven't seen a defense play that physically in a Superbowl since the 85 Bears. I was MIGHTY impressed and feel a sense of great satisfaction watching that defense play tonight. It was a joy to behold.

I don't recall exactly but did our 92 cowboys jump all over buffalo all game long?

The Ravens played ... Kerry Collins.
The Bears played ... see above.
The Buccaneers played ... Rich Gannon.

The Seahawks played ... Peyton Manning, quarterback extraordinaire and the architect behind the greatest offense ever. Plus, they're playing in a league that has hamstring defenses, unlike the previous great defenses.

This is solely my opinion, but I'm giving the nod to the Seahawks.

I agree. Their defensive game plan against one of the best QB's and the highest scoring offense of all times was one of the best performances I have seen.

Yeah, but if you really watched Denver all year, their OL was not great. In fact, it struggled a lot of the time. Manning and those big WRs were able to turn a lot of shorter routes into big gains all year long. That allowed Manning to get rid of the ball quickly and really masked a lot of the OL problems that Denver had IMO. Also masked Mannings inability to throw long accurately. With Seattle, that wasn't the case. They tackled and those big WRs could not shake the hard hitting Seattle Secondary. That put a lot of pressure on the Denver OL to show up and execute and they could not get it done. I think a lot of the story, perhaps as much as the underestimation of the Seattle Defense, was the over estimation of how good the Denver Offense was.

I hope no one has said it yet. The 1976 Steelers Defense is the best I ever saw. They only allowed 138 points all season (14 games). If you are holding opponents under 10 points per game that is just sick. They pitched 5 shutout. They held all but 4 opponents 17 points or less, counting the playoff. They lost those 4 games, 2 of them to Super Bowl Champion Oakland. Their only other loss the Steelers Offense only scored 6 points.
I was just going to post this.

In the last 9 games of the season, they allowed 6, 0, 0, 0, 3, 16, 3, 0, and 0 points. They allowed zero TD in 8 of the 9 games.

1976 Steelers ...

LC Greenwood LDE - ProBowl

Jack Lambert 1st team all pro & ProBowl
Jack Ham 1st team all pro & ProBowl

Mel Blount RCB - ProBowl
Glen Edwards FS - ProBowl
Mike Wagner SS - ProBowl
JT Thomas LCB - ProBowl

Their entire Secondary was in the probowl.

They played 14 games that season ...

5 of those games they pitched a shutout ...
NYG
San Diego
KC
TB Bucs
Oilers

6 more games they held each opponent under 18 points
CLE 14
MIN 17
CLE 18
CIN 6
MIA 3
HOU 16
CIN 3

The other 2 teams to beat them in the reg season were the Raiders in the opener who scored 31 ... and the Pats who scored 30 on them in week 3.

in the playoffs they crushed the colts 40-14 ... then lost to the raiders again in the AFC conf championship game ... 24-7.

Yep. Even offensively, they had some talent in Philly in those years. Randall Cunningham, Keith Byers, Cris Carter, Keith Jackson, just couldn't get it done.

I agree they play well, but we see a lot of subjectivity in the way rules are called. For example, the first play where Sherman tweaked his knee, both Seattle defenders came and hit Thomas early. If that was Brady for example and the Patriots, that would have been a call against the defensive backs :)

No. I think it has more to do with the Super Bowl. Officials don't like to call the game to tightly in the Super Bowl because they don't want to effect the game. If you notice, Denver was also running a lot of very obvious pick routes as well. Those were not called either. I think the officials looked at the game and said, Denver's WRs play a very physical style of game. Seattle's Defense plays a very physical style of game. Let em play.........
