Bledsoe vs Brunell, the debate continues

I think most Skins fans see that Brunell had a better year last year than Bledsoe and assume he's the better QB because of that. The "What have you done for me lately" routine. I personally think Bledsoe is top 5 in the league. Brunell is top half, if that. Bledsoe has the better arm and is tougher. Brunell has more mobility but even that isn't what it used to be. Right now Brunell is a servicable vet on the down slope of a pretty decent career where as Bledsoe is one of the toughest leaders in the NFL.

Brunell has the better oline, running game, and potentially better receivers.

Bledsoe is still the better overall QB, though.

That's because even with poor protection and average at best running game he's been able to string together many productive years.

After thinking about this some, if all other things are equal I have to grudgingly give the edge to Bledsoe based on his arm and durability.

But in the two games the teams face each other, I think the QB whos more mentally prepared and has the better game plan to exploit the defenses holes/weaknesses will triumph. Brunell and particularly Bledsoe both struggled against the other teams defense last year, the major difference was in the second game, Cooley was used to exploit the soft spots in the young Dallas defense...that will be more difficult this year with the additions of Ayodele and Carpenter.

I agree but Bledsoe has proven that he can win in the playoffs when given the opportunity. Even though Brady was the guy Bellichick chose to stick with, Bledsoe helped the Pats win in the post-season.

His won loss % in the playoffs for his entire career just doesn't wow me as top 5.

The same argument could be made against Peyton Manning and many would take Peyton over Bledsoe. In fact I can hardly think of five QBs I'd rather have on my team besides Bledsoe.

4. Carson Palmer (youth)
5. .....

And those young guys above have arguably more talent surrounding them than does Bledsoe. I'd argue that Bledoe given Indy's receiving corps would do better in the playoffs than Manning has up to this point in his career.

Yeah, I knew I was missing another guy, yeah Trent Green, I would put above Bledsoe.

And yeah, I am not sure why Bledsoe ranked around 11-15 is bad thing at all. Anything above that is little bit kidding ourselves on Bledsoe. He is above avg QB, so considering what we have had lately, he is an upgrade.

Look at it this way, every year somewhere between 3 and 9 QBs are in danger of losing their jobs the next season. Some due to age and ineffectiveness. Some due to injury. Some due to cap issues. Some due to a younger option ready to take over. Taking 2005 to 2006 as an example...

1. Detroit, 2005 Harrington, 2006 Kitna. Ineffectiveness.
2. Miami, 2005 Fiedler, 2006 Culpepper. Upgrade through trade.
3. Minnesota, 2005 Culpeper, 2006 Johnson. Injury. Will probably look to change again in 2007.
4. Oakland, 2005 Collins, 2006 Brooks. Price.
5. New Orleans, 2005 Brooks, 2006 Brees. Upgrade through Free Agency.
6. San Diego, 2005 Brees, 2006 Rivers. Rolling the dice on 2004 Draft Pick.
7. Tampa Bay, 2005 Griese, 2006 Simms. Rolling the dice on 2004 Draft pick.

At 11 to 15 he isn't in that mix unless he costs a huge amount against the cap. Not the case here.

Drew Bledsoe is a secure starter who can with enough talent around him take this team to the playoffs. Win a SuperBowl? I would be scared to death to see what a Pittsburgh or NE defense would do to Bledsoe.

Given Washington's scheme I would take Brunnel, given BP calling the shots I would take Bledsoe.
Still, overall if I was starting a team I would take Bledsoe, who still although pretty old seems like he could play another 3 years whereas Brunell cant IMO.

I would probably put Bledsoe in the 7-11 range, but there are a few young guns who will be better than him at the end of the year.
