Given the state of special teams, and that Carpenter is one of the more productive ST players, I doubt there is a thought of getting rid of him.

I do not think he played quite as badly as is being suggested. He was active. No question he must play with more ballast, but some of the fault lies with the front three. Blockers were getting to the ILBs far too easily.

Having said that, Carpenter needs to explode a fullback, now and then, and he did not get that done.

The jury is still out, I think. Carpenter showed some real athletic ability and enough presence to make 9 tackles. He still needs to show more toughness and to play lower. But the DL did him no favors. None at all.

This may sound stupid to you, but I don't think he has the feet to play the game. He's lacks balance, agility, is really stiff and upright and not a smooth runner.

He plays like he's wearing shoes 3 sizes too big for him....That's what I see. Roids can't help that....

I don't think it is so much that but his response time is getting him out of position to meet these plays head on. As a result, he has to use his speed to compensate for not being in the correct position. (diving)

He has clumsy feet! :)

Exactly. Like Buddy Ryan used to say, "If they don't bite when they're puppies, they aren't going to bite."

Bad analogy...Buddy Ryan is wrong.

Ugh... And this after complaining about how he hasn't been given a chance by the coaches.

I like that CL.....where's Michael Vick when you need him??

I have to agree with the consensus.....this guy in his 3rd year and he still looks like a rookie. Tom Landry used to say, paraphrasing here, if you can't show me progress after your 3rd year.....(Donald Trump voice) "You're fired".

I was very excited when we drafted him. I thought he had the PHYSICAL potential to be a player in the Takeo Spikes mold...same measurables. Well, after watching and waiting it is fairly and painfully obvious that the kid lacks the IMmeasurables. He looks tentative, he lacks aggression and just flat-out plays too NICE. He doesn't look like he's trying to blow anyone up out there. He pitty-pats and ticky-tacks.

That's not gonna get it done in the NFL.

I am really not one to bash players but last night after watching Bobby Carpenter it occurred to me that he lack physicality and the willingness to attack. Now if you couple all that with him looking like a lost toddler at the mall it is plain as day that Bobby poor Bobby is not an ILB.

He might develop into a decent OLB but he has no aggression, toughness, and he has no business mixing it up with the big boys in the middle. I was embarrassed for him. I know some will defend him but they will be on very shaky ground. Even if he didn’t know what he was doing he could have hit someone, anyone.

Watching him attack the line of scrimmage is like watching a rat pis on cotton, soft. If he wasn’t a first round draft pick, thanks Tuna he would have been cut.

Absolutely, sir.

While Bobby didn't look as lost as he did this time last year, he was not very quick to the ball. Hesitant perhaps. He might flow better outside in space, but in this 3-4, he reads way too much and doesn't react as immediately as he probably should. Note the second Hester touchdown run, for one.

Another thing, Bobby tends to get caught up in traffic a lot. Gets hung inside on off-tackle and plays going weak. Even playing uncovered, that can't be happening to your mike backers.

That is the magical phrase. For the people that is arguing about how the line didn't do him no favors, lol. In the 3-4 your inside guys got to be some mean SOBs. Line play didn't have anything to do with Bobby's weak wristed effort, but his heart on the other hand...

I understand your point and really am not trying to argue it. He does need to play much tougher. But a 3-4 defense does ask the DL to keep blockers off the backers, and that the backups did not do. The linemen did him no favors... he should have done more for himself. On that we agree.

You do know that in most cases the ILB are uncovered?

I am not ready to cut him yet but I am inching closer.

painfully agree. I give him 3 more preseason games to find out once and for all if he's a bust but he did not help his cause last night. Maybe he was doing well in training camp because it wasn't full contact.

I do also know that the nose man is trying to occupy two blockers. I do also know that the idea is to keep blockers off the ILBs so that they can make tackles. I do know, finally, that the condescending tone here can be rather disappointing.

maybe he should stop worrying about the RB and just flat out smack whichever lineman coming at him. He needs that kind of aggression. It was like he's thinking too much.

Not in the Phillips 3-4 theyre not. The dline was getting single blocked and blown off the line. If you don't think line play affects LBers then I dont know what to tell you.

Can't argue with you guys: just don't be so "I told you so-ish" about it! Hey, a majority of us were skeptical when this guy was picked by Tuna. Looking back, the fourth round would've been about right: that's a huge swing and miss, but in fairness all great NFL Gm's and personnel guys have picks like this: you are all right though: dump him for anything and move on.

We could have had Cromartie or Lawson.............Parcells is scum and Carp is a waste of space
