Bobby, Poor Bobby

It's kind of funny the different reports I'm seeing re Carpenter's play against the Chargers. Just copied a posting I saw on another Cowboy board which included Carpenter as having a great game. I saw much of the game on channelsurfing.com but also missed parts of it due so rains in the atmosphere which affected my server/modem.

he definitely wasnt as bad as some made him sound...a 3-4 LB doesnt make 9 tackles in basically a half a game by sucking...

I think he'll be fine...not sure what some people were expecting, everyone has noted he was having an excellent camp before last night too

Carpenter makes me loath Parcells even more....

We could have had Cromartie or Lawson.............Parcells is scum and Carp is a waste of space
I wanted Cromartie as well, but the player that I really wanted was Wimbley. Too bad the Browns took him before we had a chance. I remember some draft scouts having Carpenter as a second-third round talent and felt that Dallas reached when we took him where we did. In college, he was known as a player that lacked tons of physical talent but had a good motor and was always around the ball...maybe thats because they were running away from Hawk and Carpenter just happened to be in the path.

I'm not ready to give up yet though. He seemed to be improving in camp. Give him a few more preseason games to get back into the grove of things before writing him off completely.

He needs to play WLB in a 43 defense. Think Lance Briggs in Chicago.

He wasn't terrible last night because at least he was active and getting in on the action, but if he has to play he's a downgrade from Zach or Bradie.

Or play WILB in this scheme. He was playing the strongside and still did alright.

Love how some talk about how some scouts had Carpenter as a 2nd or 3rd rd pick. Well some scouts thought Ryan Leaf was going to be great and Peyton Manning was going to be a bust. The GREAT MAJORITY of scouts thought that carpenter was a first rd talent. It was considered a very safe pick and since AT THAT TIME we had no Idea THAT Ellis would do so well at OLB it was a logical pick. The most ready player to step in that we could get at that pick in the first rd. Sometimes it just does not work despite what the scouts say.

I think of a weakside lb in a 4-3 I think of ajhawk not bocarp. Bocarp is in the wrong sport he should try nascar. Ricky Bobby Carpenter racing!

I'm of the opinion that it's not the position Bobby plays, or the scheme, it's the fact his skills just haven't translated very well to this level. A guy drafted that high and rated that high by so many(including myself as i was a huge Carp man at the time on the Cowboys-Forum) should have advanced to the point of either a starter or a key backup ala KB. I mean good lord, this is his 3rd TC and he's still considered the 7th LB with only guys like Rogers and Walden behind him. He's got like 3 more weeks to get his **** together and earn some PT or his fate could be sealed as a Cowboy.

Given the state of special teams, and that Carpenter is one of the more productive ST players, I doubt there is a thought of getting rid of him.

I do not think he played quite as badly as is being suggested. He was active. No question he must play with more ballast, but some of the fault lies with the front three. Blockers were getting to the ILBs far too easily.

Having said that, Carpenter needs to explode a fullback, now and then, and he did not get that done.

The jury is still out, I think. Carpenter showed some real athletic ability and enough presence to make 9 tackles. He still needs to show more toughness and to play lower. But the DL did him no favors. None at all.

Yeah, I gotta go against the grain and say that I saw more good than bad from ole Bobby. I was at the game, and I actually watched him pretty close (and I had the benefit of sitting with an ex college-LB/football coach)... he got pushed too much by the FBs, but he didn't have the benefit of a first string DLine holding blockers off either, and 9 tackles isn't shabby even for a full game. He seemed to me to be everywhere, impacting most of the plays. As I understand it, the Mo isn't supposed to have to shed a ton of blockers... that is on Bowen, Hatcher, and Siavii as much as it is Carpenter. If you Tivoed it, you can see that our 2nd-string Dline wasn't all that hot yesterday. I also saw a couple of really nice plays that haven't gotten alot of pub--for example, it was him who flushed that QB over to Scandrick when Orlando rattled the QBs bones (don't remember which QB that was).
Anyway, I wouldn't call him the next coming of Dick Butkus, but I am actually pretty optimistic about his future. Now, whether he sees the field or is trade-bait I don't know, but I'd say his stock is on the uptick.

Carp and Burnett need to go.

Last night both of these guys were lost. They were either out of position, missing tackles, or getting drug down the field by no name scrubs.

Like the 1st poster stated, Burnett does show a little more aggression at this point, but his lack of either recognizing the play or his physical ability to get into the correct position marginalizes this aggression. Bobby on the other hand shows absolutely no balls at all.

If Carp wasnt a 1st rounder, I would have cut his arse in the locker room.

If I were Carpenter, I would get in Zach Thomas' jock and stay there. Now here's a guy that knows how to play ILB. The guy was in like 2 or 3 series, and made at least 2 or 3 plays BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. Not these meaningless tackles after the guy gets 4 yards, or in the end zone.

Zach may be the biggest off-season pick up IMO.

Let me add one more thing, I was watching Carpenter and what I noticed about him is his hips. They are extremely stiff.

He needs to consider taking up some ball room dancing, and see if he can get those hips more loose. It takes him too long to twist around after running one direction.

Didn't read past the 1st page of post so not sure if anyone mentioned this already. What bobby needs to do is just watch what Zach does and mimic the way he prepares himself.

If the backup DL doesn't play any better Carpenter and Burnett are going to keep looking bad. An ILB in the 3-4 has to be able to get free from blocks, but he also has to get some protection from the DL.

What happened to the Bobby from the Seattle playoff game? :(

He was playing OLB back then right?

Carpenter didn't play poorly. I'm not sure what some of you were watching or what you were expecting.

I Remember on the Draft Coverage on ESPN that year after we made the pick, Tom Jackson came on and said that Carp was one of the safest picks in the Entire draft, he really liked him and couldn't wait to see him under Parcells.:banghead:

Bobby was just pathetic on Saturday night. I was rooting for him to show up and show that he's been wronged for the last 3 years but he didn't do it Saturday. Maybe he will for the rest of the preseason but Saturday night was not a good night, at all, for him.

He's a finesse guy who would have been great in the old Miami 4-3 defense.

He can move and cover a lot of ground but he can't take on blocks at all. He;d be good with two monstrous DT's in front of him playing the run and allowing him to roam sideline to sideline.

I wish we could trade him for anything because he is a horrid fit here.

3rd year guy as a 3rd stringer... bust for sure.

Exactly. The idea that a different scheme would transform him is wishful thinking IMO. Wade's one-gap 34 isn't that different from a 43 anyway -- this isn't Parcells' scheme where he has to take on a guard every play. He should be relatively free to find the ball in this one at that position -- like Zach does -- but he is just so very soft. There's no way that second team TEs and FBs should be pushing him around like they do.
