Scheme fit should not be a tie breaker. That is how you get caught drafting lesser talents. I do not see how Horn fits better than Surtain all things considered. Not in the top ten. This is a game you can play in later rounds. This is exactly what we were discussing yesterday. I agree it has to be the coaches as they're looking for the best player to fit their proposed scheme.
so far the jury is still out on both players. hill has missed time and really has not proved himself yet and thornhill has been injured and been up and down in playing so far.Rod also wanted Hill over Thornburg.
The whole point of a tie breaker is that they are similar or very close in talent.Scheme fit should not be a tie breaker. That is how you get caught drafting lesser talents. So, you think that it's a better idea to let the guys who have been looking at the prospects for a couple of months have more sway than the group that have been looking at the guys, cultivating the relationships and gathering the information for years?
To me, let the coaches set the positional prototypes in terms of desired height/weight/speed/arm length/testing, and let the scouts go find those players.
If the scouts are A LOT higher on Surtain than Horn, then I go with the scouts. Boo hoo coaches, I got you a more talented guy and now you have to figure out how to use him, my heart bleeds.
But if the evaluations are close, well then who cares?
I gotta go with the coaches. I know, Rod wanted Taco......but you hire a new staff, let them have some ownership.
Actually we drafted for talent last season. Big Mike said we draft the player and make him fit the scheme
Marinelli had a few problems injecting his personal interest in player selection. For example Tristan Hill and Taco. So be careful what you wish for. Only Hill is still here. This is exactly what we were discussing yesterday. I agree it has to be the coaches as they're looking for the best player to fit their proposed scheme.
Wade Wilson was a coach when he fought for Dak......pull another one out of your......Then here we go again talking about another failed draft pick by the staff.
I worry less about the defense than most. Some new coaching from Quinn and fewer injuries on offense will help the defense look better easily. Stop panicking folks. The defense is going to win a few games this year. RELAX.I hope we'd do it again, I'd love a super talented draft class even close to last year. Of course, too much more offense drafted, and we'll have a defense that continues to be atrocious!
OK, this IS about scheme people. I don't care what you say, the DC better be banging on the table for his guy or he might as well be walking out the door. This is what PFF says about both of these Corners:
1. PATRICK SURTAIN II, ALABAMA
PFF BIG BOARD RANK: 13
Surtain was the highest-graded cornerback in college football this past season and has seen his PFF grade increase every single year since his freshman campaign. It's also not hard to project him to the NFL, as he has played 662 press coverage snaps over the past two years.
2. JAYCEE HORN, SOUTH CAROLINA
PFF BIG BOARD RANK: 18
This is the press-man cornerback you want in this draft class. He allowed only eight catches from 24 targets in the SEC last season. The issue was that even with the relatively lax college rules, Horn was still flagged five times. He’ll need to reel that in at the next level.
So, as I have been trying to explain, and mind you, this was the take before Horn showed he was the faster, quicker guy, the key thing here is Horn's ability to play Press. That's what CBs are asked to do in the Seattle scheme. This is what you are looking for from your Corner. This is why he is the better pick for us. It's really pretty simple IMO but whatever......
be smart here. if you go down a couple of picks and still get horn. do it.
Not gonna happen I'm guessing but I'm with you. I would love to pick up another pick and Horn. Ideal right?
Don't keep me in suspense!Wade Wilson was a coach when he fought for Dak......pull another one out of your......
