BTB: The Dallas Cowboys Would Be Fools to Release Romo

Again the odds of Romo being traded to a dumpster fire team are pretty small because those teams likely won't be in the market for a 38 year old QB with an injury history. So there's little chance there's a scenario where Jax or Cleveland or the 49ers are calling wanting to make a trade for Romo.
Yes.
The odds are near zero (never say never, I guess) of him going to a dumpster fire....unless he actually agrees to it. Not totally out of the question, but highly doubtful.
Otherwise, retire vs be in a wheelchair

That is what the Romantics are missing....JJones is negotiating a deal with DEN and Elway not Romo

Romo gets a chance to keep playing but DAL needs compensation for a top NFL starting QB

If he is such a question mark, why are a dozen teams lining up......answer= because they are 20-25 good QBs and Romo is one of them
If he he gets traded to a contender, then everyone is happy. The more we get, the better.
As ive said all along, it may not be much....or anything.
But one can hope.

I just think Jerry and Tony made a deal last year. He's played the good soldier. He knows he's better than Dak. He kept his mouth shut.

Tony isn't getting a chance to compete for the starting job, WHICH IS STUPID. He knows that, but he's quiet about it.

Jerry will do him this favor. And they'll still be besties forever.
I do think they may have some sort of gentlemans agreement.
Cant prove it, but wouldnt surprise me at all.

Jerry is on record as saying his biggest regret as owner was failing to put a team around Tony.
He (and FO) finally built a great oline and run game, and we see how massive that is.
Too late, but good for Dak at least.
Now...about that defense.

I agree with you on the gentleman's agreement. I think he will get a chance to compete for the starting QB job at training camp.

That would REALLY surprise me.
I dont think Garrett wants it, just for the headache potential.
And I really do think in a fair competition, Romo would win the job.
Not sure how long he'd keep it,health-wise. But I do think hes better a this early stage. Jmo

I think he would win it too but lose it again due to injury and then Romo will finally see the light and retire. I think Jerry wants Romo to get every chance he can fairly get to make his SB aspirations come true. If he goes down again injured trying to do so then that that's the way the cookie crumbles. Jerry's side of the gentleman's agreement will have been kept and Dak can then resume his role as the "Daddy". If Romo doesn't get into broadcasting, I can see Jerry keeping him around as a coach. Romo is smart as a whip at football.

It is absurdly stupid that the Cowboys aren't even letting Romo compete for the job.

Has he not done enough to deserve that?
Where I'll agree is it's a tough deal for Romo. His a great player and great guy. But Dak has pulled the sword from the stone. He's now King Dak.

If no good offers, I wouldn't release him either. Aside from possible disappointment from Romo and a relatively small additional cap hit, keeping him only has upside.

Besides, QBs begin dropping like flies during preseason practices/games as well as early in regular season. We may find a desperate suitor and be surprised what they're willing to give in return.

Not to mention the benefits that come with additional mentoring for Dak, possible competition and having the best backup in the league.

I never bought the notion of drama from competition, etc, they're all (or should be) men and professionals at this stage

It's a no win situation for Dallas now... If they play hard ball, they're heartless and if they cut him they're idiots for not getting anything of value for an asset.

IMO-- the best situation for Tony at 37 years old is for him to be the backup. I realize his pride and competitiveness won't let him do that-- but I would hate to see him go to another team only to get injured. The spirit is willing-- but the flesh is weak. His body has been sending him messages for 3 years now that it's time to wind down.

Would love for him to finish his days in Dallas and be the best backup in football for 3-5 more years.

If Romo can't play or can't stay healthy, wouldn't that be obvious soon enough?

If? What do you mean, "if"? We've already seen that he can't stay healthy for the last several years already. The "obvious soon enough" already happened, that's the point.

If Romo had shown Tom Brady's durability he would have started week 1 and never lost the job. But he's already proven repeatedly that he's not durable anymore.

I hope Cowboys can get something for Romo. If they can redo the contract to make it more attractive for another team to make a deal great. However I'm sure teams out there are also very aware of the situation with 2 back surgeries and will not be looking to give up a lot for a QB who comes with health questions. If in the end a deal can't be done I don't see where it makes any sense to keep a 3 year deal remaining on the books. As I have said before this is not a situation where Tony only has a year remaining he has 3 years left on the deal.

When Romo plays, he's playing chess when Dak is playing checkers. If Romo goes to Denver, they will destroy us with him this season.

They might but that will mean 2 things

1. We got their first Rd pick and got a future building block

2. We were good enough to get to the SB with Dak

I'll take that for losing Romo
What I can't stomach is releasing Romo for nothing

Well, get used to the latter.

We already play DEN once this year in the regular season....playing Romo twice and allowing DEN to keep their 1st round pick- maybe OJ Howard or Christian McCaffrey, would be a huge mistake
