Building through the draft

Here's my unintelligent view of the Cowboys.

The front office gets credit for recognizing one problem they had - the OL - and addressing it. Some may say they have invested too many resources in the OL at the expense of other needs, but I tend to think you can never invest too much into the OL (well to an extent, LOL).

However, I think they've struggled drafting and building the defense. They've had some big misses - Claiborne - and have taken on a few risks (Gregory) that haven't panned out and could potentially pan out (Smith). After being burned by high price free agents, they seem to have gone to the opposite extreme and just looked for bargain bin guys and the like to fill a defense full of holes. Sure, they've done some smart things recently. Signing Thornton and dumping Hayden was a great move. I loved the Tapper pick. I think putting Jones at FS is a smart move. But here we are, 2016 season upon us, and we still have a ton of questions on defense. Arguably the biggest problem this defense had has been getting to the QB. And yet people are surprised fans might question that our pass rush has gotten significantly better (and it needs to be significantly better IMO to be a real threat in this conference) because we added a 4th round DE (who I like mind you), a cast off from the Raiders with like 2 career sacks, a guy from our practice squad, a few other bodies and are hoping our pot smoking 2nd rounder from last year will suddenly find himself after 4 games?

The "reality" (or unintelligent and inability to see things point of view, I guess) is that this defense could very well be mediocre to poor next year and be the Achilles heel of this team.

So the best way to put it right now is that the team has done some great things in personnel moves, done some bad things in the personnel department and the end result is a team that could easily be 6-10 as much as it could be 11-5. That's where we are. If that hurts people's sensibilities, then by all means, just assume I am stupid and don't understand football.

So your predication is we could be good or bad?

Because I think the team is heading in the right direction I'm not thinking for myself?

Do you realize that sounds stupid?

Many of the supposed "super fans" while having optimism about our direction and having the best o line in football and what not also have the ability to be critical of the flaws they see within the team and organization. But there is a group on here that will paint you into an irrational corner if you express any optimism.

1. I said he'd be attacked for his post. Result he was--fact
2. I said realists are sensitive. You and one other seemed to get very upset.--opinion
3. I said realists would lash out--one was called "ignorant"--fact
4. I said it was easy to upset them--was that easy?---opinion

It all started because you started it.

Things went negative because you took them there.

Congratulations on your self-fulfilling prophecy. You must be so proud.

I do not think he honestly believes all of what he is shoveling.

I think he does consistently himself into thinking things are better than they are and then everyone around him nods in approval with the boss.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm saying. There's no bigger optimist around here than the owner. Oftentimes, to this team's detriment. His glass is always half full, even when there's a hole in the bottom.

'Since the Landry days?

Wut?...

I am not sure they are sensitive and easily upset.

I think the better term is amused...

As opposed to the 'check your brain at the door', 'just hand over your money to Jerry' crowd. You must be so proud...

When your defense has obvious, huge needs and you use your first two picks on a running back and a linebacker who won't play this year?

Sorry, I'm not seeing what you're seeing. But hope springs eternal I guess...'

This is so wrong, for at the beginning of the Exhibition Games there is no clue of indicators of just how the defensive side is actually responding, here.

The team has obviously taken the stance to build through the draft. It has upgraded the Scouting Department and targeted physically talented players for their selection process. Then, when a decision for roster space is involved, they use football intuition to determine who is kept. From five seasons ago, it has taken about five seasons to rebuild through the draft and address both the offensive and now defensive lines. Even if their is a personality problem with Gregory, the talent selected stands on it's own...but the player selections and then developments, are proving out

Just as with Landry, it takes a time to collect a stable base of players to meet the schemes selected. That doesn't instead discredit the scheme, It takes time to build, but this team....yea, on the defensive side...WILL SCRAP!

The focus now, should NEVER be at another fan, but against the Eagles, Gints, and Washington...

Sorry, but responses as these, remind this fan of self appointed Super Heroes...

Take the continual Jerry rants to the right part of this site...

It's nice to see the super heroes at work trying save the board from unscrupulous people who like the team and don't object to the history of Jerry...(not a single YOU)

True I do find that you will not go back and forth with a "realist" for more than a post or twi before the insults begin flying.

If the shoe fits pal. It's hilarious that the happy fans are the first to talk about how 'negative' any critics of this team are, when they're the first people to take a thread and turn it in that direction.

Just like you did here.

Your lack of self awareness is impressive.

I bet you are a Trump supporter.

Maybe the most laughable post of all time, somebody said the realists were sensative LOL. Nope not by a long shot. The blind homers on the other hand best not look in the mirror.

Funny thing here...is the attachment to the term, fan.

Really can't disagree with this on the FO and the moves.
But will say, at the time, Claiborne was considered one of the best players in that draft. I didn't like giving up a pick to trade up. So this is more of a hindsight thing with fans. So I guess it can go down as a mistake in hindsight. But many teams have these.

Also I disagree a bit about Mayowa. It does take most players 3 years, or sometimes just a change of teams before they take off and have a solid career. So I would like to see him in action before I say he is a 2 sack a year player. not that you said that, but you said 2 career sacks. But you don't seem to have a high opinion from that. So let's see him in action first.

It's not that I don't have a high opinion of him. It's that I am just looking at this realistically, he's a complete unknown and has shown little to warrant people thinking he's going to be a huge factor for us. I hope he's great and acknowledge he might end up being a real find for us because he does have some raw skills. But at this point, the only fair conclusion one can reach at this point IMO is that he's a complete unknown now.

They brought in Mayowa, Irving seems to be making huge strides, and they drafted DT, DE, and CB in the draft. What else do you want? Rounds 1-7 all on defense? Elliott was the must pick after Bosa went. Ramsey over Elliott makes no sense to me. Counting on McFadden to stay healthy again, and Morris to replicate form isnt a good policy. If we had signed Miller, then by all means, DEFENSE first 2nd third and 4th. Jaylon Smith is also a stud, and IF he plays again, which i think he will, we will have yet again the steal of the draft. Just like Collins last year.

Why are fans ignorant if they don't believe this team is as good as some of you think?

Because you can't see the changes taking place over the last few years that are setting the team up for consistent success.

Its your lucky day. I have a new policy. I no longer debate the delusional.

That is supposed to be a statement? Ha, there was never debate from your side to begin with...enjoy your miseries.
