Byron Jones: Are we concerned yet?

Jones' primary job on Sunday was to cover Larry Donnell. Larry Donnell had one catch for a TD but Hitch was covering him on that play. He made what should have been the game winning play by being tackled by Donnell in the end zone, but the ref didn't feel like calling it.

I was actually thinking about that on Sunday, how I had not seen him on any pass play for a good while and then thinking - that's a GOOD thing!

I think it's too early to be worried.

Last year he was shuffled back and forth, due to lack of depth and he was seen more as an athlete than a stud football player.

Let him gel/get comfortable in one spot.

The thing with Jones is two fold.

He's never been allowed to sit in one spot and learn it, so it is tough to judge him on that. Good or bad, he needs that shot.

I think we also might have a problem committing to him and one position mainly because I have a feeling they might want him to eventually be thinking about him as a cornerback in upcoming seasons.

Back to CB? Wouldn't surprise me. Just a lot of what they do nowadays is totally haphazard.

Excellent points. We really are/were hampered by the safety play last year.
You think they'll move on from Scandrick this offseason? I think he's an above average/good corner, certainly not a cornerstone guy, but with all the retooling needed on the defense, I think they'll keep him around a little longer. Carr and Claiborne are UFAs. Brown looks promising but way too early to count on him

He's 29, he's not cheap and I have my doubts about how well he will run this season coming off the injury.

Either way, Byron Jones at this point is the least of this team's problems.

Man I thought all the cliff divers were over at the mothership message board. Nope, I see there's a boat load here too.

Has Jones made any impact plays so far?

has any player on defense made an impact plays other than Lee, when he can stay on the field......and there lies the problem, Dallas has no players on defense that offensive coordinators have to worry or scheme against, which has been the problem in Dallas for years on defense...

I don't know. It seems everyone we draft on the defensive side of the ball is a bust.

You stick a DB on TE's when none of the other DB's can cover him and you're playing against Gronk and Reed.

As far as him moving around last year, I think that was on the coaching staff and the injuries we had and the awful play we had from our corners and safeties. We inserted him at the slot corner because of injuries. Moved him to FS because of injuries and Wilcox being abysmal.

And league-wide you see a ton of 3 safety looks on the field because of the use of large WR's and TE's.

I'd like to see better anticipation out of him, but I think he's already a solid player and perhaps that anticipation will come along once he starts playing the same position for a while instead of having to be moved around.

Also, this is a team that last season couldn't change up their coverages and that's why we couldn't get INT's. Wilcox can't play zone of any sort. He's Tony Dixon bad in zone coverage. Barry Church can't play man of any sort. Then you had press-man cover corners with a zone cover D-Coordinator. So they decided to play Cover-1 man most of last year and it was quite predictable. The QB and the rest of the offense knows where to go with the ball and it makes the DB's job extra difficult to get picks.

I don't think the problem is so much Byron Jones (at this point) as it is Carr (who the G-Men were pointing to Eli when they had him in coverage), Church and I'm thinking this will likely be Scandrick's last season as a Cowboy.

Lol this is such a depressing post to read. How the hell does this team replace all of those negatives in the secondary while also addressing the dline? It's going to take 3 years to rebuild this defense.

Carr seems like he's checked out a la Newman. Same body language, he was laughing/smiling after the Cruz TD. He never brought that competitive fire he had in KC.

I love how people get their panties in SUCH and bunch if people here call out players. If you are THAT much of a Cowboys fan that NO players play poorly in your eyes, god bless you.

I love the Cowboys and will cheer for them every week, but our relationship with these players are all temporary. Play well or get out.

Jones has done nadda and has survived on potential. He has decent games against TEs. First round picks should be making bigger impacts

I don't think anyone's getting their panties in a wad.

I think most people realize that this is a complaint about someone whose work is largely done off screen.

I think most people realize that he's done well in the opportunities that he's been given and he's been asked to work a variety of responsibilities.

Eventually it would be nice if he made the leap to being some ultra dynamic player like Ed Reed, but by all accounts the guy is playing very well.

But me thinks most don't know what that looks like from a safety if said safety doesn't have ints and bone crushing hits.

He's one game into his second season and is playing a new position. He gave up one reception on Sunday. Just because you don't hear his name, doesn't mean he's not doing his job.

Yes, call out players when they play poorly. But please know what you're talking about when you do. Strum and PFF both spoke highly of his play on Sunday.

True and I can understand that. We must also consider the fact that, aside from bone crunching hits and ints, jones evidently hasnt even made enough plays to beat JJ in the depth chart

Word. Its easy to get a higher rating when you dont even play all the snaps for the 20 minutes the defense it out there for

You don't know what you're talking about. Jones started and played 42 snaps. JJ didn't start and played 26 snaps.

I think he's a solid player, he's just not what we have been looking for for the past 20 years... a ball hawk.
