Byron Jones: Are we concerned yet?

He got smoked on the deep pass to OBJ. Looks bad playing in space. I've been saying it all offseason, FS isn't a good fit for him. He was at his best playing close to the line of scrimmage and covering tight ends last year. Unfortunately, he will rarely do this as the FS.

The fact that he comes out for Wilcox and is essentially in a rotation with him at safety? How about no interceptions in his career yet?

Are we looking at a possible bust here?

I did see him covering the slot a bit , I just need someone to reassure me because it is concerning.

I was concerned starting Thursday, April 30..2015:rolleyes:

Said he was a bust then.....He's done nothing but make me look good since:D

He's going to make plays and he's going to give up plays. He'll never be as good as we want, but he will never be as bad as we think. He might have a decent season but he may never live up to typical fan expectations.

Fans will judge him as fairly as they judged Newman, Ellis and all other 1st-round picks not named T. Smith, Frederick, and Martin.

I guess that because Carr got an interception and we can't bag on him, we have to find a new target. Byron Jones it is!

Oh Carr will get his regular treatment here at the Zone. Don't you worry.

There's just a WHOLE lot of it to go around at the moment.

Its a fair question to ask. In 16 games he hasnt flashed a whole lot of playmaking potential. You dont draft a DB in the first round solely to stick TE's. This could very well be a case of fans falling in love with his measurables and it never translates to on field production.

You stick a DB on TE's when none of the other DB's can cover him and you're playing against Gronk and Reed.

As far as him moving around last year, I think that was on the coaching staff and the injuries we had and the awful play we had from our corners and safeties. We inserted him at the slot corner because of injuries. Moved him to FS because of injuries and Wilcox being abysmal.

And league-wide you see a ton of 3 safety looks on the field because of the use of large WR's and TE's.

I'd like to see better anticipation out of him, but I think he's already a solid player and perhaps that anticipation will come along once he starts playing the same position for a while instead of having to be moved around.

Also, this is a team that last season couldn't change up their coverages and that's why we couldn't get INT's. Wilcox can't play zone of any sort. He's Tony Dixon bad in zone coverage. Barry Church can't play man of any sort. Then you had press-man cover corners with a zone cover D-Coordinator. So they decided to play Cover-1 man most of last year and it was quite predictable. The QB and the rest of the offense knows where to go with the ball and it makes the DB's job extra difficult to get picks.

I don't think the problem is so much Byron Jones (at this point) as it is Carr (who the G-Men were pointing to Eli when they had him in coverage), Church and I'm thinking this will likely be Scandrick's last season as a Cowboy.

It's been unreal since the game ended on Sunday.

It's like the fanbase has become a caricature of it's former self. And it was pretty ridiculous to start with, so that's saying a lot.

I understand the frustration, believe me. Last week was a continuation of a pathetic losing streak. I'm as pissed and frustrated as I think I've ever been as a Cowboys fan. But holy smokes, at some point common sense has to at least make a guest appearance.

This website only represents a small percentage of the fan population. Wouldn't put too much stock into it.

I feel like I'm on Reddit sometimes with the constant circle jerks and memes

He is ROTATING with Wilcox.

Our first round pick rotates and makes 1 tackle in a game.

Not being ridiculous here...I am concerned.

The guy is a test athlete trying to learn football. Does he even have the instincts? I havent seen the evidence of that yet.

Not concerned, but definitely want to see more as the season progresses. He does seem late a lot on deep passes(this game and some last year). Scandrick looked like he should have had help on that long completion to Beckham, but Jones was late getting over.

Will be watching that this weekend. One thing for sure he's a lot closer, even out of position than Wilcox or Church

Claiborne looked a lot better in his coverage. Tight to the receiver. The one thing I still see us doing is not looking back for the ball. I call this the " Dave Campo, chase the dog coverage" Seems like we haven't changed at all in that regard.

Its 1 game. Its not time to worry about pro bowler bryant, its not time to worry about rookies elliott or prescott, its not time to worry about inability to convert in the red zone, and its not time to worry about Jones in his first game since being committed to FS.

The question I would have is does he rotate because he's just not playing well enough to stay out there the entire time or is he rotating because Marinelli has some perverse belief that Wilcox is actually a competent safety?

I tend to think it's the latter. Wilcox may end up being the Nick Hayden of the secondary.
