I haven't given up on BJ altogether but it seems he should be doing better by now. With all the talent that he has at his disposal, he needs to be more aggressive to get the most out of his natural ability. I'm not at all sure he has it in his nature. Being average just isn't enough for someone so blessed with his level of athletic ability. It seems to me like the defensive staff might do well to light a fire under his tail to get him motivated.

What a dumb standard......'who did they beat out?'....... on the one hand a late 1st is supposed to be an automatic HOFer in your curved scale but on the other hand they are supposed to have to beat out other HOFers on the team already

Give us a break...... an instant 4 year starter at 27 in the draft is a huge win......every year, every position

Maybe to a low standard cheerleader like you.

Next thing your going to tell me is that some scrub like Heath EARNED his starter position. :lmao:

I defended B. Jones all the way through to the Broncos game when I saw him pulling up on some tackles. Ive got no use for a safety making business decisions.

I think he’s been miscast as a safety when he struggles with anticipation while out in space.

I think he still has use lining up against a WR/TE/RB in man coverage.

He may be a solid player, but he need to learn how to wrap up on his tackles.....some of the time I see him just throwing his body at the runner and bouncing off. Someone mentioned Woodson, what made him great and a potential HOFer was his tackling, as well as football knowledge.

Huh?

He's playing better than Collins is this season.

YR

We are gonna have to disagree.
  • Pff has Collins at 84.5 and jones at 75.4
  • Jones has 30 tackles 0 ints 0 forced fumbles Collins has 42 tackles 1 int 1 forced fumble
  • Collins also lines up at 4 different positions
  • Collins coverage skills has been outstanding at 86.6 last week even. Crazy stuff

Byron Jones seems to be regressing as a Safety.
He is taking bad angles too many times.
I noticed a couple of times yesterday where he made horrible plays on the ball. I think there was one egregious instance yesterday where the WR caught the ball across the middle and Jones was clueless of location of the ball and ran toward Garcon who was no where near the play and the 49er receiver had an open field after the catch.
Jones does make some good plays but he isn't nearly as consistent as is expected.

There actually is data supporting the idea of 'beginner's luck' when novices perform better than those with intermediate skill. In medicine the effect is known as the 'intermediate effect' https://www.researchgate.net/publication/228872328_Thinking_and_reasoning_in_medicine/figures?lo=1

But another way to think about it is that most people agree that playing with 'confidence' is essential in football, and when you don't know anything ones confidence is actually at its highest. It can make up for a lot of things on the field. As he learns more he starts to see all that he doesn't know and his confidence drops until his knowledge and ability starts to come together (i.e., expert). This is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. https://imgur.com/r/psychology/jbo2gy5

This is a lot of words to say that his 'regression' is a sign that he is learning, and it is something that all players go through and most see it affect their play. This will be true until he can go out there and just play without thinking.

Look at this data. Sparq warrior isn't so special this year.

:dance::dance::dance:

This could mean that the DL and LBers are tackling players before the safeties have to. So these numbers in themselves don't mean anything. It may be true that the safeties are tackling less well this year, but this data can't show that.

Safety is all instinct, reckless abandon, ball skills, and a mean streak. Jones has NONE of that. Put him at corner and allow him to focus just on coverage of one receiver. He may do better.
