Hitchens took a lot of heat too when he was picked. And there were people who thought McClain was a wasted signing (granted, he might still end up being that).

How bad did he look last night? I tuned in and out so I saw the 3 straight plays he shut down before the TD. The TD looked to be good coverage. He just seemed to be focused more on playing the man tight and not watching the ball....correctable mistake that should come with time and confidence.

Did he get beat a lot last night?

Man, you would figure this fan base would learn to give some time to these things. Remember these beauties.

Frederick & Twill trade down was the worst.
Dez was a thug and we should cut him.
All the Romo hate threads
Poor Garrett (admittedly, present company included in this one)

Merriman > Ware

That one legit pissed me off.

Man I remember those days on the Cowboys Scout.com site. Man, people were downright pissed that we took Ware over Merriman. LOL.

No, I believe it was just that TD and one previous catch. The guys who didn't like the pick or are not Cowboys fans are just using it to vent I guess.

Last I heard, Vikings CB Trae Waynes, who was picked way before Byron Jones and I think was the top CB taken, isn't going to start. He has been struggling from what I saw early of him and have heard recently.

How about comparing Jones to some of the other rookie CBs drafted by other teams? Better comparison in my opinion.

Hated this pick from day one.

Way too many players are passed over because of how fast they can run....how high they can jump...etc...

You won't say that when he's your starter for next 7 years. He's been in the NFL, what, a month? C'mon guys, How many rookie DBS come in and dominate the league? Especially those taken in almost the second round.

I did this about a week ago. Just quickly perused some articles to see where other DBs were.

1) Waynes - could start for Minnesota, but has struggled in camp (but as of today apparently he won't get a starting gig).
2) Johnson - played fairly well thus far
3) Peters - Apparently very impressive in Chiefs camp
4) Jones
5) Randall - made shift to CB and has looked OK thus far
6) Collins - hurt
7) J. Collins - appears to be struggling in camp
8) Tartt - won't start but has been decent in camp
9) Rowe - started strong in practices but taper off but won't start and not in nickle package either
10) Darby - struggling mightily
11) Golson - hurt, I believe
12) Rollins - struggling
13) Richards - been OK

I would point out Kevin Smith (1,17) and Darren Woodson (2,37). Both were taken in 1992, Smith didn't start until game 11 and Woodson didn't start at all as a rookie.

He needs some time.

Still you have to wonder where he can provide more value -- at the 5th CB or possibly as the starting FS.

I think he might be better off moving forward (as a FS) playing the ball rather than trying to cover as a corner. That is until he feels more comfortable with his CB technique.

Disclaimer: I watched the game off and on, haven't rewatched it, and I wasn't necessarily focused in solely on him.

I don't know if it was just me, but I felt like he looked, well, crappy and lost out there.

I know he's a rookie, and -as I am typically an optimist- I think he'll learn from his mistakes. I do think the proverbial brakes need to be pumped on him a bit though.

From what I saw of him tonight in his extended playtime, he's not close to being ready to be a starter.

A lot of this could have to do with the fact that most of the guys surrounding him are going to be cut this week, so maybe he just looked bad because of the lack of talent around him. He was playing mostly safety, so maybe he was cleaning up other guys' mistakes. I don't know.

I do know that he is very intelligent and athletic, so I trust he'll learn from his mistakes, and have the ability to correct them.

What did you guys think of him tonight?

I think he did some good and bad. He will become more consistent as he continues to develop.

Jones was a mixed bag in the Texans games, some very good plays, then the TD mistake.

This is what rookies do, they are inconsistent and you have to remember he missed some time with his shoulder injury.

Further, the shoulder injury from college also hurt his development as a player, he needs seasoning through experience.

Jones has all the ability and tools, he just needs experience by playing the position.

He will be fine and as others have noted he is not starting for a reason, if we have an injury or poor play elsewhere he will be thrown in the fire.

Jones is going to play regardless and the more experience he gets the better he will be in my book.

The kid has ability and intelligence, including the work ethic to get better.

Nice post
It amazes me how many fans think they are smarter than the staff and they have determined without ever watching a practice and just seeing a few plays in pre season that a guy can't play
Let's see about half our draft picks have been busts initially according to fans
Fred was taken to high
Twill is a body catching bust
Hitch is a bust
And the list goes on

Called this months before the draft....From every highlight video of him in college he looked lost. And now people are surprised he can't locate the football.....another Cowboyzone shocker  that 90% bought the hype coming from the combine....

Still ticked we passed on Malcolm Brown for this guy

Malcolm Brown has looked like hot garbage.

Pack up your things, folks. We can't have opinions, can't discuss what we believe to bad/good picks. We're not the staff, must assume every pick is a good pick.

And I like on your list you leave off the Claiborne pick. Which is probably the most appropriate comparison.
